I'm a heavy equipment road mechanic. I will ALWAYS use air. Especially in the cold, all these different brands mean alot of batteries, and chargers, this eats into my space. Another big problem is battery packs alway die. Whatsca mechanic going to do on a road call with a dead battery for his tools?(alot of added time. No one wants to wait for battery pack to recharge)

I LOVE my air hammer! Maybe a little too much... hahaha. Seriously, I use the thing on stuff I probably shouldn’t. It takes stubborn lock rings off fuel pumps, cracks open stuck bleeder screws and breaks off shock absorber studs. The list goes on and on. I’ve got an entire drawer in my cart full of bits for it. Did I mention I love my air hammer? As for other air tools I still use... Needle scaler, die grinders, 90 degree drill and 1/2 inch impact for when the cordless one just can’t cut it. I also still use my1/4 inch air ratchet because I simply haven’t bought a cordless one yet. I’ve got half a dozen blow guns... long ones, bent ones, large bores and a suction one that sprays liquid for degreasing. I’ve also got a digital tire inflator because the analog ones aren’t as accurate.

When I'm working as a mechanic, 1/2", 3/4 and 1" impact for working on equipment and BIG trucks. Air hammer and mini die grinders both straight and 90°. These are things that will never be fazed out by cordless tools. Now when I pull a slip to go back out as a Union Ironworker you'll likely never see cordless or even corded electric impacts that will replace our 3/4", 1" impacts the 1&1/2" spline drives and the "Helldogs" (15-35LBS air hammer/chippers) all run on 3/4" and 1" air lines. Plus your not going to fill tires on anything bigger than a car or small truck with a cordless air compressor and while you're being paid to do it and still feel good about yourself LOL

Andrew V--Years back when I worked for the Feds (Bureau of Reclamation), I went around putting swivel air fittings on our pneumatic tools. It made so much sense to have them, I couldn't understand why no one did it before me. Turns out people get used to the "hard way" of doing things, and can't see past that. I was new to the group and saw a number of things that looked dangerous or were too heavy for me to work with, so I made them safer for all of us. I did this under the guise of being the group Safety Officer, so I never heard a peep out of anyone holding the purse strings. It didn't cost very much and made them look good to the bigger bosses, so I was given free rein.

I pretty much agree with everything you said. As a diyer, The convenience of the battery tools isn't great enough to make me switch, strictly from a cost perspective. If I was a professional using them everyday, my attitude would change. There is a new Snap-on polisher that there isn't a air tool equivalent. That polisher will start a fire quickly, lol. Hope they get that fixed.

I’ve been buying more air tools lately. I have plenty of battery stuff but sometimes it’s the size and power. I could really use a mini air ratchet. I have a 14.4 impact, ratchets, and an 18v 3/8 that all see pretty regular use. Anytime Im going to 1/2” it’s an air tool. The battery stuff is good but it’s just too heavy and bulky. It’s not often that I need my air hammer but when I do it’s a god send. I don’t see anything other than air for those. I have air powered die grinders and cut off tools. I literally just got the same drill. Mostly just wanted it because it’s size. I still haven’t seen anything that I think can get in to where I’m usually working. Battery powered tools will likely take over eventually but it’s going to be a very long time. I like the reliability of air. I don’t have to worry about the battery charge or the battery going bad. Just have to take care of the hose either being in the way or rubbing up on a painted body panel.

I have and use both. I have yet to use an air impact that matches the power of my Milwaukee 2767 high torque though but it is heavy and is overkill for most jobs. I normally use my HF Earthquake XT stubby impact for everything unless I need the muscle. The stubby blows my old full size 1/2in craftsman out of the water on power and is 1/3 the size. With that said, my air compressor is definitely more valuable to me. If I had to give up one or the other, I would certainly choose to keep my compressor. A good high torque air impact will do 98% of what the milwaukee can do. I believe Aircat released a new 1/2in that matches the cordless on torque.

They do make electric die grinders to be fair, I've got a corded one that works great for porting/polishing and windowing out parts stuff like that - as good as an air grinder just I don't have a huge compressor. They make a cordless version too (Makita does at least) but obviously you're gonna burn through batteries pretty quick if you're doing any real head work or anything on the bench. To be honest though, if I had a shop, I'd probably get a cordless one for when you're working under a car or something. Easy to just grab, no hooking up air dragging a line with you

For service calls i don’t worry though because I know someone else will always have a cordless one 😂 I’m a cheapskate so I roll with air

I'm betting it was easier to use an electric (corded) drill for all of their needs. That, and if the cord was too short, you just pulled out an extension cord to reach any place you needed to. It also got around the problem of who was going to oil and maintain them; it seemed that was something no one did regularly at my place of work.
