I like what you're saying because I'm in norcal and I was preparing for earthquakes at first then found youtube videos for preppers and survivalists and started building on all my bags and packs with the 5/10Cs for my family. Then it went to food prep. Then DIY project stoves. During the lockdown, I got my dirt time in my backyard.

Another great video Chris. None of us are so advanced that we can't use a little reminder of the basics from time to time. And I agree about Dave. Of course his principles aren't original, they've been used for thousands of years. He just does an excellent job of presenting them in an interesting, memorable way. And I think he has done more to generate interest in bushcraft/woodcraft/survival skills or whatever you want to call it than anyone else alive today, IMHO. But you're not far behind ;-)

I would offer that Chris, Mantis, and that guy down in Georgia - the scoutmaster dude, what is his name? You know, the one who's always throwing tomahawks and knives - follow those 3 and you'll do well - just messing with you Bryan
@StevanOutdoor6 жыл бұрын
+Survival On Purpose. Of course it's not original. Making them all start with a C is stretching it actually. I also don't agree about the generation of interest in bushcraft part than anyone alive. As far as I know Les Hiddins (The Bushtucker Man) is still alive. Mors Kochanski is. Ray Mears is. Maybe Dave generated more interest in the bushcraft in the USA. That could be true. I just hope he would have brought more interest in the environment. I think the film industry picked up on this interest and then started to make shows with people like Dave Canterbury and Bear Grylls. Dave Canterbury is doing a lot of hunting in his video's where that's actually illegal to do in most countries. In a bushcraft or woodcraft setting anyway. He made videos about the 6 specifics a survival knife must have and throw them out the window when Mora hired him. I do think he attracted a lot of people doing stuff in nature they should not do and in parts of Sweden now even the 'all mens right' is a topic of discussion. Some parts are planning on putting more restrictions on that. I don't like Dave Canterbury and I would agree that he's a smart business man. On Dual Survival it was all about his military background and the military way but when Discovery found out he lied and fired him he went low profile for a bit and returned as a hippy. Discovery and Dave Canterbury are more into making money than teaching bushcraft and survival skills. A lot like Bear Grylls btw.

I enjoyed your video. I also have the same condor bag you showed. I have added a small pouch to one of the sides with mollie. I have changed my 32oz bottle with the 40oz bottle. The condor will accept the 40oz real well. Now in my case, I place the lid at the bottom instead of on top like you showed. Now my cordage is now my strap. I used 100' crocheted 11 strand paracord. You talked about Canada. I'm from a small town in Tok Ak. A little cooler than Canada.

The hanger/spreader, can be bought at any sporting goods store, that has a good fishing department. The item is normally used to hold open the mouth of a fish so you can remove the hook, and costs about two dollars. Glad you like the Condor H2O pouch I have two of them, very good pouches for the money.

I don't really understand people who hate on Dave for his ideas. I think they're the best ideas, though it may not be original. He presents them them the best. (My opinion, of course) He also got my other family members interested because of how he comes across on his videos, which no one else has been able to do.

I lived in MI for many years. Tons and tons of snow! But now Im in Nebraska, we dont get as much snow but we have wind! Couple years ago in February, it was 18° , with a 55 MPH wind gusts. It was about -45 below. Very cold. When I drove forklift in that weather, the wind would blow up my mask and give me brain freeze! Also when it snows with the winds, total white out! Many people get stranded, and they die cuz hypothermia or they try walking. Having a 5c's kit is a must!!

Great video! It's always good to refresh on the fundamentals, and talk about new equipment and "best practices" to fill the roles. This is probably the best concise video on the topic I've seen. A year ago, if you had asked me if I was a "prepper", I'd have said no. Preppers were those extremists on shows like that doomsday preppers show where people hoarded ridiculously massive supply stockpiles of things that would go to waste far before they'd actually get used, etc. Then I started watching guys like you on KZbin, and realized that they're fairly normal people; and that I had been a prepper for more than a decade at least, and just never knew it. Still learning some of the terminology, but almost all of it is similar principles I learned elsewhere, just with different nuances and different equipment. Keep up the good work!

I keep my pathfinder bottle kit in my Kodak gearslinger at all times and I use a similar layout with a knife straped on one side with my medical kit on the other. Dave made fine plastic shavings by using the spine of his bushcraft blade against the body of the bic and added fine, highly combustible dust from the flint(ferro) by slowing turning the striking wheel without creating a spark. He then dumped the dust into the shavings pile and then sparked the lighter to ignite it.
@thndrpnts10 жыл бұрын
You can make use of all that MOLLE real estate, too. The Condor double pistol mag pouches make great areas to store a multitool, fire steel and tinder, large folding knife, or whatever, freeing up that stitched-on pouch for something like a Sawyer water filter and a 1 liter Sawyer water bag (which is what I do). I really love that pouch. It's a great platform for making a kit.

Nice vid Chris. I'm glad you added the importance of training/practicing the applications of each of the five C's. We practice applying the bushcraft equivalent to each as well incase something was to happen to any or all of our carried in C's. We got on location a few weeks ago and I opened up my envelope. It read "Cutting Tool". I almost fell over. So down to the river I went to start shattering and scrape sharpening river rock. Doug lost "Combustion Device" and Gary lost "SS Container" Gary got it the worst, I think. Burning out bowls and heating rocks had him a bit hard to talk to. This fall we are stepping up to losing two at a time. God help us.

Chris great video. Not trying to step on your toes but I'd like to bring to your attention something a little different that might have a place in your world. All those bottle carriers are usually 10"x 4". Maxpedition also makes a 12"x 5". This carrier has a nice pouch with interior organization. You can fit a 64 oz Klean Kanteen with a GSI cup upside down on top of the bottle. Or you can use the 40 oz, in which case the bottle will fit in the cup at the bottom. Or you could use a smaller bottle and have some extra room for energy bars or something. Maybe you could get some kind of a stove in there too like that little one you have that folds up real small. Chris, another great video! You should get some of the new 550 Firecord once it really becomes available. I think it's still shipping to Kickstarter backers only. I got mine the other day and have been playing with it a bit. It's not going to replace Mini-Infernos, Live Fire, Wet Fire, etc... or even regular paracord anytime soon, but I'll be replacing all of my boot laces, zipper pulls, lanyards & other other such paracord items with it right away! It is noticeably thicker than standard 550 cord, but that's due to it having a 3-ply firestarter strand in addition to the standard seven strands inside the outer sheath. Check it out...if you haven't already!

Some food for thought. I just saw a video where the guy put an open bandana over the open top of the case. Then he pushed the cup down then the bottle. The bandana sticks out all around the bottle. That way you just open the top of the bag and pull up on the bandana and the cup and bottle come out eady. Plus, you'll have a bandana which always comes in handy.

Simple trick for getting the cup out of the bottle bag -- put your hand inside, make a fist and pull up. Much easier than trying to get fat fingers (like mine) around the outside and wriggle it up. Also, you can put the cup lid on the bottom (remember to put the d-ring handle facing up), then the stove base, then the cup then the bottle, and you'll have room for a trangia alcohol stove on top.

The Maxpedition 5x12 bottle carrier works the best, even though it is a little stiff. The 5x12 gives you a little more space, and it's no where near as tight like the 4x10. And, the Maxpedition thickness also serves as an insulator/cooler. But, Maxpedition doesn't offer a large variety of colors like Condor does. Good video.

Great video Chris, I have the same kit as you know. Went for the Condor Multicam but loving that ATACS camo :D Try making a fist inside the cup then clench. I found this the easiest way to get the damn thing out, it's pretty tight in there isn't it. Great kit for both those starting out and also for someone who wants a small kit. Mine lives in the car now. To others, just remember to fill the bottle with water so you at least have something to start with :p Makes it just under a kilo heavier but it fresh water and worth the extra weight.
