Enjoyed the explanation on the plywood situation. I was definitely one of those people who responded to Marc with "Yeah! Plywood sucks!" Had a 8-10 year ish hiatus from doing any serious woodworking and recently picked it back up after we bought a house. Plywood went in the crapper over that period.

Great podcast guys! Found you on Pandora. At first I thought Shannon was Jeremy Piven- sounded just like him to me 😂. Awesome chemistry and love your knowledge you guys share. Good stuff for a beginner like me. 😊

Where was Shannon's explanation of plywood supply & demand 3 weeks ago when I was discussing this in my economics class? I'm saving this video and my junk ply scraps to aid my econ class discussions in the future.

All I could understand… we will keep producing expensive low quality plywood… COME ON!!!!!! Anyone left capable in the industry? For how much longer we gonna suck?

I wonder what will happen with plywood, if the demand drops because of macro economics. Will the quality go up at the same price point?

Plywood at top dollar is poor quality. The outer veneer layer is thinner than ever. The other issue is the product overall thickness is less. Three quarters of plywood is now 11/16. I am expecting at least 23/32. Coved is an excuse for poor quality.

MDF will be far superior in terms of flatness and thickness consistency over Plywood, BUT it does suck to work with. The rip-it fence has existed for a while in higher end sliding table saws

That felt like a very "out of touch" perspective on plywood cost vs quality. As a consumer, based on what we were able to buy pre-2020, the quality HAS gone down and the price HAS gone up. If the argument is that 'we're just not willing to pay the price for GOOD plywood', that doesnt hold up against what we were able to buy pre-2020. So it just felt like a lot of over the top explanation of the macro economics of plywood and ignoring the actual issues. Plywood costs have gone up because they can charge more without increasing quality because of demand. There i said it Shannon.

Agree. So many things including glue refills and quality control can be automated these days. It feels like manufacturers are not motivated at all. Constantly looking for excuses. Meanwhile, we bought two billion worth of russian birch… Somebody better put their head in the right position.

@48.25 pounds per square inch is not a unit of force; just sayin'. (sorry, it triggered memories of really bad online clamp reviews).

Force per unit area is pressure, but psi or kPa pretty common to indicate how much oomph there is.
@barryomahony4983
@barryomahony4983 Жыл бұрын
@@jeffbaker8808 Only by people who don't know what they're talking about; e.g., a Bessey K-body is rated at up to 1700 lbs. of force. If clamping two quarter inch pieces together, that would be 27,000 psi of pressure. Or, if it was edge clamping two 3/4" thick 1 foot boards together, it would be 189 psi of pressure. No clamp manufacturer rates their products in psi because it's not a unit of force, and it varies wildly depending on what you're clamping.

I love pointing out a rambler or someone who is hogging the talking stick, but I strongly disagree with you. Shannon is the industry expert of the three guys on this topic. He spoke in a very informative way. That's all.
