1:10 I’m no expert but assuming they’re similar to the Volvo IPS system, both pods rotate independently when under joystick control. This is how you can move the boat sideways without a bow thruster. So the dissimilar angle of the two pods was probably just the last position they were in as the vessel was manoeuvred into the haul out cradle.

We own a Riviera 5000 sport yacht and I think k it was because they where using the joystick to move it onto the straps to lift it up

Starship Trooper is correct. Each pod may be directed independently of each other which provides greater maneuvering efficiency and up to 30% greater fuel economy, while increasing top speed and cruising speed.

Now they have pod Drive for Outboards in the Mercury new 600 horsepower outboard

That’s a very clever system-still trying to figure out how those props spin in opposite directions connected to what seems like one shaft?-but that’s ok…I’m still fascinated by the way a fax machine works too so😆

There are 2 shafts, an inner shaft and an outer shaft. The opposite rotating props are connected to one or the other shaft. This concept is very popular now and even outboards are using this design.

They have Outboards with the dual prop system now. You would have to think it takes a complicated gearbox to spin in opposite directions

@@AskCaptainChris I figured that after I asked…very cool design.how do you like the maneuverability compared to the standard props and rudders ?
@AskCaptainChris3 жыл бұрын
John M with practice you can make them walk sideways without a bow thruster.

Great video like always sir, but I think I'd avoid these types of drives for the reliability and maintenance requirements. I just called you from here in Los Angeles as you suggested, regarding electrolysis and erosion that I'm seeing on my boat now, and would love to watch something from your list of videos if you have any recommendations. And thanks again for taking some time and making the recommendations over the phone, I'll update you when I can.

It looks to me that the props are: Starboard- clockwise in front, counterclockwise rear. Port- counterclockwise in front & clockwise in rear.

Port and starboard side look identical to me.

Given the choice ,which would you prefer?
@AskCaptainChris3 жыл бұрын
I prefer old school because I can do the repair and maintenance work myself.

Would prefer Zeus for aft facing props but Cummins and Zeus never got their act together. So Volvo is the only POD drive that works.

Good Sunday morning. I hope you had a good time in Miami yesterday. I don't want to sound like the village idiot. And I'll never be able to afford something like this. This setup looks like a money pit as it ages. Sitting in the water all the time if a seal leaked magor malfunction lots of $$$ . Love your channel. Smokey 🤩🤩🤩

Yes, they are Hi Tech and do require Factory Authorized Technicians to do the maintenance work on them. I train new owners of POD Drive Systems often. Notice there are NO rudders, it takes a little time to become comfortable with docking boats with PODs. Once you learn the different procedures they are easy to operate.

Boats are holes in the water into which you pour money. Pods develop leaks and require rebuilding which is expensive. The ease of use is such that mega cruise ships have pod drives also. In docking and other maneuvering they are worth their weight in gold . Pod systems also shrink the engine room and increase livable space which is helpful. I like the pod system, but when you have a grounding accident it is expensive. Sweet Melissa is the way to go.

@@robertfrost1683 I agree. These pods are basically glorified outdrives that have been used on Ski boats and roundabouts for years. They have a rubber boot on the back. Of course I'm sure you are familiar with them. Hope you have a great Sunday Mr. Frost.
