This is ply on the Fly, Spinning Sara style 😉 This is my way, it is definitely not THE way, nor the only way.
Ply on the Fly is a method of chain plying your yarn as you go, instead of spinning all your singles then going back to ply all the singles.
This video is meant to help you if you are a spinner that understands the mechanics of spinning and plying on the Fly, but need help mastering the technique.
Please let me know if you need any additional help, or if you want to see any other techniques.

This is the BEST ply on fly tutorial I’ve seen yet! I’ve been spindle spinning for nearly 2 years and have never been able to understand how this is done. Until now! Thank you so much for making this video!😊

This is such a great and clear video! I'm freshly out in the wild with my first Turkish spindle (also my first ever spindle) and my next goal is chain plying!

Dear Mrs. Flick! Thank you very much for this interesting video. I'm a spinner and just got my first Turkish Spindle a year ago. I haven't used it much, but I had NO idea you could do this. Amazing! You are so talented and so very kind to teach the masses how to do this. Bravo and thank you very much! I think I'm going to have to watch your video a few more times just to make sure I've got it before I actually try it. Cheers!

This is a great tutorial. I just had a really rough time with my last spin plying from my turtles (novice spinner+ first major spin with my Turkish spindle= disaster after mishaps 🤦‍♀️) so I'm all for trying ply on the fly. My question is, how do you initially start it? I've watched your video where you do ply on the fly with a top whorl, and it was a huge help seeing that initial set up for the first loop. Seeing as there's no hook here to anchor the starting chain, I'm trying to mentally picture what needs to be done with the Turkish spindle for the starting set up and coming up confused.

I love your videos, but I have to admit, because of the angle, I had a really hard time following along. I'm so much a visual learner, what can I say? If you ever get the chance to re-shoot this while someone films you, I love to see it! Thanks for all your videos!

Spinning Sara thank you. But if it turns out it's only me, you don't need to do that. I wanted to send you a pic of my cop to get your oponion as to whay you thought and to see if it looks right. It almost looks too tall, like a big tall fat hump. Lol

need to ask a question....if you are plying are you turning the spindle in the opposite direction to the twist in the single??? for example..I twist my single to the right..so do I ply to the left or right?
@TheSpinningSara
@TheSpinningSara 7 жыл бұрын
pink pussycat yarns yes, if you spin your singles to the right, you need to ply to the left. Unless you are making a crepe yarn or an opposing ply yarn, you always want to insert ply twist in the opposite direction to how you spin your singles 😄

Thank you for making this video, it really helps me to understand the ply concept with the loop. I plan to buy a Turkish Spindle, but am not sure what size to get. What do you have? I do spin on reg drop spindles, and a wheel, but my yarn is thicker than yours, closer to a DK. Would a large turkish spindle be too big and heavy? The one I'm looking at is about 23 grams. Thank you for any guidance.

I know this is a bit late, but 23 grams would be perfect for the weight you're trying to spin!

I want to learn this method too! I do have a question. If your Turkish spindle is full, but you have more single to ply how do you transfer the plyed yarn on to something else? Hope this makes sense. Thank you

Terry Robbins all you do is grab a stitch marker, or Bobby pin or something that can hold your last loop so it is easy to find, and break your single. Remove the turtle of plied yarn and start a new one. Once you have your whole project completed you can connect the turtles together while winding them into a Hank. I actually have some turtles that need to be hanked, so I can do a video for you...if you'd like 😊
