For example, a vision, illustration, draping, pattern making, cutting, sewing, and finish work. Nothing works better than the creative mind and hands...period. Thank you, Zoe, for your insight.

Thank you for discussing AI in fashion. I really enjoyed the story about your friend from college who refused to let a job take away her self respect. I'm on camp 'AI is a tool we can use to improve how we live' and I feel this video helped me affirm that with fashion design.

Copying the patterns of existing clothing is actually efficient, I am only against it if its used to duplicate the exact original designs and sold like its an "original"... In fashion school we were encouraged to do this so we could understand the fit and construction of garments, I have to say this process is actually helpful. I also remember when I interned and one of the senior pattern cutters used the jeans they had on, to start off the pattern cutting, then changed it up. The end design looked nothing like the original jeans! My lecturer once said all jeans would have come from a copy of Levi's jeans at some point, which is a valid point to make. I am also more open minded to using AI for initial design research, as it can really save some time and you can jump straight into making the actual garments. And I totally agree with you, fashion needs creative vision, no AI could ever compare to a skilled fashion designer!
@zoehongteaches Жыл бұрын
Yes, and I should have clarified that using base patterns is efficient but this brand in particular is notorious for being in the news for knocking designer brands off.

Wow, you did point out what AI cannot do and we need to keep that in mind. Funny when the internet started many designer houses were afraid that their designs were going to be copied much quicker because the new medium and as you mentioned we are still having runway presentations. Shein has entered the chat 😅😂 Big brands are doing "fine", but small brands/designers are being murdered (metaphorically).
@alexanderpons92468 ай бұрын
@@FridelainYes sadly its true, even from the producing aspect a small business can't compete price wise as the amount of fabric one get is nothing compared to the bigger companies as SHEIN as well as the manufacturing aspect. However all a small business do is create original garments.

Great video Zoe! I think there are definitely some positive aspects of AI, but these ethical discussions are really important for us to have now, so that we can set the tone for how AI is used responsibly in the fashion industry as well as other industries.

I appreciate your take on these things, Zoe! My issue with using Chat GPT or AI is that - as a creative person - I want control over what I create. As much as I've tried to use it (for writing blog or social media posts, or creating workshops) - I'm not able to use it because I can't let go. I want to my words to be MINE, crafted by me. I will, however, use it to see if Chat GPT comes up with an idea I missed. (Possibly like your calculator analogy...) So I can see AI being used by other various creatives in a similar manner, just to see if they missed something. But if someone is truly creative and proud of their own work, I'd think they'd want to put their own unique stamp on their creations. I don't see someone genuinely, through-and-through creative relinquishing control to AI.

Yeah, I think most people will still be editing these renderings to suit their own tastes. I don't find it any different than a CD tweaking a designer's flat before getting a first sample made.

I studied fashion design in a very low quality school (I'm Venezuelan) and I also work as a copywriter. I am a very cerebral person, so the process of creating the concept and then turning that into designs was my favorite part, I was never big on actually sewing. And just like with my work as a copywriter, a computer cannot compete with the capacity of a human to bring elements from all over the place into a coherent look that carries on for an entire collection or with a human brain capable of finding the right angle needed to communicate a particular message. Do they save time with the research? Yes. Can they take your job as someone with an artistic side? Hell no. Creativity is a human thing.

Oh, thank you for this! Yes, AI is a tool, and yes, it has uses, but yes, yes, and yes. Interestingly enough, one of the other discussions I've seen floating around is the use of AI and Blockchain to help validate supply chains in the world of sustainable fashion, to help make the supply/production chain more traceable, and that's something I'm really hoping does start happening!

Sure. What about textile design or digital illustration? Where Ai is not part of the process but the result itself? Today I was told I am just complaining about it, that there are always new competitors or someone doing better than you, that artists will find other ways to thrive and market their art, so Ai doesn’t have an impact basically on what they’re doing and that they should just smile and move on! I don’t agree at all. In those 2 cases, it would partially replace human-generated art! It should be a tool, GREAT, but where is ART? The real one, not a bunch of images edited by an algorithm which resembles it! SMH!
