Join us for our Plymouth UK Tour - filmed in July 2021. This port city is full of history - going back as the Bronze Age! It was from here in 1620 that the Pilgrim Fathers sailed to America and founded Plymouth Colony, the second English settlement in what was to become the USA. Join our Plymouth walking tour and wander through the streets and harbour. If you’ve wondered what’s Plymouth like? - then here’s your chance to see for yourself.

@@002lisamarie Indeed they are... but Exeter was blitzed too like Plymouth and badly as they say 'replanned'. But otherwise a nice lively city with a good University and a lovely Cathedral and Cathedral Green. There is also the River Exe. I lived in Exeter for a couple of years.

I studied in Plymouth Polytechnic from Oct 1974 to June 1978. Part of the time, I lived in a sailing school in the Barbican, and I used to buy fish and chips from a shop just round the corner, yummy. Yes, I have some fond memories on the Barbican.

Excellent video! Thank you so much for the tour of this lovely city. The natural sounds are so much better narration than ego-driven drivel from presenters who are fascinated with the sounds of their own voice. The historical notes you left bring me to a time long before I was around. We will be in Plymouth for just several hours soon as a cruise ship we’ll be on will dock there. Looking forward to gin, a nautical-based bookstore I heard about, gin, the Mayflower departure point and gin.

Loved this video so much! I love Plymouth, we usually stay for a couple of nights on our way down to Cornwall, usually staying at the Premier Inn at Lockyer's Quay. We spend so much time in the Barbican (in the pubs!). On our last night we have a huge three course meal at the Village Restautant and book in for cocktails at The Refectory bar at the Plymouth gin distillery too. P.S. They do a lovely cheese salad in The Navy Inn! It's great washed down with a pint of Tribute.

Good morning Alison, I guess it’s the perfect stop off point for Cornwall. Thanks for your recommendation of the premier inn. The Barbican has a great atmosphere doesn’t it. I have a few walks here in Cornwall if that gets you in the mood for your next trip? all the best to you.

@@LivingWalks Yes, coming down from the Midlands, Plymouth is the perfect stopping off point on our journey to the far west of Cornwall. I highly recommend the Premier Inn at Lockyers Quay as it its located close to the aquarium and the Barbican. You can walk to the Barbican from the Premier Inn either via the Swing Bridge or take the longer route around Sutton Harbour. Thank you, I will check your Cornish walks out too!

Thank you very much for this. I lived in Plymouth from the age of one to 23/24 .... a long time ago.. 1947 -1970. A pity about the noisy cars and motorbikes driving in the barbican. Unpleasant for pedestrians....Where we could hear people talking I was pleased to hear Plymouth accents. Unfortunately, for anyone who doesn't know the city... this ( the barbican) is just a small un typical part of the city. Why not do a 'walk' in the 're-constructed ' major part of Plymouth? The barbican ( this video) was almost the only part that vicious, car mad Abercrombie didn't develop. OfAbercrombie' s post-war 'replanning' of Plymouth, Sir Simon Jenkins wrote: "Poor Plymouth. It was badly blitzed in the Second World War and then subjected to slash and burn by its city fathers. The modern visitor will find it a maze of concrete blocks, ill-sited towers and ruthless road schemes. Most of this damage was done by one man, Patrick Abercrombie, in the 1950s. The old Barbican district would, in France or Germany, have had its façades restored or rebuilt. Here new buildings were inserted with no feeling for the texture of the old lanes and alleys." In this video you don't show the principal 'replanned' centre of Plymouth. I see and hear that Abercrombie's vision of priority to the car lives on in the city., even on the barbican which he left 'relatively' un touched. You also mention South Devon AOB ( what remains is beautiful) .... but you don't mention that Plymouth has built over quite a lot of it.... PLymstock, Elburton, Brixton, Plympton, Wembury, Turnchapel. Sherford New Town anyone??
