Wow!! Toss the Romans - except that very small one, it's cute. It's the flint core that's taken the day. A dream find. The flakes off that could be knapped for virtually any job that required some finishing. Perhaps arrowheads for small game as well. Whoever lost that had to be mighty miffed. Core's all prepped, ready to go, a few flakes struck off, & where did it go? It's a beauty. Thanks again for another fine vid. Take your break, & see you when you're back.

Hi Alex, you certainly had a good day on the Romans! That’s a beautiful piece of flint. We find a lot of that sort of thing here in the United States. We find arrowheads spearpoints, all kinds of tools that Native Americans had used for thousands of years. It’s not unusual at all here to find arrowheads ,spear points, and such in the plowed fields and along the river’s. I have certainly found my fair share of arrowheads while detecting. what you may have is a chunk of flint that was carried not just to make one point out of but perhaps several. that chunk that you have would make several bird points and small animal projectiles. You were very fortunate to find that that is a great find and I’m happy for you I truly am. Give Tasci a scratch behind the ear for me. ~Paul

The usual great finds. Finding flints are nothing unusual in Texas and New Mexico. My family's ranch had a nice size hill we dubbed Flint Hill. My brother and I would roam around it looking for arrowheads. We are having a foul heat wave. It got to 106 today. 107 yesterday. Dogs got a bath as they were getting pretty stinky and they loved the clean feeling. I hope you have a wonderful holiday....after getting some business done.

💗💗Love your videos Ally ,how wonderful to find the flint for making tools and I wonder if nearby villagers are direct decendants of these ancient Ancestors..I once watched a programme on the people who live in Cheddar Gorge and they tested their DNA with some bones that were found in Cheddar caves and some matches were found !!! We often took our past dogs for a run up on the Ridgeway path here in Wiltshire and there are amazing large knuckles of flint everywhere I would collect a few pieces each time and decorate my garden..they do look,lovely when the rain had been on them..best wishes from XxxShaz &Terry and little Merlin..💗💗💗

Thanks for another wonderful video Alexander. Can I ask, the land you are on has seedlings in it and you said you are being careful, how do you assure the farmer you are going to be careful etc with his crops? The reason I ask is that if I take up metal detecting in future I imagine this is one of the first hurdles I should expect to come accross.
@HolzHammerSagas
@HolzHammerSagas Жыл бұрын
You really do so little damage if any Andrew, but obviously if the farmer feels differently he will rightly bot let you... you should see what gets left behind after harvest; the odd seedling dug up by a detetctorist will make absolutely no difference! Hope all well and All the Best, Alexander

Hi Alexander. Another great day in the sunshine in that exceptional field. I think your Allectus reverse is "PAX AVG", so minted between 293 and 296 AD. and the mint mark looks like London. That Vespasian is great despite the worn reverse. In your size line up, the second to last one is mid to late 4th C and may be Valentinian II. The smallest one is late 4th C- 5th C but I can't find an obverse like it on Wildwinds, so it is very intriguing. Best of luck with the next adventure.

The core is mesolithic and blades (flakes at least 2x longer than their width) removed from it were used as raw material to make tiny blade tools - microliths. The previous industrial period was the upper Paleolithic which is when blade tools and the removal of blades from cores was invented. Most blade tools were larger and were replaced by microliths during the Mesolithic as big game open range hunting was replaced with smaller forest dwelling game. Neither upper Paleolithic nor Mesolithic populations favored cave dwelling but rather having open air base camps near bodies of water because fishing was a main source of protein. Your core was only partly used and would have supplied many more blades had it continued to be used as a flint source. Blades were removed from the top end where the underlying flint is exposed and in a circular manner until the core was used up. Give that dog a hug for me!

@@HolzHammerSagas I was born in Winchester, spent all my holidays with my grandparents near Nether Wallop and ended up living in Medstead, not far from Alton, the home of Sweet Fanny Adams. There's a ton of history around the Wallops and my Grandad often picked up bits of Roman pottery which he donated to the Andover Museum. I miss all that...

@@HolzHammerSagas one of my few prized possessions is a small thumb scraper from the same era. I find it absolutely amazing that we can pick these items up from our gardens and handle them, knowing our ancestors worked that stone, it's baffling. Gold coins and coins in general have their special place, but these stone items are just something else. We recently found a brilliant fossil , which is next level, an entire worm/eel, curled up into a spiral.

Wow! Things come up in that field the way I used to find them in the late 1970s. Georgian and Roman bronze coins usually have lost their patina. Perhaps it is the sandy soil as you say but I wonder if there's been less chemical use on that field. ANother excellent video but I wish you wouldn't upload them when I'm trying to work. 🤨😁

I learned the Parthians were very resilient to the Roman's. Similar to how Germania tribes were. Accept the Parthians used lots of horsemanship and archery which caused Roman's to fail against them many times until the Roman's adapted. I'm no expert. Still learning myself 😁
