Here are a couple of shots from HOOD, part of the Plumbbob series in 1957 of atomic tests at the Nevada Test Site. Hood was the largest atmospheric test conducted at the Nevada Test Site.
Some people look on at the Hood cloud from atop Mt Angel outside the Nevada Test Site.

One of the soldiers there described night descending on the regions out in the distance, "like the aperture of a camera," while closer to ground zero remained in apparent daylight even as the mushroom cloud began to cool down and dim. You can see what he meant in the first shot of this footage.

Great to see true colors of a test: the bluish-white initial fireball dissipating to the weapon debris plasma torus in the mushroom head. The only colors not visible were in the purply-indigo to blue fission halo around the head, which was understandable for the very slow (low ASA) color reel films available at that time. I like how the older woman chickened out from watching the fireball directly through the almost opaque green, plastic-lensed flash goggles. She looked away, like the child next to her. Nuclear fireballs are nearly 50 times the luminance intensity of the Sun’s photosphere, per unit area. I have observer report on the 1962 Bluegill Triple Prime fireball was nearly intolerable to watch through flash goggles. I’ve see through surplus goggles used at the test site, the noon hour Sun on blue sky day looks almost unobservable dark green through the goggles. You couldn’t look for large sunspots through them. A 100 W bulb filament is also very dark through them. Was that observer point at Mt. Charleston? Locals commonly gathered with press to watch and film shots from there. It’s about the same distance away from the site.

@@missprimrose4132 I’d be a really old guy if I were there during testing.😀 During a day bus tour of the NNSS (earlier called Nevada Test Site), they sold some old goggles used in tests there, in a super lucky moment in time. A guy I knew for years, Paul, grabbed one. I wish I had such a goggle. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Collectibles offered like that could cause a serious scuffle among those who truly value the huge history associated with them.
@EK14MeV
@EK14MeV 2 жыл бұрын
@@missprimrose4132 The ONLY way to prove that fallout was the cause of later cancers would be to take bone marrow samples. Bone marrow is where heavy metals including uranium and (especially) plutonium collect in the body-since plutonium does not occur naturally. It’s very troubling that most of the people seen in this propaganda film died of cancers not long after it was produced. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3qod2Nni9CMorM The communities near the site, especially St. George, UT suffered terribly, not the troops. Their stories were incredible, with the ability to taste the fallout in the air, and children left outside to play at school during fallout passing over. It’s outrageously irresponsible that nobody was confined inside during the tests. On the other hand, testing needed to be done, to produce competent nuclear policies in military science. This tells details of the greatest US government blood money payout in our history. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGO7iZ-FZ5ljl8U Norris Bradbury’s response was awful, in typical technocratic style, basically dismissing the victims as reasonable sacrifices. Yet he was also implicated in the legal issues as a many years leader of Los Alamos during atmospheric testing, following the firing of Oppenheimer.

My father was at Hood. He was 18 years old and in the Air Force. He went in at age 17. His friends were in 12th grade while he was witnessing the largest detonation of a nuclear weapon (74 kilotons) on the North American continent (Hood). He was just a teenager from Murray, Utah. He saw one more detonation as part of the Plumbbob Series at the Nevada Test Site. He was the State Commander for the state of Utah for Atomic Veterans for a long time. He spent most of his adult life helping other atomic veterans get their benefits. He had nightmares after witnessing this detonation for the rest of his life. Although he was a G.I. guinea pig, he was always patriotic and proud to be an American. 🇺🇸 He’s definitely in a better place now.

Unlike regular munitions, the flood of x-rays impact nitrogen and oxygen and ionize all surrounding air hence the brightness max is about 1/2 second after detonation. The chemistry also turns Nitrogen into Nitrogen Oxides and the brown colors surrounding immediate area. Now find a slowed chemical explosive explosion and compare.

Small feedback: give a couple seconds...just a couple, of filler before showing the detonation, so that the play buttons and all the KZbin overlays have time to minimize. A tiny intro or just text even, like a slide of 3 seconds of text before just "Play -> 0.001sec later explosion" would be my humble recommendation to slightly improve this awesome channel!

@-danR
@-danR 2 жыл бұрын
Welp, it _was_ rather night-ish. If this looks like night 2:04 it's because it was well before dawn. Most of the Plumbob series are timed for UT = GMT = "Zulu time" . Thus 8 hours must be subtracted from what we'd think was noon. This is more consistent with post-shot 2:10 scene of onlookers. The camera must have been loaded with a fast film to catch the early pre-dawn light. Or perhaps their fast movements were due to the shutter-speed and frame-rate being slowed down to catch as much light as possible (or maybe Atom Central just wanted to move things right along...)
@ego4551
@ego4551 2 жыл бұрын
@@-danR thanks for the explanation. I got a bit confused. I thought the exposure time was way down to not blow out the images completely during the early stages for some cameras on some H-bomb tests.
