Believe me, Skippy has his own unique way of thought-out modulating going on behind the scene, so to call it, that NO ONE other I know of will do. And especially for Absynth and Massive patches - it is all categorized, described in DETAIL what makes and changes what in patch attribute view. That is something INCREDIBLE! Just that is worth the 30 bucks itself. Thank you Skippy again. I believe there is many satisfied, no, happy people using your patches.

You seem to be the only one on youtube who seems to know what they're talking about with synthesis anymore. All these other 'tutorials' are people showing you how to re-create a sound without actually understanding it. Thanks for existing and spending time to make these videos.

@scalenguy05 - for some of us with slightly older computers, there is a feature in almost every sequencer now that will bounce down a virtual instrument track, bypass the instrument and play an audio file in the background so that your computer doesn't have to calculate the synth (audio is almost a 0 on the CPU). This way you could have 8 RAZOR tracks playing but if they are all "frozen" - then you could play them and your computer doesn't cough and die...

GLAD to hear you nailed it down... most problems seem to come from an out of date plug-in - same with FM8, Massive and Absynth 5 as well... Enjoy the fresh blood!

Great quality video, thanks very much! Have been looking at buying the Bass Invader bundle from NI which includes Razor, was a bit on-the-fence about it as there's no downloadable demo, so I came to KZbin to see what demos people have posted. Most really irritated me but yours was fantastic, you clearly know what you're doing, and to top it off you come across as just a really good guy. Am definitely going to buy Razor and most likely also your patches too. Love the steak-dinner comparison :)

Many modern sequencers have an ability called "Freeze". This turns a plug-in track into a bounced audio track in the background and bypasses the plug-in. Saves MASSIVE amounts of processing in many cases. So you can build a song with 12 tracks "frozen" that would not play on your computer if it was not frozen.... if that doesn't make sense then do some searching here or on the web. Freezing tracks is documented in many places....

Not everyone is going to see this. Some people are just blind. Don't worry, others are not. You do a great job of showing us how to use the fun software and you get us a collection of cool sounding patches to start with. And I am just saying, if these patches are anything close to those for Massive and Absynth, which I believe they are (don't have them yet), there is HUGE amount of work behind them. I can see it's not just "start with initial sound tweak few things and save a new patch, done."

It would seem to me that the real hidden power in Razor is in it's additive digital synthesis sounds. That is, not concentrating on filters and wobbles for dubstep/trance analog-type sounds, but complicated, rapidly subtly evolving sounds. Sort of like a modern Synclavier if you will. You have some of those sounds here, such as "Holodeck", "Freefall" and "Mod Wheel Shorty", are perfect examples.

Only certain sequencer/DAW's have this ability. Logic Pro for example does. It manages CPU usage by bouncing down a virtual instrument or audio track PLUS any insert effects on that track is an invisible audio file that it plays instead of the plug-in. There is a check box you enable in Logic, hit play and it renders the audio file while it plays the song back at 4x speed. I am not sure of what other sequencers do this but I know Logic is not the only one. Search for "Logic Pro Freeze Tutorial"

@Cubanbees - search here at KZbin about putting controller numbers into a sequence in Ableton Live. Modulation is CC01. Pitch Bend is it's own unique controller. But you should easily be able to put this into a track. I'm learning Ableton myself so if I knew I'd totally tell you... if this was Logic Pro, np. But I'm not sure with Ableton, sorry.

Sorry for the terribly late reply! Yes, Razor requires Reaktor to work. Reaktor is a very interesting "sand box" - if you know how to put the pieces together, you can build all sorts of simple to really complex synthesizers. Razor is just a setup in Reaktor of some really unique sound tools added with the latest version of Reaktor - along with a very complex interface = sounds like nothing else I've ever heard. So it's worth the effort and it will work in Logic Pro 9.

Sort of - it's a bit more involved than that. While anybody can "freeze" a track by bouncing it down to a wav file, the applications that can "freeze" actually do a high resolution bounce of the track AND bypass the plug-ins on that track to save computer processing power. If you click off the freeze button, then it deletes the audio file and un-mutes all the plug-ins automatically. So it's a bit more efficient and easy to use than doing manual bounces of tracks.... hope that helps :D

In order to load Razor you first have to have Reaktor and then buy the Razor Ensemble. It's not cheap per say but for new sounds made by NO OTHER synthesizer, it's totally worth it. Maschine can load Reaktor, then load the Razor Ensemble and then load my patches - but these are not included with Maschine.

Anyone who doesn't want to pay for presets should simply make their own (may not be as good tho). Anyone, like me, who is much better at composition and arrangement than sound design might be willing to pay for the time savings and inspiration that people like John provide. This is his business. By the way, "Sneaky Neville" is worth the price alone IMO. I put Maserati Harmonics on it with Dada LIfe Sausage Fattener and it sounds BEAST. Thanks John. Keep up the good work.

Wish I had a library of my own to point you towards - but I don't so I'll give you 2 suggestions. If you need techno/trance/dance drums, then the Xfer Records Deadmau5 drum sample library is beyond useful, in my opinion (it's not cheap at around $90 but these samples are the real deal). For DubStep search for "Balkansky Dark Dub and glitch". Again not cheap but totally useful samples. Good luck and I thank you for your support and kind words!!

To answer your Q's: 1) All assigning is done on a per patch basis so the Mod wheel can change different things in each patch in different amounts. John, have followed you a long time and would like to challenge you. Razor is the right synth to make a nice metallic wobble used by artists like Au5. You should consider making a new set of patches for Razor and cover this specific sound as I feel a lot of people would be interested in using it. I think, going forward you should include more sounds in the libraries that are appropriate for progressive dubstep styles like Xilent and Seven Lions. The Skrillex/Zomboy sounds have been covered. TY!

In OS X, Reaktor 5 is at version 5.6.2. Razor is at version 1.2. Service Center is the application that is installed in your Native Instruments folder with every plug-in you purchase. Service Center is how you update NI plug ins. If you bought the plug-ins, then Service Center is installed. If you're installing cracks, then it won't install Service Center (AFAIK). Many modern DAW's have the ability to do a bounce of the track and mute the plug-in in the background automatically for you. This way, the DAW plays a stereo 32-bit audio track instead of playing the plug-in. If you're using Razor or Omnisphere with 8 parts playing, this can basically give you a whole lot of additional power to use additional plug-ins. I use this all the time.... :D

HELP! I need help deciding which vst synth to get for electro house and normal house. I have a budget of $200 dollars and I have narrowed it down to a couple of options: A combo of Native instruments Monark and Razor which is the one I really want, but I fear that this combo will not be fit for this genre. I also thought about ReFx Nexus, and Lennar Digital's Sylenth1, which seem cool. I also thought about Native Instruments Massive and got the demo version but it seems hard to understand.
