Fun Fact: When The Lion King was released and Pocahontas being developed, Pocahontas crew and producers bullied The Lion King crews and producers saying that it would been better than The Lion King but they were wrong, The Lion King contained adventure, magic, comedy and musical sequences, The first half of Pocahontas was good but it was bad when the romance between John Smith and Pocahontas was developed

Yes! The first half of Pocahontas is quite excellent. Very watchable. It slows down later.

I love how as soon as it became clear the Lion King would be the bigger hit Katzenberg got out in front to claim its entire success for himself

The success of Lion King rests on the hands of Rob Minkoff, Don Hahn, Elton John and the entire "B-Team" of animators that worked on the film. Katzenberg is full of shit to claim he had anything at all to do with Lion Kings success, let along ALL of it.

Very similar thing happened with Sleeping Beauty vs. 101 Dalmatians in that Walt channeled all of his energy and resources into Sleeping Beauty, convinced that it would be a big hit and would be "the next Snow White," while he perceived Dalmatians as the light commercial vehicle being made with the experimental new Xerox format - he even tasked story director Bill Pete to the film, virtually ignoring it for the most part. Of course, Beauty would go on to tank both critically and commercially, while Dalmatians became the studio's biggest box office hit since Snow White and remains one of the most profitable animated films of all time when adjusted for inflation. Ironically this clip is from the documentary "Waking Sleeping Beauty."

Actually it was a matter of costs. Sleeping Beauty nearly bankrupted the studio, so they went with the Xerox method for Dalmatians since it was cheaper. It also was still lifelike. Disney had to do it that way or it would have destroyed them. Fortunately it all worked out in the end.

Jefferey Katzenberg was stupid for saying that. I can't believe he thought Pocahontas would be the more successful of the two. The fact that the opposite happened is still funny to me

I wouldn't call him stupid. He just thought Pocahontas was a winner bc of past successes.

Katzenberg still made more stupid decisions than that though. He did almost destroy Toy Story and he pretty much derailed Dreamworks for a while...

Well when he started Dreamworks he thought Shrek was going to be a fail, and animators that underperformed we’re forced to work on it.

He only had a "Sure thing" that Pocahontas would be a hit because "all Disney movies that have a princess is a sheer hit".

He also thought The Little Mermaid wasn't going to be a hit, because it was a movie targeted to girls.

Here is a really funny story about Katzenberg and The Lion King... allegedly, when shown the original cut of Mufasa's death, he pointed at his eye and said "I'm not crying." So they made the scene longer... and it worked.

Pocahontas and Lion King are my ultimate favorite Disney Movies. I honestly have to say that indeed Lion King is #1 while Pocahontas is #2 but hey... they are pretty close. Pocahontas is wonderful but it's not for everyone, also I believe that a very big down for that movie is that since she was the first to be based on an actual historical event many people are salty about it's inaccuracy. Yes it completely romanticized and made to look nice when in real life it WAS savage. But I mean... it is based on that event, its not a biographical movie or anything it's not a history class. Its more serious and "dark tone" but it is also intense and I wanna point out that she was actually the first princess to show she didn't need a man at the end of the story. She saved him, and choose her own path even if it wasn't with him.

Yes it was!! Jeffrey Katzenberg was somewhat new to the game of Animation at that time but he ended up quitting Disney and cofounded DreamWorks Studios with Steven Spielberg where he produced Shrek, Madagascar, How to Train Your Dragon etc

Everything Fangirl well apparently him and Roy Disney(Walt's nephew) were constantly disagreeing and butting heads..When Frank Wells(President of the Disney comp) died Katzenberg lobbied for his position and was denied because Frank had just died...So Katzenberg left to start his own company with Steven Spielberg and thats how we got the Dreamworks Production Company

Everything Fangirl as much of an ass Katzenberg was at times he really was an integral part of why Disney became a Power House in Hollywood because he helped build thier production company Touchstone Pictures

Katzenberg also kept forcing John Lasseter to make Toy Story "edgy" and "adult", and when Pixar did do that, Roy Disney called the initial draft of Toy Story "the worst thing I've ever seen".
