Your video was a God sent. I have been working with staffing agencies for 4 years full-time doing administrative/clerical tasks. Before listening to your video, I was worried that I have been wasting time and not taking my career-path serious. Temping has connected me with large and small organizations and given me the opportunities to work with experienced and smart people. The assignments given to me by the staffing agencies were about the same. The projects were very large, neglected, and time consuming -but were important to the client's long-term success. Many of these projects were considered by many as boring and repetitive. The experience I gained from past temp assignments helped me to successfully complete other projects and to think like a Project Manager . I am now interested in learning more about Project Management and getting a CAPM certification. Your video was on point.

I am trying to return to the field after having been out for (too) many years. Not easy. I went your route and started in a small center-like place and -- got hit by covid. Now I am trying again, -as you mentioned- either to get into a PMO or another smaller company where I can make myself useful. I love project management, love the entire process of helping people deal with the change. I had great teachers, one like you: self-starter who went into IT with zero degrees and made it there to become a great personable PM and mentor. I so hope, things will work out soon. I work in analytical chemistry. My background has been mostly material science and now recently supervising a lab in the wine industry. I sold laboratory physical sample preparation equipment; Things like precision saws, polishers, automated mills, as well as hardness testers and microscopes. I was actually really good at it but had no life traveling 75% across 6 states. No regrets, just wanting to now put myself into a position where I can love what I do and have a personal life.

Awesome! PMs come from diverse backgrounds. The best PMs have technical knowledge AND people skills. It's not a job for everyone. I would imagine that you honed your people skills as a salesperson, which is great. I'm going to be honest and say that for a very long time, I was not very good at maintaining a work-life balance. That is a skill I'm working on now. So a shift to PM isn't necessarily a guarantee that you'll get your life back. But, perhaps, achieving that balance is something we can explore together. I plan to focus on balance a lot this year in my content.

I cleared it last month, and my advice would be don't take much time for preparation, I mean months and months. I just read and watched videos for 2-3 weeks. I understand everyone takes different amount of preparation but once you get the main idea about CAPM or rather project management, it's not that hard. Spending a year for it will only make you more tensed and lower your confidence.

Option B - large company. As you said, there's so much knowledge one can get by working with really experienced people. I've started my career as a worksite manager assistant right after college in a multinational company and I see the difference between my behaviour and some of my fellow colleagues that got into smaller/fresher companies. The work environment is usually tougher in large companies, but doesn't that endure you? Anyways, great video, thanks for sharing!

Very great to know all of this as I work at a large company and did an interview for a Launch Manager but did not get it as I did not have a list of projects I had done as I have been in a job for the last eight years that is phone support. I am studying to get my PMP by June of 2020. I feel the positions mentioned today will help me as would a smaller company to progress. Project Admin, Project Analyst, or Project Control Officer sounds like a good first step. Thanks for this advice. It is very valuable.

Hi Jason, I'm really encouraged by listening to the story of your career change. I feel like I'm in similar situation as you've been working for a temp agency after losing a well-paid job. For some time I was trying to understand what professional path to choose based on my strengths and what I really enjoy doing. I'm working for a national retail company in the UK and even before getting my current junior manager position in logistics I was drawn to every project dealing with making changes and improving things. I'm extremely passionate about making a difference in that company and bringing to the table my experience and unique perspective. Until watching your first video I wasn't sure if PM would be a good framework to put myself in. After listening to the qualities you believe are essential for the PM role I've decided to do my best to get into that position eventually. If anyone is looking to get in to project management space, most of the bigger organization is adopting agile methodologies these days and lot of smaller or medium size companies does agile very well due to small size and co-located team. So I would add that the third option is to understand agile and start applying for scrum master opportunities.

I am open to both of these entry paths. I've worked at a small company that was open to growth but unfortunately it shut down. Now I work at a large company and I studied for my CAPM through them and am being re-reimbursed for my test. I am applying for project management roles now because the role I am in is a lower role that I took to get in with the company.

Another insightful video, Jason. I've worked for a large fortune 100 company for a very long time. I see the benefits of having that structure and ability to take on many mentors. However, I would absolutely LOVE to work for a smaller start-up where there is a "family" atmosphere. Being able to work directly with owners and upper management, and perhaps making direct impact in the business is incredibly beneficial. I could go either way, but option A may be my next step.

Started as a PM in a small company..now working in a bigger corporation in mid Europe, I DEFINATELLY recommend the first option (If you are that lucky). The experience you get in a small company is indispensable.. However, it might be more dificult, to switch in between large and small companies.. you can always go: 1. PM in small company, 2. PM junior in lager company and then get promoted to senior. (Funny fact.. mid senior PMs in central europe.. (around 30K - 40 K...).. really senior ones.. around 50K ... )

I think the first option of getting your self into a small organization and drive your carrier the way you want.. it can be stressful initially but you will learn a lot.. because all off the thing to be managed.. they will have to be managed by you only.. 👍

Go for second master degree from any of university in USA ,(you need to write GRE, TOEFL etc). After degree from USA you will have 3 years of OPT, that is enough for you to find decent job. 3. Marry an US citizen , move to USA on spouse visa.

something I see too often is the inverse opposite issue with project management, myself and other leaders become tasked with a responsibility, something recurring annually, maybe a huge event, something with a sizeable budget, predictable but different each time, we don't have the skills for project management as much as we have coping skills and learning from our mistakes - we seek out someone to promote from within, and no one ever wants to step up or down or sideways into project management - it's like at every company I've ever worked for everyone avoids it like the plague and people get 'stuck' with the title. I envy those that WANT the title, where are you, people?! How should a company turn such a need into a hireable position from outside - when they always want to promote from within but no one is willing, and those that do interview seem reticent to do something they're unfamiliar with without a long training. I come looking for insights in finding the right kind of people to hire who won't wait around for parameters to follow from previous projects but think creatively and research their asses off to find new solutions we didn't think of. WHERE ARE THESE PEOPLE?!

Thank you so much, you really helped me to feel more confident about what I am gonna do As a person with no background, road B seems better to me, cause I know there are always people around me to assist me But my personality is more willing to road A , being alone in a position forces me to move on So...I prefer first way of breaking in, but I really afraid of screwing it up!

Hi Mahsa, Reading your comment was like reading my thoughts out loud, as the first option is very stressful but gives you no option than move and break out from your confort zone, and learn on you own cost and peril. On the other hand, having a mentor who guides you and from whom you can learn, is the smoothest way to level up, but it is not always the case that you will find the great mentor at every time. So I believe a mix of the two option is what one should do. Have a first experience as a PM in a small entity and try to level up by studying what PMs are giving online. This is where i rise a really good point of the video, is that PMs do not share infos and there experience enough in social media, Which is very sad , knowing that they can reach more people and bring very good help to fellows out there who really need some guidance.
