Exactly what i needed! Im kinda dumb when it comes to plumbing and was desperately trying to figure out how to connect rigid to flexible pipe types. The glue just didnt seem like enough to me but i couldnt figure out what the best connection options were. I have a deep duck pond going into a bog filter up the hill

Very good informative video , i use flexible pipe from pumps to pressure pipe with threaded fittings to ball valves easy for maintenance it runs up through waterfalls and stream to filters and bog before returning back got it all fine tuned now , thanks to watching you videos on bog filter design 😊

I think i know what i have to do now, walk around the big green store with my filter & hose & work something out before i start buying pipe & wholesaws for my barell thanks for all yr vids ive got a timy bog over a 100 litre crate doing a great job copied off yr mini bog vid with some baby koi im growing up , but it wont be long until they need a bigger home so getting my olive barell fired up in a baby pool to get plants & bacteria going till i build a pond love yr chanell

Great video again Kev. I've found you don't need to attack a breather pipe. I just drilled a 3-4mm diameter hole at the top of the inlet pipe and it does the trick (65Lish bog filter)

Since I already had a 1,000 gph swimming pool filter (that wasn't being used) I used that as a pump for my bog. I used your bog in a barrel design, but had to get creative to get the water from the pond and into the bog. I ended up using a combination of pvc pipe and pool filter hoses, and used silicone and metal hose clamps to seal the connections between the flexible hose and the pvc. It's all been working really well for a few months now. I imagine the pool hose will crack eventually, but should easy to replace. I might get better hoses next time, but I was running out of money! lol Pool supplies can be less expensive, but you get what you pay for.

I have a plastic container full of fittings. But sometimes I still don't have a fitting to work. I have a small waterfall filter. They put a massive hole in bottom to connect pipe for 2" bulkhead fitting. My hose is only 3/4" so it takes a lot of fittings to reduce it down.

Put a cap inside it, then drill your own hole and put a uniseal fitting in at the dimensions you require.

I don't know if you have any experience with this, but if you could do a video on pond plumbing in areas that freeze (typically 2-3 m down where I live) it would be extremely helpful.

I can try. Of course I don’t have first hand experience so it would be purely anecdotal. The main issue I would address is that if the pond is going to be running all year the pipes need to be below the frost line. If the pond is shut down the plumbing needs to be laid and configured in a way that allows for no water to be left inside the plumbing over winter.

Yeah burying the pipe below that frost line won’t be feasible. That’s some extreme cold!

I think it can be done but would need a fair amount of regular maintenance.

Do you ever work in areas with freezing conditions? Im wondering about pipe placement to keep hoses from freezing. As you said, keeping the water lines inside the pond makes sense for leaks, I suppose if their also below ice depth, then they wont freeze up. Any advice would be appreciated. I don’t have freezing conditions here. Like you said if you keep the pipes below freezing depth you can run year round. In really cold climates you would run the plumbing lines so they can be completely drained first the winter.

Just off the top of my head, I'd like to know the best way to run the plumbing from the pump to the pond and back again. Penetrate the liner? Over the liner? If over the liner, what's the best way to hide it without creating a low point? If you have the intake for the pump in an intake bay, do you still need the bucket or can you just bury the intake pipe under some rocks behind the weir to keep the solids out? How much sound proofing is necessary to eliminate the noise and how do you do it since a lot of soundproofing materials are not meant for water? Are external pumps really more elelctrically efficient than submerged pumps like I've heard? are there differences in dynamic head capacity since an external pump won't have the pressure of water around it to compensate for? What are common issues with external pumps and how do you fix them? and anything else you think might be informative and interesting. :D @@Ozponds

I don’t think I’m the right guy for the job. I keep everything simple. I’ve always been transparent about how I run my plumbing and construct my filters. I don’t have any external pumps and I personally don’t put holes in the liner. I’m sure someone more qualified has already created the content you seek 👍

Hi Kev - I am also Kev, from Johannesburg in South Africa. Just a question that is slightly off the topic of this video. I have recently (a year ago) built a small 2100lt Koi pond. I have installed a shower filter on the pond and it appears to be doing a reasonable job of keeping the water clean, but I know the media I am using (lava rock) is not ideal. I am definitely going to be adding an additional filter to the pond and am leaning heavily towards a bog filter. Now my question - can I plant various herbs into the bog filter - like basil, coriander, chilli etc? almost using the filter like an hydroponic garden? My wife is Asian and she uses a LOT of these kinds of fresh herbs in our food. I realise the hydroponic 'gardens' use a fill-and-drain cycle, but that would not help with establishing the bacterial colonies in the media. Thanks for your reply. Regards, Kev.

G’day Kev (great name 😉). You could use a flood and drain system. Aquaponics is what led me to bog filters. As long as the media stays wet the bacteria are happy. The reason for the flood and drain is to allow air to the roots. Some plants like mint don’t care if their feet stay constantly wet but others do. Therefore flood and drain gives you more options in regard to plant selection.

I prefer it that way. But if you are going to have a valve on it you can have it below water level.
