Very surprised that this lathe isn't set up with this. It looks like a change they should consider in my opinion. You should contact Matt at PM and request he watch your video so he could possibly get in touch with the supplier and request these machines to have this as a standard item. Your video was well done and you are correct in the ease of the modification but it really should come this way. Nice work and the camera person did well also

My 50 year old Myford ML7 has a lever for these gears with a pull knob lock. I've only used it to enter neutral for slow feeding via the leadscrew handwheel.

@@snaplash Hi Thank you for your interest and thank you for your support. I use the power feed a lot , it gives me a nice smooth cut. I often use it in both directions, that’s why I find the handle a real handy improvement on this lathe. Thanks again.Joe

I've got the same lathe, and will keep this mod in mind for the future.

Hi, It’s a easy modification and a time saver if you do a lot of lathe work. I can’t imagine why it wasn’t already there. Thank you for your comment. Joe

Nice mod Joseph. I'm really surprised you didn't do the drilling in the mill. That's one piece I'd have been really worried about messing up, but it turned out fine. 👍😁

Hi Denny, I use the Drill Press because it’s easier to set up. It’s a great machine that I got from my grandfather. I think it was made in the 1930s. Also Unlike the operator it never screws up. Joe

That’s a great improvement, my Clausing lathe already has front controls but if it didn’t I would definitely do what you just did. Really enjoy your channel and content, thank you for sharing.

Joe thanks for sharing, I'll be doing this mod to my PM1228, could you do a quick video explaining your tailstock mods a little more ?

Thank you for your interest and your comments Thomas, we are planning to do a video on the tail stock next . Then the cross slide reduction gear. Joe

Just a thought you could place your dye in your lathe chuck and you rod in the tail stack and power thread your piece. Just saying.

Thanks for the video. Just made this mod to my 1228. Would love to share photos with you. Just posted a short on my channel showing the mod.

Also make sure you write down the email address and type it in. It doesn’t work if you copy and paste.

I enjoy your work and instruction. I too have the same lathe and am still learning. What tool did you use when drilling the three indents. It appears that they are rounded off? Thanks again.
@JoesModelEngines Жыл бұрын
I’m sorry I didn’t see this email before, I used a ball end mill to finish the hole. You mentioned a countersink, I’ve used that also on other projects but it doesn’t seem to lock in as well. Joe
@georgespeake5089 Жыл бұрын
So, I looked again at the video and it appears you countersunk a drilled hole.
@JoesModelEngines Жыл бұрын
Hi George ,, Im sorry but I don’t know exactly what you are referring to. The detents were done by drilling a small shallow hole, then using a ball end-mill to finish.

The Chinese manufacturers should just sell their lathes as a parts kit you assemble yourself since they wind up being torn down and reassembled anyway. It would make the lathe even cheaper by cutting on their labor costs and their shipping costs since the parts can be packed in more tightly.
@JoesModelEngines Жыл бұрын
Hi Bob , That is a good idea , but first they would have to have some help learning how to write a good assembly manual. 🙀
@bobweiram6321 Жыл бұрын
@@JoesModelEngines I love their manuals, it's great industrial humor! Have you ever read some of their packaging and immediately collapsed into belly aching laughter? A few years back, a KZbinr was unboxing a package delivered from China that read "Share friends. Make good fun and smile. Enjoy lucky life..." His face lit up with glee as he frantically started tearing into the box and yelled, "Fuck yeah! Party in a box!" When he finally got to the contents his excitement suddenly waned into disappointment. He gave a sigh and muttered, "Oh... It's the drill press table I ordered." I laughed so hard. Poor guy thought he inadvertently received someone else's drug shipment.

Thanks for the very informative video Joe. That modification was one of the first things I had planned to do back when I got my PM1228 back in 2017. I still haven't gotten around to it, but this video may inspire me to get it done. 😉 Here's a link to my comments on the leadscrew reverse lever in my originnal review: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqK5k2aBrNN5rZo

@@JoesModelEngines I had the date wrong: I got mine in 2017. Senior brain deterioration. I corrected it in my comment above. I've been really happy with the lathe and have had very few problems with it. Like you, I use it nearly every day.
