I worked at Charvel/Jackson during the Grover Jackson era and worked on the original Randy Rhodes 'V'. I'm also Jake E. Lee's roommate that painted his first "White Charvel". By way of trivia, Randy broke one of points off of the 'Vee' and had to send it back for repair. Gratefully the painter, Ernie Pedragon, had kept a small bottle of the custom mix paint to complete the repair. The stripes are not straight black, they are what we called midnight blue, which is transparent blue (aniline blue powder in clear lacquer) over black paint. Carl Sandoval did the inlay work including the truss rod cover. Couldn't resist commenting.

You were Jake's roommate? Cool! Was this when he was in Ratt? Did he use a Holdsworth or JB on Whitey? And what pups did he use on his other Charvels like the Blue one he played with Ozzy? Just curious. I wish they'd remix Ultimate Sin to make it heavy as intended. Ron Nevison totally mixed it down. Jake used an absolute TON of distortion on that album, but it's mixed in such a way as you just can't tell how heavy it was meant to be. As much as I love BATM his work on TUS totally outshines that first effort. Had he done one more album with Ozzy I think it would have been a real boon to Ozzy's career, because as good as Zakk was, he was no Jake. Didn't have the style and class and maturity in his playing or the songwriting and compositional chops. I saw Jake with Ozzy on TUS tour at Long Beach two nights in a row. Wasn't a 'Tallica fan (their fans were jerks!) but Ozzy put on a great show and Jake was just awesome. What a talent.

Fun fact: the King V's body design, just like the Rhoads, is now different from what it once was. The guitar was originally designed by Robbin Crosby from RATT who asked Jackson to make a Flying V that was big enough for him (he was 6'5) by mirroring the longer upper horn of the Rhoads at the bottom, making it a Double Rhoads. Robbin's nickname was "King" and thus the guitar was called the King V. RATT was very popular but the giant red V that Crosby played was too unwieldy and thus in the following years it was shortened at the request of several guitarists so it could be played by normal sized people. At first, however, like the original Rhoads, it was still a 22 fret guitar (the most famous early example of these models was James Hetfield recording the entirety of Master of Puppets on a white hardtail King V) but that changed when in 1986 Dave Mustaine of Megadeth asked Jackson for a King V with 24 frets. The massive sales and tour in support of Peace Sells in 1986, the overall success of Megadeth, and the longstanding partnership of Marty Friedman and Dave Mustaine with Jackson throughout the 80s and 90s meant that King Vs with 24 frets became a standard and permanent feature.

I spent the summer of 84 working at Charvel Jackson. It was located on Gladstone Street between Lone Hill and the 57 Freeway. The mailing address for the post office was San Dimas, California, but the physical location was in Glendora. Grover Jackson actually started making electric guitars called the Glendora. Also, bolt-on neck guitars were Charvels and neck-through body guitars were Jackson guitars. My best friend was a graphic artist and I spent my day sanding necks and bodies. It was a fun summer job.

I've been playing Charvel and Jackson guitars since they came out. I might be "older" but I also got to see Randy, Lynch, DeMartini, Bratta, EVH - and the whole lot of legendary guitarists! I saw Ozzy in 81 and Randy Rhoads blew my 13 year old mind! I bought a Les Paul copy "Crestline" - painted it white, and got an entire life's worth of inspiration from that single 1981 Blizzard tour due to the insanely talented Mr Randy Rhoads!!!

Interesting fun fact.... When I talked with EVH in '81, I talked about my obsession with necks... There was a certain shape and feel I was always chasing. I asked Edward what brand was his fav... he said "No matter what my neck says on it, it came from Charvel"! True story.... And I'm 5'9" Dagan... It's on buddy!

My first really nice guitar was a custom ordered Jackson from Grover himself back in 1983 ! It was a Ferrari red super strat with a Floyd and two Seymour Duncan HB's ! It cost $1200 which at the time was a lot for a guitar that didn't say "Gibson" on it at the time ! When I got it a couple months later it was pure magic ! The action was so low it played notes just by thinking about them ! I played it for about 12 years in a band and I let a few friends from some local bands play it a few times and everyone that was lucky enough to play it immediately made an offer to buy it ! I met a girl and fell in love ! She didn't like the attention I received when playing out so said I had to either choose her or the band ! I chose her and eventually sold my Jackson for a $1,000 and a 1970's Marshall Plexi half stack for (gulp!) $500 (ouch !) and 3 months later my girl left me and moved out of town ! Let that be a lesson to you ! Girls will always come and go but if you luck into a magic guitar ...............lose the girl that asks you to get rid of it ! I would trade my Nissan Maxima for that exact guitar right now !

My girl not only loved my playing, she wanted me to teach her how to play. That was cool. In all the years I've been playing there isn't anything I enjoyed more than sitting in our living room showing her how to play guitar. That was fun. She got pretty good at it too. Unfortunately, she got sick and passed away a couple of years ago. I still have her guitar on a stand next to my bed and every time I see it, it reminds me of a better time and place.

Jackson has been my favorite guitar company since I was 12 in 1989. I own two Jacksons a Japanese made dinky with orange, yellow, and blue hotrod flames & a black USA Production model Kelly. I used to own an amazing custom shop Kelly I wish i never got rid of. I already knew all 7 facts about them. The Death Angel designed by Rob Cavestany of the band Death Angel is my favorite Jackson. Jackson made a pretty cool variation of it called the Death Kelly the front half of the body is shaped like a Kelly and the back half is shaped like the Death Angel.

Fun fact. I have an original Jackson Dinky Reverse from 1995. The neck is almost too thin but I LOVE IT. I spoke to Grover Jackson and he was surprised I still had it after 10 years. He was shocked the neck hasn't broken yet because he said there was a spec error and the necks were made way too thin. I still have that guitar.

My first serious electric was a JS30 Rhoads. In my country at the time, getting gig bags was a nightmare for the rhoads, but there was a shop in my home town that sold used stuff. The only case they had was an old Rhoads flight case that was still branded Charvel Jackson. It was a tank but it was SO heavy.

4 or 5 years ago I saw a Jackson bass on eBay for a bargain price. My very old Aria wasn't sounding great and I needed something for gigs but didn't have much to spend. I took a gamble and it paid off because the bass I got was like new. There literally wasn't a mark on it, and it sounds great, is easy to play, and I love everything about it. My decision was partly swayed by the fact my maiden name was Jackson if I'm being very honest 😂

Every since I saw a video of sepulturas andreas kisser playing a jackson live at Donnington in 94 I've wanted one. A friend sold me a charvette, it's a bit beaten up but as a teenager going around his house it inspired me to pick up the guitar. I sold an expensive guitar I had and dropped down to a jackson soloist. It's the best guitar I've ever played. You get so much hardware and playability for your money. I'm eyeing up an Adrian Smith model. For a bedroom guitar player that price range from £400-£700 offers so much. I swear Dagan could sell ice to the Eskimos... Great video. Can you do a video on budget pedals that enable you to sound like an 80s metal god.....

Great video as always mate. I've loved these guitars since the '80's couldn't afford a real Jackson (or Charvelle-J) at the time so ended up with an Ibanez PR1660 2nd hand in '87 for £250 , same shape as a Rhoads. Still got it but frankly not as good as the real thing obviously. Finally got a Soloist SLSMG new for £800-ish about 10-12 years ago. Truly awesome guitar and one of my favorites being MIJ, super-lightweight, all mahogany with EMG's and an amazing neck and neck to body join (full access) with ebony board...all in beautiful satin black. If you can find one get it, you won't be disappointed! How about a review of the Soloist SL1 USA, pricey but highly desirable.

The build quality on my js22 is unreal. Neck straight af, frets smooth along the edges, the high e never gets caught under any frets. I actually love this satin finish neck way more than the painted gloss finish on the Ibanez rg I had years back. Just so comfortable to play

I have 2 gibsons and 2 jacksons already but I just ordered a kelly 10/1 and youre right about making sure you choose a cool looking instrument that you want to play, it will make you want to pick it up and play it. What a great video! In August 1989, I custom ordered a Jackson from a long-defunct guitar shop that carried them. I ordered a Dinky Strat with a flamed tiger-maple neck, a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, an upturned headstock, a Floyd Rose, and a single J90C humbucker. I had it painted in blue denim, which was avaiable on the limited edition model they had in '89. I was torn between ordering one custom, or buying a dinky strat they had at the shop that was what they called "granite" finish - it looked like granite, complete with a huge "crack" in it. The only other time I ever saw one like that was when I saw Nevermore live in a bar that doesn't exist anymore, either. My Jackson was $1275 plus tax. The owner did the order for me, and he told me deposits were non-refundable, and it was stamped that on the receipt. The day it showed up in late November 1989, the owner called me and told me he would give me my deposit back if I didn't want it. Hell no! I absolutely love it, and I still have it to this day. It has a 4 digit serial number on the back of the nexk plate. I also got my free t-shirt, and my hand-signed letter from Grover. They also said I could have sent the back-plate back to them and they would engrave it for me, but I chose not to do that.

Robin Crosby had a few custom Double Rhodes where the top fin matched the bottom. Then came the King V with a slightly smaller fins and bottom to meet normal specs as Robin was 6'4".

USA Jacksons are out of reach for most players today. And the quality hasn't exactly improved. Try to buy a good vintage one, which are most of them, and you'll need a whole lot of coin.

I love Jackson guitars. I have an Adrian Smith signature with ebony fretboard USA 2021 model and a 2007 Jackson Dk2m inferno red which i upgraded with a real German made floyd rose and swapped out the JB humbbucker with a DiMarzio Tone zone. Both guitars sound amazing.

I have my original " metal giraffe" jc68, .no neck pickup and a Japanese strat bucker in the bridge, 1 way switch on/ or on with a db cut. Still plays when it needs to be used. Great guitars.

I love the Concorde. It’s beautiful. I know RR wanted more angular but I feel like the Concorde is perfect. The little bit more body on it makes the tone sound much fuller. Horns are a bit shorter too so it’s less likely to break off (but it will eventually lol)

Bought a Corey B. Trivium model when they only were available in black matte. Great guitar, 7 string, stable tuning even with Floyd dive bombs. It’s a beast for sure. Totally impressed with the quality of the Jackson guitar. Looking at the RR3 model next. Thanks for the great video about Jackson. Have Schecter guitars as well, gonna check out that video. I got a soloist in satin red that I nodded with Seymour Duncan JB and Distortion pickups with coil split and I also upgraded the floyd rose saddles to steel and the sustain block with brass

That's such a coincidence! The same day this video was released I bought my new JACKSON guitar! It's SO GOOD! I love it! I just got this in my recommended and had to watch. My new guitar is the Dinky Pro DK2QM and it's SO GOOD! I also saved like 400 bucks while buying it because it was repainted! If anyone is looking for a guitar that's around 1000-1500 I would definitely recommend this

My 3rd guitar was and still is a Jackson Fusion XL Professional bought new in around 1992/1993. It was and still is the best sounding and playing guitar I’ve ever picked up. I paid around 650.00 new from guitar center. I played so much I had to change the strings every 2 weeks. Problem was I kept breaking string saddles. At the time 20 dollars per broken saddle was a lot of money. I found out what a licensed Floyd Rose tremolo was. Chinesiam! Pot metal. Crap. I saved and bought a real Floyd Rose tremolo and never had another problem. I still shred every day. Thanks for the video.

These are quite fascinating facts, dagan. I never knew that Jackson guitars was originally charvel. And that Jackson guitars was established when randy Rhoads asked Grover Jackson to design a guitar for him. And I’m amazed to learn that some of Jackson’s most iconic guitar were in fact designed by customers in the 1980s. Since we’re talking Jackson guitars, I do own a Jackson js dinky 7-string guitar and it sounds awesome for an affordable 7-string. And recently I’ve been thinking about purchasing a Jackson spectra 5-string bass in a silver burst finish. Especially since I’ve always wanted to purchase a bass in a silver burst finish. I did try one out a few years ago and I thought it sounded awesome. I’m thinking about getting one sometime soon.

I have a base model JS32-8 and its absolutely bad ass. Its Factory setup is playable, could use some fretwork, but plays and sounds and aggressive as your JS and more. I recently got into Jacksons for the kelly, as I own a Gibson Explorer. I wanted to try something with all the bells and whistles for half the price. Great facts.!

I still have my made in Japan (supposedly) Jackson Professional 1994 or so model I bought as a kid back then. It has EMG's in it now, but always plays amazing.

My first guitar was a Jackson PS2. Bought it at a pawnshop with money I got for christmas. Learned how to play guitar with it and bought several other Jackson’s for years after. I deviated into other brands and recently came back to Jackson. Got myself an Adrian Smith USA San Dimas. Very expensive, but very worth it. Man, that thing is one of the best guitars I’ve ever owned. The neck is incredible. The action and feel is perfect. I also got the Adrian Smith X series and for the price, it is a great guitar. Simply put in Gotoh tuners and an original Floyd Rose and you’re all set. I loved Jackson back in the day, and now I know I’ve always have.

I just bought a copy of the randy rhoads that you are holding. It was made by a company called vista. Ive never heard of them, but it awesome. It plays really nice. I put a set of hetfield signature pups in it. I really enjoy it.

Always wanted a Soloist with the Skull Graveyard print that I saw in every music shop back in the early 90's. However, the only Jackson I currently own Is a '98 Japanese import RR3 in crimson swirl finish (with the original Takeuchi designed Floyd Rose), and it's one of my favorite guitars in my collection.

I absolutely fell in love with the Ibanez Jem when I first started out but they were very expensive. I later on got a used Jackson really cheap and fixed it up and the feel of the neck and the guitar in general was the same to me. I now have 4 Jacksons including the Rhodes V with reverse headstock. Such a cool looking guitar and sounds great. I love the reverse headstock. They look so mean.

Ozzy is 5’10”, and there are pics of him and Randy on stage, where Ozzy is barefoot and Randy is wearing heeled boots, and Ozzy still towers over him!

Def Leppard is the reason I started playing! I’ve loved all their guitar players- Pete Willis, Phil Collen, And of course the RIFFMASTER Steve Clark. I had a silver metal flake super strat like Phil when I was in high school. Now I’m rockin a cherry burst Les Paul like Steve Clark.

I have a Dinky with EMG silver in the bridge and EMG gold in the neck position. For over 20 years it has served me in every situation on stage and studio. It can scream or sound butter-smooth. Even when I had100+ guitars at my disposal, I would still pick up the black Jackson for almost every live situation.

The Jackson SL2 Mick Thompson Signature has the best bridge design in the world: A FIXED Floyd Rose Style locking system. That is so groundbreaking and awesome! PLUS it looks fantastic - almost like a black or white tuxedo. I absolutely love this guitar and I play not only metal but any kind of music with it (had to change the PUs though). Very cool video, do more Jackson and Charvel please!!!

There was this very limited run of Japanese Jackson guitars in the late 90s that had 2 different finishes, the now famous Eerie Descent Swirl and the rarer Crimson Swirl. That beautiful Crimson Swirl finish never got reproduced (from what I know) since that run. I was lucky enough to get a Kelly Ke3 and god damn, that is one of, if not the most killer finishes on an axe I've ever seen.

Unique to Jackson is that even the lower level guitars sound and feel amazing… so long as you avoid the ones without the built errors (unaligned necks, bad frets/nut etc)

I found a dismantled Jackson Kelly in a skip. Missing a few parts but when I had got it all back together it plays like a dream! Fitted a Sanwa kill switch to it and it rocks like F. Bit heavy though , (weightwise) haha

I have a Jackson Stealth EX Professional, made in Japan. It's from the early 90's and I've been told that these were the first imports from Jackson; built by a Japanese luthier personally trained by Grover Jackson, and they were of such quality (and about half the price of the USA models) that they were digging too far into the USA model sales, and were discontinued after a few years.
