The junction is clearly protected by a set of catch points, so anything passing the signal at red is meant to be derailed. The cause is simple. SPAD. Signal passed at danger. Nothing malfunctioned except the driver's judgement.
@madmax20076911 жыл бұрын
Looks very much like trapping protection doing exactly what it was designed to do. Failing safe and dropping the loco away from the running line. It scares the willies out of me that NR have removed trapping protection wholesale as "too expensive" to justify or "unnecessary", esp. where bi-di running lines are involved and much higher speeds with higher risk of head-on collisions in the even of system failure. This highlights the value of trap points (note: not catch points)

This wasn't a mechanical failure, this was operator error. The engineer ran over a "derail". A "derail" is a device designed to put a train on the ground. It is important to protect the main-line, parts of the yard where people are working, or rail where locomotives or passenger equipment is standing. Operationally, it is usually better to put a train on the ground, than to have it enter the main without authority or protection.

look like it was derailed by the catch point? if thats the right word? the point that stops trains entering line before points and derails them?
@clangaman281011 жыл бұрын
As the description said it was a points failure, it didn't happen on the main points, the trap-points were to blame, maybe the mechanism was faulty and the vibration of the approaching engine set the bastard off.

Driver error and signalman at fault so i'm told, as the driver went through a catch point. No issue with the fire burning out though the tender was drained for the re railing process, and coal remained in tender as well. Regards, Liam

Cause? Was the fire in the locomotive burning out as this was videoed? Tender water drained to reduce weight? Did they remove the coal before rerailing efforts? Thank you.

If you actually read the description in that video it states that both the driver and fireman and guard had been over to the signalman before the movement began. so i wouldn't be so sure. anyways, wait until any report is published.

I heard they were given clearance to pass the signal at danger because the signal box was not manned. But still neither the driver or fireman actually looked to see the points which is not only crucial with any locomotive at any time, but critically crucial when passing at danger

I feel sorry for the Driver. What happened to him ? Passing a signal at Danger (SPAD) even on a Private Railway like this has to be administered as if it were on Network Rail, - and the Driver suspended. A full enquiry has to take place from the national Railway Inspectorate.

If you visit the RAIB website, this would possibly fall into their scope of investigation. However, if an initial investigation cites human error as the sole cause it's unlikely they would become involved. Whilst some may not like the RAIB for whatever reason, its thanks to them & authorities like them our railways are one of the safest in the world.

No track failures or theories needed there. The train went through an open catch point. The question is why was approval granted to pass the signal at danger and did anyone inspect the points?

Not necessarily, as it isn't a passenger train and it is not on the mainline. Most likely the ORR may be involved.

Any communication from the box - eg authorisation to pass signal at danger would have been done verbally either face to face or via telephone prior to the loco starting to move/filming began. However, both the signalman AND the footplate crew are accountable IF this is the case as the route should be set prior to authiorisation being given and then checked prior to making the move.

From other filmed footage it remains perfectly obvious that this was SPAD. There are no signals from signal box and driver/fireman looks out of cab twice during incident. If signal at danger, catch points will do the job for which they are installed!!!!!!
@roberthodson372611 жыл бұрын
The signal was clearly at danger; the points were set against the movement of the mail stock, no flag was seen as shown by the signalman so were do we go from there.
@johnlmac195611 жыл бұрын
This is definitely driver error, the loco has gone through a "Catch Point" against a "Home" signal that clearly is set to "STOP". The idea of the point is to protect the main line as is the case here.
