In episode 59, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and leadership coach and journalist Jo Confino discuss conflicts in our world. They focus on the war in the Middle East, through the prism of Thich Nhat Hanh's teachings, which remain so relevant in the current moment.
Exploring Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings in relation to conflict, pain, and the path to peace, the presenters investigate ways to not take sides during a conflict, and how Thay managed this during the Vietnam War; deep listening, holding space, and transforming the conflict in us; keeping communities together; cultivating nondiscrimination; walking the path of love and understanding in times of war; and gratitude.
Brother Phap Huu further shares around Thay's legacy of dealing with conflict and the joint retreats he organized for Palestinians and Israelis in Plum Village; ways to show love for humanity; right action and enabling healing in the present moment; the importance of small acts of kindness; our own true presence of peace and nondiscrimination.
Jo also opens up about what it feels like to go through a “period of deconstruction”; being the child of refugees and the deep connection this can create to generational trauma; dealing with the tensions created in organizations by global conflicts; and fear, and how to not be consumed by despair, but, instead, how to feel it in order to transform it.
The episode ends with offerings of gratitude and a short meditation guided by Brother Phap Huu.

How do you not judge this evil ? I’m shocked by plum village stance. Thank goodness we had Churchill and not Plum village in 1930s or we would be living under the Third Reich . When they come for the Buddhists- you’ll have no one left to speak up for you.

Much appreciation for your POV I can rely on being from a broader perspective.❣️ There's been much confusion and I get the feeling we all want the same peace and cooperation with one another without really knowing. Thank you for being present. This is a unprecedented spiritual war. 💙

Respectfully, may I add a thought: we get out of this by remembering that we are of one tribe: the human family. It's not a matter of 'wokeism' (as someone commented on) by acknowledging the pain being suffered by the Palestinian AND the Israeli people. Death is death no matter to whom it happens. We also need to follow the Buddha's teaching of remembering that everyone has at one time or another, been our mother and that we all need to remember that person's kindness to us in a previous life. This horrific killing by bombs is killing all of our mothers and it is not woke to call attention to that nor to cry over the blood spilled by both sides. And, if you further follow Buddha's teachings, then yes, even Hamas needs kindness and compassion because they are suffering their own samsara (I am NOT saying that what they did was right; it was heinous and disgusting because they erred against the precept of no killing) from their own making. what I hear is Brother Phap Huu being burdened by yet another terrible event in the world and there are no good answers to how to get mankind off this rotten samsara wheel.

I just feel plum village followers are very leftie , crying for the suffering of Palestinians caused by Israelis but not for suffering caused to Palestinians by Hamas… I do not think Thay would fall into the two-sidesism he was more sophisticated.

Respectfully, not sure Brother Phap Huu is educated enough in the world - the historical dimension- to be up to this & fear he is under the influence of Wokeism taking over Plum Village since Thay’s disappearance. Not sure Thay would have applied moral equivalence,, this “both sideism” to a terror group , nor equivalence between Hamas and interest of Palestinians. Very disappointed in Plum Village aligning itself with the woke movement.

Did you not listen to the part where he said that Tyne did not take sides and that his side was the site of peace, Israel nor Hamas are on the side of peace You are the one who is lost in politics

@@theminingsage Hi. I do adore Brother Phap Huu . I just think that while Thay had a doctorate and was extremely educated, plum village is falling into the Woke ideology. Only a Woke person would think the Palestinians were suffering because of the Israelis- they live under a jihadi dictatorship and are brainwashed whereas the Woke believe they’re colonized . I’m not lost in politics- but really they haven’t even been able to identify the bodies of October 7 and plum village is chiming in with the @both sidesism so characteristic of the Woke . I just don’t think Thay would fall for this. I’m very disappointed in plum village .
