the previous plumber absolutely destroyed this floor joist. When you try to be a tile pro and do good work making sure your floor joist framing is good. When doing home improvement projects it is important do do things right so they can last.

I recommend next time stagger the bolts never put them in a straight line. Keep up the good work!

This will work well. I love over-engineering. Technially, I would have also sistered to the adjacent joist in the center by the drain. I would have used structural screws and glue for everything.

This happens because framer’s cant use a tape measure. Toilets are always 12 to 13 inches off the wall behing them. Framers dont want to take the time to figure this out ahead so plumbers get tired of the same mistakes over and over.

What make and mode palm nailer are you using for the joist hangers? I have a full size ridgid and it’s a little too big to go in straight on some of the close holes on the hanger

Is there a guideline for proper shower joist installation that I can show to my HOA. I have the same issue and have water damage to the unit before but need to proof to my HOA it’s not the drain and it’s the joists.

Who would think it was ok to cut that much of a joist out? Looks like a solid fix.

The plumber likely knew this fix was coming and just wanted to get his job done. It's framer's job to fix framing.

would this be the same process for a ceiling joist to make a passthrough for a vent pipe? can I just cut the joist and do my boxing, or do I need to temp support it?

Were you shooting hanger bailed with a nail gun? Are you shooting through the metal or actually aligning with the holes in the hanger? I’ve always used the little hex head hanger screws.

The bolts are placed on the beam’s neutral axis. They will not be stressed to any significant degree. In other words, they are doing nothing.

exactly he put the holes in the NA . Also the joist is subject to BM so glue does nothing practically - I think the idea for the sistering is to increase the section modulus . Put the fasteners away from the midddle but not close to the edges

Lag Bolts, and you don't want to install them how he did because he basically made a perforated like for the joists to crack along. You don't use screws for construction unless you are Canadian, you use nails (usually 16 penny, ring shank).

That's kind of a loaded question. If it's completely open like it is in the video then it's probably going to be around a $500 add-on, or additional work order if they're there doing other things. Otherwise if you got somebody that's got a come there to the ceiling out we'll get access to everything and you're probably looking at $1500 to $2,000.

Yeah plumber did exactly what you want him to do. Theres only 2 things plumber could have done differently. 1. Put your toilet flange elsewhere. (You would not like this) 2. Drop below the joist and make you have to create some ugly bulkhead.(you wouldnt like that either). 1hr to box that in is small potatoes especially at the phase your construction is at.

The correct thing would be to have them fix the framing before cutting through the joist.

I'd blame the architect first then a carpenter
@nbco55
@nbco55 Жыл бұрын
I would say it comes down to the carpenter not necessarily locating correctly where the plumbing is, and trying to avoid the exact on center layout for that plumbing trap. Sometimes you can shift your layout and avoid most things but not always. A little forethought and communication between the plumber and the framer would have been helpful in this situation originally. But this seems to be a retrofit.

are floor joist usually 2x10 or can you use 2x6?
@rjamsbury1
@rjamsbury1 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert but 2x6 would be undersized for most joists. It depends on the span - bigger span wider joist, sometimes you will need 2x12!
@nbco55
@nbco55 Жыл бұрын
Other times you can reduce your spacing to 12" if you are at a tail end of the 2 x 10 loading limit.

Speaking as a plumber. It’s not our job to move joists. We tell the carpenter there a problem, and it’s up to them to fix it. Personally I’d wait until it’s fixed but sometimes you need to get the work done. We don’t have time to wait after the framers.
