Plywood Aquarium Pond Sealant vs Fiberglass?

Plywood aquarium pond sealant is super expensive. Maybe I can just do fiberglass resign. My only concern would be if the silicone will adhere to that and the glass pane. These huge plywood fish tanks are a lot of fun to build. I highly advise you monster fish keepers to do it.

Looks good. Have you thought about building a smaller box to test your theories out before applying it to your main project? if you wind up going with the epoxy you should try Aquaepoxy. its cheaper per gallon than pond amour and you can do custom colors if want....there's also a brand from Benjamin Moore called Corotech v400 that will work. I've used them both with solid results.

Palmer theres a product called fiberglass pigment that is (I think) designed to color fiberglass. I'm not an expert, but look up fiberglass pigment. It might be what you're looking for.

Wow, excellent work, looking forward to seeing the final result. Super Cool to have that much space to play around with. Would some kind of Ink be safe to mix with the resin, Indian ink maybe? Research needed, maybe try art & craft wholesalers. OR stain you fibre underlay matting black, then apply clear resin.

I'd just get pond armor if I'm honest with you. Yes it's more expensive but itll save you a ton more time. But it's your project, and I'll be happy to see what you go with!

dude, this is like a million dollar worth of built in 2022 lumber price. You must be a millionaire by now, just with the raw materials for your aquarium built. But yeah, you are right there aren't a lot of info on the fiber/epoxy. I am interested on waterproofing my backyard pond. I would like to have bigger "tank" and only place for me to do that is on my backyard. in 2022, cost of a living space for 3ftx6ft area would cost $1 or $2 million in San Francisco area.

Pond epoxy....it's way to big of a project to go cheap...use the best tool for the job and it will pay off in the end ...where will you be setting up the filter/sumps?.good luck!

Pond shield is very expensive. You should get Sigmashield 880, it’s used on off-shore oil rigs so is mass produced and much cheaper. I have used it fir years on aquarium and sumps

Look up Polyamide epoxy! You can get it in black, aquarium safe, and not only is it so much cheaper than Pond Shield, it wont eventually crack and leak because it has a slight rubbery texture

This is the last of two vids in Plywood playlist.. Resin and fiberglass needs to be learned from a Fiberglass plywood waterproofing video. Not on the actual tank.. There are resin companies showing how to waterproof plywood. Good luck, everyone! 🍀🍻🎈

Would it be ok to seal the edges with caulk before fiberglassing or is it even necessary? Does it have to be marine silicon caulk?

I think if that 19 foot long tank works out I’d drive out there from Milwaukee just to see the shop. That’s what, an 8 hour drive? Lol.

Don't want to sound negative, but will you really be able to put some monster fish in there when it's done? Only two foot front to back isn't much room for big guys to turn around in and if you fiberglass the pillars in middle, will they be able to swim through the entire 19 foot length? I definitely want to follow your build and I hope you prove me wrong, I've wanted to build myself a big plywood tank but don't have a space for it right now, and by watching yours and others builds I can see what works for when I can build one.

I would just buy the pond epoxy. It is going to most likely going to save you time and you know what you are getting going into it. The way I see it, by the time you research, test, spend time purchasing and mixing, you could be looking at hours of additional time. It sounds like cost if a major reason why you want to dye it yourself, so If you put a $ value at what you feel your time is worth, you can see exactly how much you are spending by doing it yourself.

I know from boat building that resin isn’t 100 percent waterproof. Overtime water will get through and your wood will rot

Use nail polish to dye the fiberglass. It's an enamel, fish safe and it hardens at roughly the same rate as fiberglass. Just test your ratios 1st. I'm not saying this will work. I do know you can use nail polish to color clear or casting resin. Same principle. Just a thought.

Fibre glass resin is not waterproof, if you do not cover it with epoxy you will have a disaster coming. Ask any boat builder.

Not often I'll have a go at someone on here but he is completely clueless about fibreglassing!! Don't copy what he's doing unless you want leaks and poisonous chemicals leaching into your tank.
