Why you converts get offended if the PM tells that Sunday is a Christian holiday? Everyone knows Sunday as a holiday was started by the British when India was their colony. Do you know the Congress party even used to present the budget at 5 pm IST when the LSE opens for trading. Congress did not change anything left behind by the British. Unlike Christians, which is a day for Sunday mass/prayers, Sunday religious classes etc for the Christians, it does not have any religious significance for any other communities. Why Sunday has a holiday? The Roman Emperor Constantine made Sunday a public day of rest in 321 BCE. This contradicts the Christian and Jewish tradition that Saturday is a sabbath, or rest day. Regardless of whether it is viewed as the first or last day of the week, Sunday was named after the Sun god Solis. Its Anglo-Saxon name is Sonnandæg. Why? Because convention, economics, business etc. There is no economic utility in shifting holidays to other days of the week because unlike monotheist religions - the concept of weekly off isnt traditionally how Hindus or native religious people took holidays. Traditionally it was seasonal holidays or based on the tithi, Poornima was usually celebrated or considered auspicious. But the fact is undeniable - Sundays became the weekly holiday due to their religious significance to Christians, just as Friday is for Muslims or Saturday for Jews.

But there are various harassments meted out non attendees as the christian priests interfere in their matrimonial alliances, as they refuse to perform wedding rituals, refusing to buy the dead etc and they allow these religious functions only after apologising and paying penalties. Yes, Christians in Gulf countries attend mass on Fridays, but if India declares weekend on a day which is important to the majority community, you guys will create a furore.
