you can also spawn freinds avatar to place them n other directions so they will trow the spear too

i did it and the octopus came back

Well, yes. It doesn't permanently kill the octopus. It was designed to come back after battling to the death. You still get credit for the kill, if that's what you're worried about.

What is the purpose of defeating the octopus?

Considering how involved it is, the only time I've ever really NEEDED to kill the octopus was due to some quest requirement. It's certainly not something I do on a regular basis.
