Thanks Tim, you make tying simple patterns simple. I think Einstein once said it's easy to make things hard but hard to make things simple. I'm going to try this technique on my BWOs and rusty spinners!

The EP fibers are also more durable than hairs ear. I’ve had success using a shuck for tail, making it more of sparkle dun. The usual is the last fly I tie on as darkness approaches.

Gee, I going to have to get some of that, Sulfurs are still coming off on the West Branch of the Farmington #18. Black Caddis are about as well. We got rain today, we sure need it.

Great tutorial Tim, excellent techniques. The Usual is one of my favorites. I love pulling the Usual under the surface in fast water like Betters suggested. Have you tried Trigger Point on other flies like Rosenbauer's Rabbit's Foot Emerger instead of the snowshoe? Thanks Tim.
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't Joe, but as good snowshoe is getting harder and harder to find, I will. This pattern is in fact a result of that. I received a batch of snowshoe feet from a friend, that despite all sorts of precautions got buggy and had to be thrown out along with most of my other snowshoe as well, big time bummer, but it happens. So with this Usual, I just subbed in EP TPFs and it worked, I can't believe I'm going to say this, but even better than the original. P.S. Why don't we keep the pulling the fly under trick just between us.

Tim I have been thinking of using this material to tie a modified version of a stimulator. Using EP fibers for tail and wing of the fly. Do you think it would offer an advantage over the traditional tail and wing materials? Thanks for another great video!🙏👍

I use snowshoe for compara dun wings up through 16. 12 and 14 I use deer hair. Above that I use hackle for the drakes. This stuff looks dy-no-mite. A lot easier to work with than snowshoe,

Can I replace EP fibers with Tiemco Aero Dry wing?
@TheTCogo

I actually call this an EP (or Z-lon depending on what I am using) sparkle dun due to the fan wing. But that's just me. Usuals are more of an emerger pattern for me, like an RS2. I use these for duns and spinners exclusively.
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 2 жыл бұрын
Understood. I did have a tough time trying to title this video. It really could be called a Comparadun, a Sparkle Dun, a Haystack, a Usual or whatever Mr. Betts called his pattern that used Z-lon instead of EP TPF. It also took everything in my power to label it a PMD rather than a Sulphur. I'm East Coast.

@@tightlinevideo we get hung up on so much as tyers, always worrying about the smallest things. But I'm gonna try out that furled wing. I usually tie a loop then cut the top,. The furl seems like it would be easier to manage. Great stuff.

Lots of EP waste there. Do you have equity in the company? Nice pattern! Reminds me of the old comparaduns!
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 2 жыл бұрын
Personally I don't believe there is a lot of waste here and no I don't have equity in the company. I am however always concerned about wasting materials especially those as expensive as EP Trigger Point Fibers. There is always a balance between pattern effectiveness, speed of tying, material usage/cost and consistency between flies. Thomas, if you have a method for tying this pattern that covers these and results in less waste of EP TPFs, I'm all ears, please share.

naw- he's pretty efficient. If you want to see fly tying by an equity owner, look at EP's actual tying videos. Flies 100% made of EP fibers with TONS of waste. These are expensive materials!
@bowhuntznj
@bowhuntznj 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve been watching Tim’s videos for years and he is never wasteful in his tying methods. He often tells people to save the excess or clipped off portion between a post it notepad to use later. Even Enrico himself tells people to save the excess or trimmed off portion to use later as well. If as flytiers there was no waste why do they sell all those catchalls, little waste baskets, and even a tying apron with a pocket to catch all the trimmings?

Sorry there isn't a sarcasm button online. Ive been a huge fsn of Tim's sine the early days. Your stuff is always informative and I love your tips for using materials that are "enough for multiple flies" Was really just making a joke. My apologies if ive offended anyone!

I love this method of tying the post and it works great for parachute flies, but when you spread it out comparadun style it tends to set the wing at a slight angle. It's hard to see this in the video and is probably no big deal, it just sort of bugs me.
