It is interesting that this is one of the only times you do get to really shape your faction in 4, like sure the game does sells the idea you can guide the Institute to be more ethical and all but i can't think of another time for any of the 4 factions that you can actually do something to shape their politics.

The House Divided quest after your appointment as the next Director lets you decide the fate of 2 fairly important Institute members and show the people of the Institute how you rule.

Another fine piece of work Ox as usual and superior deductions on the roles and leadership abilities in the institute. As a retired U.S. Army leader I learned early on in my 24 years of service that one has to be able to rather quickly figure out the roles and strong suits of the personnel working with me and task them as best I can in the things they excel in! Not always an easy job but they are all part of the team and therefore part of the success!! HOOAAH!! Great job OX!!

A Synth can, IIRC, do all those things yet because they are manufactured they aren't considered sentient/people. Reminds me of the Quarians and Geth from ME

I suspect the developers were likely thinking of such ideas originally, but then they realized that the budget Zenimax higher-ups had given them wouldn't allow them to do such things later in development, so they ended up cutting out a lot of shit.

Also Ox, a small detail about the institute, if you zoom in onto the security cameras, it actually says Leica Summilux on it which is a real world lense. They just plopped a real world camera lens model in there

I would personally hypothesize that another main reason going on the sentiment aspect of Seans decision; is he knew his subordinates aka the heads of departments would probably never accept Nate(Seans father) after Seans passing and may very likely turn hostile and label him a plant from aboveground into the wearabouts of the Institute. Also explains his quick rebuke of all the Heads of departments when expressing their concerns with Seans presence given the sensitive subject matter at hand. But now they know being intellectuals as well as lifelong Institute conditioning. Fully accepting the colony life mindset: always putting the interest of the whole before oneself. Definitely shows shades of and gives those NK vibes operating under a Supreme Authority/ Supreme Leader government. And always goes further into a cult of personality almost Royalty in this instance. Lifelong work and Success and absolute seflessness in the interests of the organization. The Institute giving a aura of supreme responsibility; the village elder. Seeing themselves underground as true humans as opposed to the "corrupted" and barbaric humans running wild and feral. Also subscribing themselves to the only destiny as humanities only path and vision forward into the future. Forever in thier minds ensuring what they endured via absolute nuclear annihilation. Ruling the world, consolidating the power to one "all knowing" body aka The Institute. White Kim Jong Il has passed the Torch to Kim Jong un but just in the fallout universe

Yeah you can, actually in my first run, I sided with the institute and isolated it. Made them announce their retirement from surface and so by cleaning rr and bos. Only minutemen stay unless you rule nuka world and bring the raiders with you, which I did not by fighting all of them and liberate the slaves.

I might be mustake, but the voice of Alan is voiced by the doctor of Star Trek Voyager. Which would make the synth he has in his room with no right a bit of an ironic Easter egg. As his role in Voyager, he had no rights as a hologram.

I can only imagine what it would take to locate Liam Binet. Wandering around aimlessly searching every name tag, takes too long. Console commands could summon Liam to your location, but that depends on IF there is a Liam still in existence, somewhere around in the commonwealth. Worth the effort? The Railroad is the only people that Liam would trust on the surface and would most likely, search for them. I Hope the Railroad smuggled him out of the Commonwealth. lol

He would have to find the RR and know of their existence before he could even search. Given that while he's inside the Institute he has no idea of the ultimate fate of the synths he helps, I doubt he knows the RR even exist when he's banished. Unless one of those tapes about the RR in the trashcans was found by him, but I dont think any of those 4 tapes were found in the robotics division trashcans

The first and only time I ever did this mission, I did it after finishing the main storyline. At that time, I had just started taking X6-88 as a companion, and I wanted to maximize his affinity. I also at the time felt that what Liam was doing was dangerous and harmful to both the Institute and the Commonwealth as a whole. As much as the Railroad are good intentioned, Shaun was right when he said that them "freeing" synths put lives at risk. Rogue synths are a danger, and they are also in danger. The surface is not synth-friendly, aside, perhaps, for Acadia and some places under Railroad control. As such, I decided at the time to bust Liam on it. In the process, I also had to waste Eve. I actually regret doing that, though. I put it right on up there with having to take out the Railroad, especially Deacon, in terms of things that I look at as unfortunate things done for the Institute's benefit. Liam is just a kid. That makes it worse. If I were to do this mission over, today, I would save Liam and Eve, and give Justin Ayo the boot. He's not a good person. He's hated by everyone in the Institute for good reason. He is probably a major contributing factor to people hating the Institute because of his tactics. I would, at a minimum, demote him, if not outright banish him if I actually were given that authority. Liam, by contrast, is a good, kind hearted human being. So is Eve. To catch Liam is to destroy Alan Binet's life. Alan, too, is a good man- if a bit rude at times. He is kind, he cares about people, and he works hard. His contributions to the Institute are enormous, and moreover putting him into a state of such sheer grief probably hurts his productivity. This is why, in my headcanon, while I don't retcon my choice then, I do say that my character comes to regret it, and eventually chooses to fire Justin Ayo, and also to bring Liam back into the Institute. It is likely that Liam is with the remnants of the Railroad now, if he wasn't scooped up by the Brotherhood. He may be in Diamond City if not. I know we never run into him in game, but those seem the most likely possibilities, if he's still alive. I think of the options, the Railroad is most likely. He has indirect connections with them, and they probably would find out about him pretty quick. A guy dressed in Institute garb just appears outside CIT and starts walking around, looking lost and sad? Yeah, the Railroad is going to think he's either a rogue scientist or an escaped synth, and in either case, they want him. I'm not sure how exactly I plan to say he gets back to the Institute, but I do know I want father and son reunited. I think they both deserve that. I just wish I hadn't had to take out Eve.

seems they have enough resources to make as many synths as they may ever need or want. With that in mind wouldnt it be ethical to allow the synths that reach the point of being self aware/maturity to leave if they want and just replace them? Setting up a test that allows those who want to leave if they pass would satisfy the railroad or it should. since all synths still have the recall code if one after leaving becomes a threat to the commonwealth then send a courser as normal

One of the better Dialogue Quests. With Choice and Consequences, Character depth. Alan's 'Failure' is not that he mislead Liam, but that he did not Choose to go into Exile with his Son. That's what a good father would do.

On a writing quality evaluation the FO4 Dialogue is moronic in many places, has zero impact on the world and rarely results in anything valuable to Nate. Either in a material sense or in any developmental sense. I can dissect the FO4 story a dozen different ways to show how weak and poorly developed it is. Every faction is flawed in its presentation and story arc. The main story requires so many improper decisions to simply exist, makes it an insult to creative writing. The implementation of the Super Mutants is utterly flawed. The tactics of the BoS and Institute are both moronically stupid. All Dialogue Quests are great, indeed..

You seem to have lost the plot entirely; The tagline is likely meant to say that war, regardless of the parties involved, the terrain it is fought on, the technology used, or whatever other factors all result in the same exact thing time and time again throughout human history: Death, destruction, and suffering for all involved.

If we go with the perhaps unwarranted assumption that they are trying to thematically imply that war is always pointless, then I would say that also is incorrect. There's a real and important difference between fighting over oil revenues and defending your homeland from tyrants. Death, destruction and suffering may be constants, but there are VERY important things that do change. And that, plus its literal inaccuracy, is why it's a dumb tag line.

Why doesn't the institute stop Gen 3 synth production, take what they've learned and improve gen 1s or 2s? I don't recall the part where anyone but DiMA was arguing for gen 1s, institute removes need to compete with railroad, and stops the internal ethics debate (I think Deacon mentions something similar)

I think I heard somewhere that Gen 1 & 2 's can not be improved any further without turning them into Gen 3 's. Also, other than DiMA, Glory has moral scruples about killing Gen 1 's
