@@guntoaknifefight the CIA made up the idea of "communist brainwashing" in the '50s to explain away why so many US POWs in Korea and China were giving detailed confessions of war crimes and some were defecting to China (the real reason was a lot simpler, want to take a guess?). anyway, then the very same CIA spent decades doing horrific human experimentation in hopes of making brainwashing real, so that they could do things like mind control a random unwitting person into doing assassinations or torture for them and then erase their memory. (ARTICHOKE, MKULTRA, etc & who knows what other fucked up crimes against humanity they were up to that they *did* manage to destroy all the documents about.) again, the USSR, Chinese and Korean communists had not actually developed anything of the sort and were not pursuing it, and the US knew that but decided it would be more convenient to just put stuff like "The Manchurian Candidate" out there and encourage the public to assume it was about a real thing

Still, Cuba managed to develop a corona vaccine on their own, and I'm sure you can find other discoveries made in these nations. Even in capitalist nations, most research is done by public sector projects in the military and academic circles, by waged people.
