➤What if I had a pocket car? The things I could do. Your cims have them, and YOU can take them away! Then they will have to seek proper transport like the rest of us. BUT... there is a trade off. Learn how to tame your cims car habit, while also encouraging it by supplying them with parking! It's complicated...

It was Stone Librande, lead designer of the 2013 Sim City, interviewed in The Atlantic: "I think the biggest one was the parking lots. When I started measuring out our local grocery store, which I don't think of as being that big, I was blown away by how much more space was parking lot rather than actual store. That was kind of a problem, because we were originally just going to model real cities, but we quickly realized there were way too many parking lots in the real world and that our game was going to be really boring if it was proportional in terms of parking lots... So what we do in the game is that we just imagine they are underground. We do have parking lots in the game, and we do try to scale them -- so, if you have a little grocery store, we'll put six or seven parking spots on the side, and, if you have a big convention center or a big pro stadium, they'll have what seem like really big lots -- but they're nowhere near what a real grocery store or pro stadium would have. We had to do the best we could do and still make the game look attractive."

That said, I think that removing one of the major negative externalities of car reliance because it "looks bad" is part of why city simulators often feel biased towards creating car-centric cities. You _can_ reduce the amount of space required for parking by offering walkability, public transport coverage and mixed-use neighbourhoods, the designer just decided that wasn't "fun".

@Ben B Artist Agreed. This is why city builders have things like budgets, zoning demand and traffic management in the first place. Foregoing another possible mechanic for players to manage just because it's possible to be managed poorly feels like a cop-out. Where do you draw the line? Do you remove highways because they can get congested? Remove factories because smog can be an eyesore? I'm very glad this function of traffic manager exists.

I despise the whole 'pocket cars' situation so much I can't play without realistic parking. It really puts the focus on transport and even how you design your parking. Cars still have to enter and leave the parking area, so just because there's enough parking doesn't mean its designed just right. Don't want a million cars attempting to park up a dirt road with one access to visit a prime attraction. One issue that's fun to design around is what the parking area is intended for. I had to restrict tourists from filling up a train station that was meant for fulfilling an oil industry. They'd enter the city in a car, drive all the way through the city to park at the train station in the oil industry, and then take the train meant for workers back into the city. End up a lot of traffic entering the oil area just to park. Fixing that with a nice tourist ban was really satisfying. The second issue that I see no easy way to solve as it seems to dive into the random brain of the cims is to what they do after they park their car. They'll drive to work and park, then walk to a shop, then walk home and leave their car parked at work. Once in awhile I'll go through a busy parking lot and do a little "towing" of cars. You're at home on the far side of the city and you left your car parked in a fire station you don't work at? Car gets "towed" (deleted).
@angrodNumenesse
@angrodNumenesse 2 жыл бұрын
Cars getting "towed" sounds like a great mod idea. Cims park somewhere and leave their car for too long, or, they end up too far away? Despawn the car.
@krzysztofg7677
@krzysztofg7677 2 жыл бұрын
@@angrodNumenesse parked cars are automatically despawned or moved closer to home building but only when cim wants to leave house. I found that a lot of seniors don't want to visit anything so their parked cars may occupy parking spots in the city for a long time (often until they die :/ ). Car towing is nice idea for a mod but towing itself (animation) is like 20% of problem to solve. The main thing to figure out would be the condition when it could be towed, where and how citizens should react. I would see it like cars are towed to police parking, then citizen needs to walk or use public transport to get car back (obviously by paying a little $ to city budget for "unlocking it") Time is passing pretty fast in the game so... they may die in traffic jam/bus trying to get back their car :D

I like to turn on realistic parking as it makes it more challenging to ensure that there is an alternative to cars in public transport available everywhere. The only issue I have with it is the really tragically bad parking AI. I can't fault it too much, but it just randomly searches for parking (assuming all streets are parkable essentially). Instead, if you don't have parking on the streets or masses of parking lots, it has a hard time finding parking garages. There's some good assets on the workshop that have 200 parking spots in one garage for example, but the bloody sims can manage to not find it, even if it's just across the street. Also, there's some bug with realistic parking that I can't remember how to fix it (some setting) that makes the parking AI completely ignore parking lot roads.

I tried one on the modular parking mods, can't recall which one, but it added to park stats which bothers me as I don't consider a parking lot to be a "recreational park", I'm guessing I either did something wrong or am just to anal about the numbers. I love the realistic parking feature, I think it’s fascinating that both of the main agent based city builders decided to use pocket cars for the same reasons but I much prefer a more realistic system. It definitely can be a bit weird sometimes, but it’s not awful. The most common issue I have is that people tend to forget their cars, in my current city especially there’s hundreds of parked cars owned by people who are on the opposite end of the city because they drove to work then left their car and took the El train home instead of driving. It seems to cause some Ai issues too, next time that citizen wants to drive they get confused by the lack of a car and end up cancelling trips, and I can’t find a good way of removing the abandoned cars from the lots. The other thing I noticed (which isn’t necessarily bad but it did surprise me) is that it can massively reduce the amount of cars in the city, with the new AI cars can only be generated at the edge of the map on a road connection, or at parking spaces if they genuinely need a car, which means that in my island city with no road connections people get out of the harbour without a car and then don’t end up generating one even at parking spots since the public transit is so good, my city has 60,000 people but a tiny fraction of that actually drive, probably less than 10% of people. The worst part is the CPU draw, especially on cities with more cars it can lag the game a lot, and large parking lots full of cars cause a lot more lag especially when you do something that moves the cars around, this massively slows the game down.

Sometime I'll keep the train isolated from the main road by either not connecting the street, or by limiting it to service vehicles only. I'll leave a nice footpath to let the cims get to and from the station, and you can lead said path to a carpark for the purpose of the trainstation, that way they don't just spawn a car from the station itself. But the setting change also works 🧡🧡 Where I live (Perth, WA), all our stations on my local line are between the lanes of the freeway, and you park outside the freeway and walk over a bridge to get inside the station proper, so I tried to replicate the feel.

YUMBLtv, you've expertly affirmed what I've begrudgingly accepted. My core i7 4960x w/32GB of RAM is too ancient for TM:PE’s realistic parking. If ever you want to see your highway and road traffic slow to a dismal crawl, by all means, activate that feature. Otherwise, as you've suggested, make a sensible mass transit network the best defense against those unsightly pocket cars.

Great explanation of ParkingAI but I must correct one misconception. Electric car parking spaces do have special function - only electric cars can park there and unlike normal cars (combustion engine) EVs may use both type of parking spaces (EV or normal). Parking spots with handicap signs are purely decorative so that one was correct (sadly). With regards to EVs there was a bug that limited number of situations when citizen could spawn EVs when ParkingAI was enabled. We've fixed it already in the TM:PE TEST, hopefully next week it will be released as Stable so you will notice a lot more EV driving around (GreenCities DLC - Force Electric Cars district policy will finally start working correctly) :)

Always love seeing new solutions to parking, feels like the mods are getting so much more refined these days. So many different options to choose from. I tend to flip-flop on realistic parking myself. I think it's a lot of fun to play with, but the CPU usage is no joke. Can be frustrating that there's a lot of fun things I'd love to incorporate but as I get further into it my computer just can't keep up. Both RAM and CPU usage start to struggle. I've lost several builds because the game decides to crash on loading. I admittedly probably need to trim some assets but it can be hard to choose which assets to disable/delete lol
@krzysztofg7677
@krzysztofg7677 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, we are aware about CPU usage and we are testing various solutions, but parking space search, like IRL is pretty hard problem to solve. With regards to crash on load, it's in 99% cases out of memory error which could be solved temporarily by increasing page file size. Once you find good size it will never crash again - in the past I was testing savegames with 10k assets having only 16GB RAM - big enough page file (sometimes >50GB) always solved the problem with obvious drawback in form of greatly increased loading time. They were only tests so I didn't care too much since loading those savegames were the only way to find the source of a bug or problem :)

I live in Paris France and there is absolutely zero parking lots in the open. You can find parking builidings with several floors full of parkings spaces or, more often, parkings underground. Parking lots in the open are just impossible because of the value of the land. It is true in Paris but also in many big cities around the world where land value is high. So while I’m glad I don’t have to account for parking in the vanilla game. If it were more realistic I think it would to go along way to teaching people just how terrible a land-use parking is, And what the benefits/differences between different types of land use are; like the difference between suburban sprawl and transit oriented development

Is it known exactly how the red buildings in the traffic view work algorithmically? The obvious conclusion is that that red buildings need parking nearby but that doesn't seem to be the case, at least not exclusively. It feels like the answer is that a cim may want to park somewhere along the way to the ultimate destination and has trouble routing to that location, e.g. near a train station. Biffa seemed to run into this a while back with a perpetually dark red stadium with tons of available parking. On the other hand, I've seen cims circling around their destination passing up one parking space after another. The solution seems to be to have comprehensive transit and parking options everywhere. The A.I. also takes a long time to adjust to whatever mitigation steps you attempt. The second method is nice! I'm glad you tackled the 'drive across the grass or jump th curb to park' problem. However, if one is concerned with realistic parking, the parking spots really need some more space between opposing rows. I mean, how is a car (let alone an RV) going to get in or out of a spot that has less than a car's length to the opposite spot?

If the city is very well-serviced in terms of public transport, it ought to cut into the parking needs as well, so it's a bit weird that buildings have separate parking and transit needs. They ought to have accessibility needs that can be fulfilled by pools of either parking or transit. Perhaps with a few exceptions that really do require special vehicle access, like trucks for commercial buildings or, I guess, a certain percentage of shopping, especially if it involves large packages such as furniture, might genuinely require hauling vehicles.

Will cims switch from cars to public transport for the last leg of their journey? If so, you could build park 'n' rides near service interchanges and the outskirts of high-density areas - large parking lots connected to transit hubs. Make your mass transit cheap and levy a high toll on car users who still opt to remain in their vehicle. In theory, that would minimize cims driving around looking for parking and would allow you to consolidate parking into a few mass 'car farms' outside the city.

Thanks! I've been very curious about the realistic parking mechanics so thanks for giving some insight. I really liked realistic parking until it started causing problems. As you pointed out, it does solve some issues.... but with very unrealistic behavior, which defeats the purpose of "realistic parking". My opinion is that the behaviors are 1000x more absurd than pocket cars. What is realistic about cims driving from work to a home that is very close, yet the cims drive all the way across the map, park near a tourist location (clogging up all the available tourist parking who then have to go clog up other distant parking lots resulting in an endless cycle), then get on public transport to be dropped off and then have to walk further to home than if they would have just walked home from work to start with? And, adding insult to injury, their home has a driveway/garage so I have no problem with them driving home and their "pocket car" disappears simulating they parked in the drive way/garage. With realistic parking, I also think there are serious issues with the AI mechanics. I really have no idea, but I've seen cims endlessly circling and they will pass up tons of open parking, so my guess is some cim half way across the universe has already "claimed" the open spot but hasn't arrived yet. Though I appreciate the effort and need for the mod, I think it causes more unrealistic problems than it solves.

I had a block of commercial in the middle and car parks all the way round the edge and I still got cars driving round and round 'looking for parking'. Also it seems to increase the chance of the AI failing where you go on route view and the end of the route is always just in front of the car, then shifts a couple units forward when reached and so on to infinity
@ralalbatross

The issue is the heuristic involved. The problem is that realistic parking behaviours do actually involve a ton of people driving around clogging up roads pointlessly. In well developed cities with transit networks and limited parking that assumption is baked into the decisions people make and they choose to make smarter decisions. If you want an American hell hole you should be able to switch on Freedom Mode or something and they will default to needing kilometres of parking space around a small shop. For saner European cities realistic parking should take into account local parking density in its pathfinding decision maker heuristic.

One thing I really wish is that there was a better solution to ban private automobiles from areas. You can do it, but you have to manually apply to all the individual roads and it takes forever. I prefer to force my sims to use cycling and public transit infrastructure, I mean, it's a high density area with cycling paths and train stations every couple blocks. Quit acting like lazy Americans and just take the train. It would also be nice if they would factor in lack of parking before choosing their mode of transport. It might save processing in the long run, too. basically, if the building they are pathing to is red in the parking overview, they will add a large multiplier to the driving distance similar to the private automobile ban on a road, making other options more attractive. Then parking would generally even itself out.

I think it was the devs for Sim City who said that lol when they developed the game they realized most of American cities are actually parking spots and it would make for an insanely boring game if they were to include them. Cause you get like... one square of space to build on in that game lmao It would be aaaaaall parking lots and dotted by a handful buildings if it was realistic. This is why even though I downloaded all the parking lots, I don't really use them. This game is inherently car-focused which I get but I try to eliminate that car dependency as much as possible. I can at least get rid of the visual appearance of it being car dependent lol
