Reason 1 Iconic tone, 2 versatile, 3 sound quality, 4 works well with other pedals, 5 Boss quality you can count on, 6 Built to last! 7 price. 8 Excellent for blues rock,9 Best sounding Overdrive on the market! It's on my board 20 yrs and got it used. I pity the fool that doesn't have one 😂

I've owned a few over my career, dont own one at the moment. My drive selections for quite a while have been an MXR TS clone, an Ari9n SOD-1, and a modded Turbo Rat. One of the few things in life that never downgraded quality for sake of selling more over a short period of time. Boss pedals for the win! My sd-1 is over 35 years old and never had any issue's with it. It's the equivelant of a good 'ol Nokia for musicians.
@sassulusmagnus Жыл бұрын
I like the Nokia comparison. True. Another great thing about these, besides sounding great, is that you can get another one in just about any music shop anywhere on the planet. Very handy for a touring guitarist.

The late, great, Criss Oliva (of Savatage) used 2 of these: both full up, with one tone all the way off (for rhythm) and the other all the way up (solo's), running into the clean channel on (usually) a Marshall amp. The man had tone for days.

I got some of SD1 used for mods, I got the best of it by disconnecting one cap C6, and replacing the electrolytic 47uf cap for another 47uf but at 100V (bigger) the sound improves big time, I don't recommend touch anything else, but if you want to go to a completely new level, get rid of all the switching components section (caps, resistors, transistors, and some coupling) and add a true bypass module like those Griffin Effects to continue using the flip flop switching, the extra components actually muffle the sound, by clearing this you actually get a clear and louder pedal, you will realize that this is the only pedal you need for the rest of you life.

I actually have and use 66 pedals, all of them come to my every gig. I have at least 20 pricey Overdrives. BIG BUT. If I am asked to recommend an OD and yet know nothing about the style you will use it in I would recommend the Boss SD-1. Even later if you specialize in a certain sound etc. and get another OD you will still have that Boss sitting beside it. There always a few tunes you will 'need' it for :-)

I went digital awhile back, circa Axe FX II era, when Kemper was still newish, but mature. Sold off my pedals. But then I started adding pedals again, mostly just OD and Distortion pedals. Decided to Collect, 'classic' and/or 'iconic' dirt pedals. Why? One was, because the Axe FX III I was at, as well as some digital combos work well with them, But I also added back one Tube Combo. And frankly I just like pedals. One of the first was the SD-1. THough I did go for the WAZA version, catching a great sale on them.

SD-1 turns every Tube Amp into a Rocking Monster, even my Class 5 Marshall (5 wats no over drive) with the SD1 in front of it, it sounds awsome. Not to mention the larger amps, and the SD1 Loves Marshall Plexis, Ive also heard of adding another SD1 in line and double the Awsomeness, the Overtones and Pinch harmonics are almost automatic And its Overdrive not "Distortion" its just an increase in Input so it doesnt sound Fuzzy

Volume cranked, drive at about 7 o’clock, tone at about 11 o’clock: the perfect clean boost to give your clean amp some grit, while simultaneously acting as the perfect gain boost for heavy shredders. Most overdrive pedals aren’t that versatile, especially for the money. The SD-1 is king, and has a permanent place on my board, outlasting the TS9, 808, RC booster, MXR Micro Amp etc…

I have an unusual set of gear, and I bought this as my first pedal when I had a resurgence in electric guitar playing - when I first started at age 16, pedals weren't a thing like they are now in my 50s. My guitar is an incredible sounding (and playing) Godin solid body, LG EMG it's called, with double humbucking pickups, active too. This pedal does not have an iconic tone when mixed with this guitar, when mixed with this guitar and stacked with other pedals, the sound quality isn't very high end, and about the only thing I can agree with from that other commenter is that it would take some effort to destroy - isn't that always the way with evil things.
