***IMPORTANT NOTE PLEASE READ: Based on the early comments, there seems to be some confusion regarding Rule #2. Rule #2 applies to anytime you are doing activities in the field where you would normally be wearing a knife. Completely separate from Rule #1.****
Prepping for survival emergencies doesn't have to be hard....if you mix prepping with survival planning. In this first video in a series, I give my three simple rules for being ready to make a fire when you need to. Follow these and you'll be golden while you work on building further skills.
This video is not intended to be the end-all, substitute skills training or anything else, it is intended to demonstrate how easy it is to prepare for a crucial survival task that might just save your life. It's a simple starting point for beginners.

The unintended lesson this vid offers is the use of good tin foil. And the fact that you did not edit the repeated failures of the crappy foil talks volumes about your honest approach in these vids.

KZbin video rule for you Chris: Rule #1... Viewers will not listen intently to every word, rule or explanation you provide so don't sweat the comments! This is a public forum that most watch on the fly for fun, not a testable classroom situation. Having said that, I love survival gear discussions as I pick up lots of tidbits to tweak my own kits... Thanks!

For anyone watching on a device that doesn't display annotations and that doesn't read the description: Rule #1 is an EDC rule. Rule #2 applies to whenever you'd normally have your knife in the field. Seems to be some confusion.

Sounds like my earlier comment struck a cord, sorry, it's just watching the video and how you said that it was an edc rule made me go ehh, but now that you cleared that up, I 100% agree, redundancy is key to survival, it's a great tip that I have already implemented, so now my bags aren't my only way to start fire, I knew I needed to carry a method of fire on my person, but other than a lighter it never seemed practical, now, I use both a keychain and knife setup.

Good points Chris. Most people think too much and make things complicated when it comes to these things. I understand primitive methods, but I think they're important more for long term after you used up all your resources. If I need a fire, the first thing I use is a lighter, my zippo. I usually have a ferro rod, two lighters, and a bag stuffed with dryer lint. Keeping some dry wood on hand is helpful depending on your location and conditions.

Not bad. I use three old methods, malt straw stuffed with vasoline cotton ball. I cut these in two inch joints and heat sealed the ends. Also works as a candle. The second one is dipped a piece fat wood in molten sulfur. I wish some one would made these again, my last supplier went out of business ten years ago. I can make these myself, but I'm getting too old. Third one is a type of pine pitch stick, you shave a little pile of it and put a spark to it, not wood. but pitch. I still have one stick left. I like your modern methods, a lot easier. Good video.

I agree. I suggest basing a survival kit around a small fixed blade knife, such as ESEE Izula or CRKT Folts minimalist because realistically those are the only fixed blades you will have on you every day

Okay, rule number one out here: Always... no, Never go out in a blizzard. That kit on your key chain would turn off my GM vehicle, cause me to crash into a building, causing a nuclear detonation, destroying the know universe. Actually, I used to glob stuff together like that when I was a kid. Nice to grown men (not just you) doing it in this day an age. Like your videos.

On my keys I carry my Aurora Fire Starter 2SA and some tinder, which I carry around 150% of the time. on my knife I did it a little different, I had a kydex sheath made with room for a vulcan fire piston and a altoids tin stuffed with charcloth. this guarantees about a 80 fires at least. and charcloth is really easy to make. In a hurry I will use my ferro rod and tinderquick, but if i have 5 minutes then i will use the piston so i can save the tinderquick for emergency situations.

I'm spending all my free time in the woods so I know how essential is to start a fire when your hands are really cold and there is nothing dry to burn. I tried everything starting from few types of flints, storm matches, waterproof lighters and so one. The result is the regular lighter is my absolutely number one. It is waterproof (you need to shake it when it's wet for a few seconds) and it creates regular flame, not a spark. With a piezo egnition it is extremely durable. I'm carrying the piezo lighter in almost every pocket so starting fire when it's essential takes just a few seconds. And there's always a backup. I'm not a "scout" and I'm not trying to make my life harder just for fun. Using a flint looks interesting but in critical conditions relaying on it could be really dangerous and your responsibility is to worn your followers. Without your sealed cotton balls your flint is useless in bad weather conditions... That's why I use only something that really works.

I plan to change it out soon. I never plan to carry my woods survival gear to the movies or grocery shopping, that is just not logical. but being prepared is the logical thing to do. thanks again for the excellent video.

First off let me say that I have fallen in love with your channel, I personally agree with 99% of what you say. This video has part of what I mean. My knife of choice is the smith and wesson search&rescue. Cheap, easy, dependable. Now walking around with this thing has gotten me in some very minor trouble (store clerks saying to remove it or deal with cops, etc.) so yes, edc fire on keys is great, but edc the knife, and mini fire kit, not so great. That being said, I also live in a very... Finicky area, where most people aren't woods people, so in the countryside, I could see this working better. Keep up the great work!

Great video I have always gone by similar rules. I'm glad your making this series a lot of people (myself included) can get caught up in the latest gear craze and learning every skill that they forget to keep things simple. Any chance you would do a video on a personal survival kit or pocket survival kit? Kind of a last ditch, it's all you have kit. Would be curious to see what you have or what you could come up with.

Since some people want to make it seem that I and some other commentors are dumb or don't listen, I will explain my comment. This is not for Chris and I'm not trying to offend him or razz him in any way. I have watched the video 3 times now in case I missed him saying something. 1. Since rule number 1 is an EDC rule someone could assume that rule number 2 is as well especially. Since in the first part of the video before the rules he says that usually things go wrong when you are not prepared more then when you are (I'm simplifying his comment). 2. In the 3 times of watching the video, in rule number 2 he says "when you are going out somewhere" Henry never said in the video when you are going out in the woods. I listened 3 times and never heard in the woods. and if you listened and put together that things go wrong when you are not prepared and the fact that rule 1 is EDC and his 100 percent of the time you would think that you Should have your knife on you all the time or EDC YOUR PRIMARY KNIFE so you are prepared if things go wrong. We are not dumb and if anything we listened to closely.

There's some good advice here, and I absolutely agree about primitive fire. The bow drill, hand drill, fire saw, etc... are methods you use when you're camping and want to practice your skills. If you have to resort to using one of those primitive methods to start a fire in a real survival situation you did something really, really stupid! Carry a lighter or three!!!

Great video,only problem I have with rule number 2 is you cannot always have your primary survival knife on you when you leave the house. My knife is the BK7 and its not exactly a small knife that wont attractive attention while I'm walking around town or in stores. You will get stopped alot. And most people or places wont give a damn why you have it. Anyway, good video again and keep them comming
@preparedmind101

I did not say when you leave the house for rule #2. I said when you actually go out to do something in the field like when you normally would strap on a knife. Damnit. That obviously wasn't clear enough if I've answered this three times already. Annotation time.

Chris, great vid, as always. This may be a stupid question, but I need to ask it anyway.... Why you NEED to attach the fire starters to the sheath? Example: Your setup #2. Why you NEED to attach the Maxpedition pouch to the knife sheath? You can easily wear the knife sheath AND the pouch attached to your belt. Why is better your way? Pls, dont get me wrong. Love your videos and I think you are doing a GREAT job, but this one confuses me a little. Take care and keep it up, man.

Chris, one piece is missing. I understand rule 1 and I understand that rule 2 is when you are in the field (outdoors), but what about other EDC or prepper gear to have when you have to go to normal places like out to eat, work (depending on work rules) or on city streets? Since you have rule one, perhaps rule 2 could have had two options, field and non-field? Like for non-field, a pocket folder and perhaps a pocket-able flashlight. Just a thought, offer options?
@XMetalChefX

If I have the Gerber strongarm (didn't have the dough for a bk7 and then money for a custom sheath) Would you recommend using a maxpedition pouch to keep a fire kit on? Or is there a good method to get accessories on a sheath like maybe leather loops and epoxy? Might be a cool idea to do a video where you show some "hacks" for stock sheath. Thank you ever so much for all of your hard work Chris!

as long as youre not naked when you leave the house, you always have tinder lol..and the idea of carrying a fixed blade knife everywhere.... im gonna be honest, i carry enough shit... firearm, spare magazines, flashlight, folding knife, keys, multi tool, lighter, wallet, cell phone...yeah, adding a fixed blade just isnt happening for EDC.
@preparedmind101
@preparedmind101 10 жыл бұрын
I didn't say that was for EDC. The car keys are for EDC. The fixed blade kit is when you actually go do something where you would normally carry one, like in the woods. Since the fixed blade is the single most important piece of field gear that should be attached to your body, a fire kit should be attached to that.

Dude, please... If you need the instant fire, use the simplest lighter!! You may have few of them with you and they cost nothing! Using a flint is one of the stupiest thing you can do in a survival situation. I know it may make you feel like a pro with that, but if you ask pros, like soldiers fighting in Afghanistan or Iraqi they will tell you they use ONLY lighters!!
@preparedmind101
@preparedmind101 8 жыл бұрын
+Bartosz Bodnar So using something the works in any weather with no moving parts and can potentially light thousands of fires is "stupid" compared to something with multiple moving parts and a finite fuel supply. Yeah ok. Nobody said don't carry a lighter. I EDC one. And soldiers fighting in Afghanistan are survival fire experts? You need to get off the internet and into the woods before offering advice again. The only way a ferro rod fails is if you lose it.

I disagree. "Survival just doesn't happen when you go into the woods." Of the 58 cases covered on *I Shouldn't Be Alive*, you'd be hard pressed to identify one that doesn't involve the person or party traveling through, playing in, or flying over wilderness or at least fairly remote areas. I include the sea as a wilderness area. They might not have expected it, but anyone with just a bit of interest in survival would have known they were going to be doing something that made survival a much more likely prospect than taking the family out for dinner at the Outback. I only carry my kit when I go near wilderness or drive through remote areas. (This includes driving on well-traveled highways through remote areas.) I just don't get why so many of you want to carry so much gear on you everyday for situations that are about as likely as the zombie apocalypse. I'm annoyed by a pocket full of change. To each his own, I suppose, but the motto, "If you're not always prepared, you're never prepared", is just plainly false.
