My family lived in the Washington DC area in the period 1956- 1959. I remember the NBC broadcast in 1958 when John Cameron Swayze announced the last long distance passenger train run under steam. It was of course the N&W J. I remember that broadcast like it was yesterday- so sad, even as a young man I knew that the railroads would never be the same again.

Did you mean to ask WHY is the K2 class shrouded like the J class? The answer is because the N&W liked the design and felt they could use more streamlined engines to fill out their needs of passenger train power. The J class created an image that the railroad believed help attract passengers so why not extend that image to all of their main line trains? There were also branch line passenger and mixed trains that were pulled by non-streamlined engines such as Pacifics and 4-8-0's.

Sadly, Ralph Morse passed away a couple of months ago. He was 93 years old. You're right though, he was a great narrator and was active with a theatre group until last year. Thanks for asking. -Jim Herron

What great stuff! I need to have this one. I was always interested in the Jawn Henry Sadly I was too busy with 'other things' to go see the 611 when it ran in fan trip service and too young to have see any of the others. How sad that Jawn Henry was scrapped with all the other steam turbines from PRR, C&O etc. couldn't they have saved ONE?? Even one rusting away is better than none at all imho. Look at SteamTown as a shining example of a locomotive graveyard. Great to see these under steam!

The Jawn Henry was complex and expensive-to say nothing about inefficient-and was scrapped at about the same time that the N & W finally committed to dieselization with steam replacement parts becoming scarce...

Norfolk & Western railroad used steam up to 1961. I have the book entitled The last steam railroad in America, it's about the Steam engines of the Norfolk & Western. The streamlines J class Steam engines and even some hot the streamlined K class steam engines are some of the most beautiful streamlined steam engines Ever built and ever ran. Saving J class number 611 and running 611 on excursions is great.

+Christopher O'Rourke Actually, the last N&W steam run was in early May, 1960 out of Williamson, WV with Y6b 2190 although one of the S!a switchers may have been alive for another day or two in the yard there.

Steam era ended in May 1960 when N&W S1a 0-8-0 #290 dropped her fire for the last time. Between 1960 and 1970, tens of thousands of diesels replaced steam locomotives on Mark I, II, and III railroads. N&W only ran a couple Y class engines from 1961 - 1962 before reporting their final retirement in early winter 1963.

@hrvideo Nope cause "Hooters on Blue Ridge" has film and sound of 2300. But yes it was an experimental unit that was scrapped late in 1957.

If 1218 is ever brought back and NS allows her to run their rails again( a miracle from Heaven) like their doing with 611, 4501 and 765 now, I would be more happy to see her run free under own power again because the A's could conquer anything that the J's couldn't do like their articulated ability to maneuver tight curves and pull long trains almost up to a hundred cars without breaking a sweat. Just a perfect type bread and butter locomotive that any railroad and engineer would want to have to run with for special excursions that run in especially steep grades and mountains when a running long trains.

I was told wile riding 611 that if they finish the engine house fundraiser and the funds to keep 611 running they might consider restoring 1218 its unlikely but it is a possibility

136 and 133 are actually shrouded 4-8-2 mountains their shrouds look like the 611 and the J class 4-8-4 northerns if 1366 and 133 are sisters like the Js then their girls. LOL!!! 1:37-1:56

I think all the steam locos in parks and museums should be pulled out and restored and use diesels to take their place in the parks and playgrounds. Lots of employment for men and women plus locomotives with more character than current diesels. Must go now need medication. Ha ha. Great video tho. 👍👍😃👨🏼‍✈️😀
