Things to keep in mind: different body types have different needs, for example, and apple shape. We have large busts, short necks and thin legs. flattering choices are Narrow v necks(to elongate the neck) and the narrowest part of the body is right below the bust , so avoid designs that come in at the waist. Pears shapes look great in a boat neck and A line skirt, because they tend to have longer more defined necks, smaller busts and waist with larger thighs. Hourglass girls are the luckiest because they can pull off almost any style as long as it is tailored to fit. Zoe's color blocking suggestions were spot on and a great way to direct they and resculpt the figure. Best of luck on your collection!!!!!!!

@@discodiscordia Wow, I am not body shaming. I was describing different shapes and how to visually balance them from a design perspective because she asked for advice.
@RobinSchneider4 жыл бұрын
@@discodiscordia Would you rather oval and triangle? Obviously, women have more complex shapes, but I was typing on a phone and wasn't about to type women with a large bust whose waist is the same or bigger, with a short neck, broad shoulders, and thinner legs.(but you would probably take issue with that too) I'm not telling anyone what to wear just talking about balancing visual proportions from a design perspective. As in 40/60 versus 50/50 and shoulder princess vs armhole princess for a longer line. Also, empire lines should be lower because many women size 14 and up have larger breasts that sit lower, and that will give a better fit. We are talking about ready to wear fashion here.
@RobinSchneider4 жыл бұрын
Hey Zoe, I love that you did plus. It's what I did before I started teaching. I'd like to add 1 more super important consideration when designing for plus.....UNDERGARMENTS. We can't go without 'em. I always made sure that tanks had straps wide enough to cover bra straps. Spaghetti straps are hard to wear because they don't make 40DD bras with delicate straps. Strapless bras are also hot and uncomfortable to wear under light and airy summer dresses. Always make sure there is an undergarment that can be worn with your design.
@lynn8584 жыл бұрын
Yes! Please! A dress with a full circle skirt and a halter neck is theoretically great on a woman with a large chest and thick thighs, but the only option for comfortably supporting large breasts that doesn’t involve shoulder straps is a corset. Which, if you have a custom fit one is a great supportive option, but a) very few people do b) the dress isn’t shaped for that figure anyway, because almost no one has one.

Couple of things: it's not about grading up. It's about designing for different bodies *from the start.* Thinking about different bodies as part of collecting ideas for the initial designs is more organic within the process than forcing up, down, in, out, etc. Two: not all design has to be about making the body look smaller via texture or color. That's how we end up with sixteen different color blocked black and white a-line dresses in FF collections. It's boring. Last: giant armscyes look worse and make it more difficult to move. Please don't be afraid to set in the sleeve and use a freaking hidden gusset if you need to. I would kill for a dress shirt that fit my bust AND my shoulders without having to have it tailored. THANK YOU ZOE

I live in an area with a larger number of more voluptuous women and no store that supports them. So I've decided to fill that gap. You are completely correct that too many designers just upscale designs without considering how the elements will transfer to a different shape. I believe there are certain shapes that a more flattering for different body shapes. Now I'm learning and critically assessing outfit designs and construction. This is video is so interesting.
@LegoGirl19907 ай бұрын
"too many designers just upscale designs" People - who probably don't understand - get mad when they don't. I've seen new clothing companies get dragged online for not offering plus sizes. I'm looking at their clothes like, "Well, duh, those wouldn't work for us."

Yes Yes and Yes to every tip!! As someone who isn't tiny I tend to notice these things about "plus" size clothing as I shop and you are so right! I hate the back pocket placement on most pants as well as the yoke shape, but I especially hate them on plus sized pants because not only is the size and shape of said items often not flattering the placement is also off putting. The pockets are often way too low on the butt and usually way to far to the side and as a result make the but look flat and wide... as you can tell I have a long history of hatred when it comes to most things related back pockets (front pockets too, but that is for another day). Anyway now that I am done ranting.. excellent video full of great tips!

OMG! Love this, would like to see more on curvier women because the entire world is not a size 6. The average woman is a 14 to 18, trying to find these sizes in stores is impossible. Everything stops at a size 14 nowadays. I work in retail high end fashion, and for a lot of my women we have to reconstruct garments and tailor so much it’s ridiculous. I’m a fluffy woman as well and I have to explain to all my new clients we’re going to have to tailor & you won’t be able to wear that dress tonight or for the next month. It’s sad and exasperating.😢
@ajjones80134 жыл бұрын
Zoe - your videos are always so good! I always wanted to go to fashion design school. As a person who has always been a larger size, I couldn't resolve the dissonance between the edgy, boundary-pushing, tiny-sized student work featured in the glossy school pamphlets and the frumpy lane bryant clothes in my closet - the most fashionable things I could find for my size at the time. I couldn't see how I could fit into that world so I chickened out. Now in my mid 30's I'm tired of paying too much for clothes I don't like, made from terrible fabrics, that don't fit me, so I am designing my wardrobe myself. So, in a way, I do get to fulfill my teenage dreams to be a fashion designer. Your videos have been invaluable to that process - so thank you! I feel that princess seams are a secret weapon for the curvy figure. Have you ever studied the tailoring on Dolly Parton's shirts and jackets? Princess seams all the way baby! And a testament to the idea that it is possible to fit and flatter any shape. Whoever is her tailor is a master of their craft. As a stout sized curvy-bodied consumer ("stout" being the term used to describe plus sized pre WWII) I feel like most of the design blunders in the plus-sized market stem directly from designers not understanding proper garment fitting on larger bodies. You are right that just continuing to grade up your pattern will almost never work for plus size because larger bodies have different bust/waist/hip ratios than the smaller sized bodies. It is really important to remember that fruit-monikered shapes (apple shape, pear shape, etc.) are exaggerated the bigger you get. This also means that you need to keep in mind that there is a bigger difference between standing measurements and sitting measurements - so be mindful of stretch and ease. There is nothing quite like loving how a pair of jeans fit in the fitting room only to get home, put them on, and sit down in them only to find you feel like a sausage. Thanks again Zoe! I too would love a construction video.

Excellent video! Yes when designing for fuller bodies one has to take into account proportions, like you mentioned the example of the rectangle vs. the square. And also its much more than grading the pattern to a bigger size because again the proportion and placement of lines can make or break the silhouette.
