I can't even begin to describe how truly phenomenal you are!! I've been wanting to post a comment since I started following you in March. You have helped me tremendously with teaching online. You have the most wonderful rapport with your audience, your videos are incredibly well made AND helpful. You have a real gift obviously as a teacher, and then, relaying that to those of us in education through your videos. I'm very grateful for what you have done to help us, educators. Thank you so much for EVERYTHING!!

omg thank you so much!!!!! I did online teaching years ago in homeschooling but things have changed so much. I am retired and a supply teacher now and just got a six week assignment. Having never used google classroom or google meets the last two weeks have been long and tiring...... thank goodness my grade fours are very helpful and they even present their screens to show me what they see on their end. Today is Ketchup day for me! So learning about the rubric creating and the review button will definitely help. I wish I had seen your google form video the other day. I did manage to create my own and actually had my students upload their work, which their regular teacher thought they might not be able to do. Thanks again

I love using the To Review section. It keeps me organized. I also really like the chrome extension mote, because it allows me to leave voice comments. That helps my students that are not able to read as well, still get feedback.

I have taught public school for 30+ years. Constantly upgrading and changing to make things relevant for class and students was so challenging. If I were teaching today , I would have to PAY you for your wonderful ,detailed and just magnificent classroom tips for teachers. You are just amazing as a young teacher. To all other new and veteran teachers, try to emulate or do some of these ideas. If you can't do it all ( as everyone is different) do what you can to enhance the learning of the students. I can't imagine any student getting bored in such an elightening class with a pocket full of new ideas and consistent learning segments. I am learning from you every time I enter your you tube. It helps me enhance my real estate teaching. It's not just elementary. Thanks a bunch. Trust me when I say, you are such a help to all educators. Please keep doing what you are doing and you do it with such a vibrant attitude and lovely smile. You love your work.

Thanks for this! I really liked Tip #2 and the comments you chose to use with students, especially where you let them know whether the assignment is done or if they should go back to make changes. Here were the comments Michelle Ferré uses with her classes. I plan to borrow and modify slightly for my students. 1. "Great job on this assignment! Thank you for working so hard! This assignment is now complete." 2. "Thank you for working so hard! If you want to improve your grade, you can make changes and resubmit." 3. "I need you to go back and check your work before I can grade this assignment. Resubmit when you are done so I can grade your work!" Thanks again for all these time saving tips!

Another tip If you have an iPad + Apple Pencil: when you have the final version of students’ assignments, you can edit as a pdf and use the Apple Pencil to write on the pdf and the save it and your students will see your corrections. I love using this method for writings

I also like to use "View Your Work" in the Student's Classwork section. It shows the assignments, the missing work, and returned graded work. I can have parent/student/teacher conferences with families to show my students' progress. On our Wednesday's (which is our intervention day) I can do a check for missing work with my students. I let them present their screen to me, then select missing work, have them click on the missing assignment and pull up a tab for each missing assignment. That way when they work asynchronously their tabs are up and they can work to finish their assignments. Presenting their work is done in my other class, one at a time. I'm able to monitor the class while I have my assignment checks individually. I can answer questions of my students who are having difficulty with completing assignments. Whew! Your awesome Mrs. Emerson! I look forward to your videos and refer them to my coworkers on the regular! You know your stuff and I so appreciate your expertise! Thank you and keep striving!

Another thing I do when grading google slides - I use a png of a red X with a transparent background to mark incorrect answers. (I just keep it copied so I can just quickly paste it.) Then, it is easy to scan the slides in the side panel and count up the red X's to get the grade. (I teach 8th grade science.)

Thanks for your tips. They are v useful. We have been using Google Classroom since lockdown. Lots of children do their assignments in their copybooks or notebooks and upload screenshots of their work for us to see. We have been highlighting areas on their work and leaving comments in the little comment boxes and return to the pupils. This week we found out that the pupils are not seeing those comments when they receive the notification by gmail. Where can the pupils see this information???

Michelle - strange question - when you are in To-Review and you have "reviewed" and graded and are ready to move to your next assignment inside of google - is there a "fast way" to go back to the to-review list of assignments that you were previously looking at. It seems that I can't use my back button. Not sure if it is a flaw within google or I am creating more work for myself and doing something wrong. I seem to find myself constantly having to go back to to-review ("very clicky"). Do you have any helpful hints? or recommendations? Thanks from NY! :)

I always open up the assignment I want to grade in a new tab. That reduces the amount if "back" click and load wait time. I right click on the number in the "to be graded" column and go at it. Once I've returned items, I move back to the other tab and select the next item while GC is processing. Very little downtime.

Also, quick question. If a student turns in an assignment and I grade it, do I then have to "return" it for them to see their grade? I'm in the habit of grading assignments when they are due, even if they haven't pressed that "turn in " button. For those, I know I have to "return", but what about the others? Thank you again. The "To Review" section I never knew about and that will help me TODAY! But I do have a question. I like the idea of ketchup and pickles. However, I teach HS and I was wondering if you think that this calls certain kids out over and over again and would lower motivation? Or do you think it would motivate them to be able to pick a fun activity? Secondly, are we "legally" allowed to tell other students who has and has not turned in assignments? Or is just their grades? OR am I just crazy?

I was just going to comment the same - I love the idea to keep track like that, but I wouldn't want to share the names of kids with missing work with the rest of the class.

As a community college instructor, I can tell you- As far as I know, that’s actually prohibited under FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.) I cannot say anything in class that would let students know about a classmate’s academic performance. A student’s performance is confidential and between you and the student; if he or she fails a quiz, nobody else in the class should know that. (In F2F classes, for example, I always return tests folded lengthwise, so no one seated next to the kid can see the score on the test paper.)
