My dad was a gamer! He used to have a gaming pc setup and we had many consoles over the years. My earliest memories are me and him playing the SNES together, he taught me how to play Mario Kart and Mario! We loved Nintendo, and whenever I would get new Zelda games he HAD to be the first one to try, and we'd play the first opening/tutorial levels together. TotK was the first Zelda came he never got to play, so in his memory I went on his Switch profile and played the opening part of TotK on his file. He loved pokemon too. We would get different versions so we could trade pkmn. He passed around the time Pokemon Go was really popping off, and he would literally take different routes on his way home so he could hit up pkmn spots and do raid bosses and stuff. When he was in the hospital he'd give me his phone so I could walk down the street and daily hit the spot there for him. My dad is why I'm so passionate about video games, and it was one of the things we really bonded with. He didn't care if I was his daughter playing games, he didn't need a son to connect with via his favorite hobby. He always got excited at trailers and new announcements. Honestly, the space has felt lonely without him. Gaming has never felt the same, but I'm so happy I got to share this cool fun thing with my best friend like that.

That was a beautiful reminiscence and touching tribute to your beloved and sadly dearly departed father. It warmed my heart as I soaked it all in and trying to envision your lived experience with him. Sorry for your heartbreakingly incredible loss! I'm 42 y/o now going on 43 soon enough and for far too complicated reasons to try and explain in a YT comment I haven't physically seen my father since Age 8, and last heard from him by way of a letter and/or X-mas card at Age 17 ½ circa 1999. I anticipated a letter upon and for my 18th birthday in April 2000, which never came, and that was that. Nowadays he'd be 84 y/o and while I've no way of truly knowing with any certainty my gut feeling is that he's likely deceased. Mom did a lot of filling in as a single parent and while she didn't share the passion for video games in the way I had she'd always watch me play 'em and buy 'em for me whenever able. The only NES game she truly liked and would actively attempt playing along with me in friendly challenges of was Paperboy. A memory I cherish still and know you'll hold onto your own forever. :)

My mom loved video games. She used to buy all the game guides for snes games and her and I would 100% ever game we rented before returning it. With that said, she also watched my kids open pokemon sword on Christmas, and when they started playing it she said, "is this game just talking!?" And it made me reflect on how she stopped at platformers. She had no concept of what am RPG was.

My Dad played Super Mario bros with me and my 2 bros back in the the 90s. Great memories on the NES. I can never forget when I woke up to go to the bathroom and saw lights on in the living room at like 1 am just going for it on whichever world was the snow one with the black sky. Up to that point, we hadn't made it that far, so this was legendary to my little 6 year old mind. He let me stay up with him until he got game over and then we went to sleep.

My dad always had a home computer because he worked with computers; but otherwise having actual games at home was a rarity. So he downloaded all sorts of emulators and games for me back in the day. This brings back so many memories about that Super Mario Land skin that was just Pikachu, Telefang being fan translated as Pokémon Jade and Diamond, and other stuff. Truly nostalgic.

QotD: My parents were in the “Pokemon is unchristian because it has evolution in it, and monsters are evil, and its dogfighting” type. When gen 3 came out they begrudgingly let me start playing the games. I think the only time they really had an earnest conversation about the series when I was a kid was them expressing surprise that I was having fun playing a black and white gameboy game in like 2006, and asking what was up with that.

QOTD - My mom didn’t play Pokémon, but she watched when I played for a few moments, asked what I was doing in the game, who the Pokémon were, and occasionally read a book next to me while I watched the anime with breakfast. She didn’t engage often but it is a core memory from childhood. While I don’t pontificate or reminisce about anything from childhood, nor do I ever feel nostalgic, I have a fondness for those calmer moments in life and Pokémon was a source for that. In case anyone is curious, my mother’s favorite Pokémon is Slowpoke.

"I'll do it, you kill monsters!" so i played super Castlevania while she did my book report - she got an A

Question of the daaaaay! My mom was playing Pokemon Scarlet while I was watching this video! She's 64, a proper baby boomer. I started her on Leaf Green, because she liked Super Mario RPG and the Zelda games, and I thought, if she tried it, that she might like it. I was right- now, it's nearly all she plays! I'm 26, and whrn I first got her playing Leaf Green a few years ago, it took a while before it clicked for her. She actually cried when a couple of her Pokemon fainted during the Brock fight. And she won! With Charmander! And she's been rolling along with it ever since!

My dad did play Pokemon a few times, but it was never seriously. It was one of those things were he'd ask to see the game and just walk around and fight some random battles, and hand it back. My parents also occasionally would play tekken or soul calibur with me and my siblings when we were kids (again they weren't playing seriously or anything like that, they just mashed random buttons). Other than that they never really played games that much, but they also were never really that judgemental when it came to us playing games either.

My mom never played Pokemon, but she LOVED Dr. Mario, and most Tetris-style falling block puzzle games. She got the game for us on Christmas the year it came out. She watched us play a 2-player match, and asked what was so fun about it. I made the mistake of teaching her to play. I "lost" my NES that day...😂 Btw, those freaky trees were swiped from the NES version of SNK's "Athena", along with most, if not all of the background and environment assets.

Answer of the day: No, despite my grandma essentially teaching me to play games from the original Gameboy to the Gamecube (even destroying my mom in a Gears of War 1v1 when she was fairly deep into her Alzheimer's years), she nor any other of the adults at that time even tried pokemon. My dad never really played anything beyond Halo CE & Splinter Cell, mom could never move beyond the first donkey kong country. Bonus Answer: Nope, I've never seen this before and I'm very thankful for that privilege.

7:06 I understand this episode was a month ago, but to answer: No. My mother was a still a Boomer (like I am sure Brett, Alex, and Ted's parents were) and she only gave Mario a shot a couple of times. She would especially sneak a couple of tries when I paused the game to leave the room and I would come back and have died a few times and she would act like "what happened". I think that curbed her off trying other games she saw me, especially play super well. Gen X parents are definitely different and a broader spectrum because half of them grew up with the Genesis of ARCADE and Atari and New gaming capable home computers they could afford as young adults in their youth. Atari was already old for Millennials, arcades were holding through the 90s. That wasn't the life for Boomer parents.

QotD: My mom was definitely an 80s gamer that fell into the adult vs kids dichotomy and stopped playing. She was def the one who played the NES we had in my super early childhood the most and loved (and finished) OG Mario, but by the time the SNES came out it was firmly "for the kids" (I got it for my 6th birthday I think?) and she really never played with us again until the Wii.

On the topic of parents who aren't "gamers", but play ONE game: My mom was vehemently against all video games for my brother and I when we were growing up in the 90s because she was afraid of us getting addicted to them. We still got into emulation on the family computer, though, and our cousin gave us his old Sega Genesis around the time the Dreamcast launched. My dad, however, is a gamer. He LOVED Wave Race 64 and Ocarina of Time, but the console was his alone. We weren't allowed to touch it until the PS2 was close to coming out. And by then, I was old enough to buy my own PS2. As far as I know, he still fires it up and plays Wave Race to this day even in his 60s. lol

She also never played video games with us and hated that we liked them. She'd still buy us most of the games we wanted because she wanted to be able to monitor what we were doing and to preach to us anytime something "demonic" came up.
