This week I build a new sole in the wheelhouse of MV Poem. 3-1/2" lower than the original so now I can stand up!

Douglas fir is always nice Whether structurally or on display. However, never do ever discount That missteps cause a delay! That ledger was an easy fix. It only goes to show That patience with oneself will lead To a good sole in the bow. Mahogani oiling with this new technique Was an experiment, done with suspension. But since it seems to have done the trick, We can say it's a clever invention! More members are welcome, fig beer is good! Thanks to donators as a whole! And in the end we all can be sure That the word of the week is "SOLE"!

What an entertaining Channel. For reasons inexplicable, this episode was especially therapeutic. Start with a tree, end up with a viable boat, laced with the tension of imminent doom if Peter removes the wrong board ( ha ha just kidding we know he wont do that, but I would). That "oversize lump" of an engine has a special funk of its own, a bit of an orphan from the era when all focus was on v/8's. I would be inclined to keep the thing, love it much just to show the kids of today (who are smitten with exotic inline sixes) just how well the ol' chugger can do.

Thanks fort he kind words. I too have degree of appreciation for the old chev 6. But it can’t overcome my disdain for a gasoline engine in a wooden cruiser. one that is also much too big and leaks oil into the bilge. A splendid engine this would be for a classic Chris Craft runabout of fish boat.

I have watched your channel for years and I greatly admire your work. You are very talented and don't cut corners when doing the repairs to the boats. I especially admire your ability to stay positive when taking on large projects and having to work in a small space with limited tools but with all of that said, I cannot agree with some of the work that you are doing on Poem. I love that boat and in the words of my father " if it ain't broke, don't fix it." I am sorry to be negative but I think that you should restore it just the way that it is. It is a beautiful boat just the way it stands and just needs maintenance. Please don't be angry, I am just expressing my opinion and I am by no means an expert at anything. I will continue to like and subscribe to your channel no matter how you proceed. Your friend and loyal viewer, JOE
@TravelsWithGeordie
@TravelsWithGeordie Жыл бұрын
Thank you Joe! I appreciate your love and concern for Poem. I hope I can reassure you that all the stuff I’m removing is not original and quite shoddy. The boat was completely refitted inside in the early 50’s with cheap luan plywood cabinets. Poem was built in 1938, before plywood and her interior would have been spectacular panelled solid wood, much like the doors. I can’t be certain, but I also believe the helm was not centred as it was for the last 50 years. and then there are areas that are just plain rotten and horrible like the old sole and other non original structure. Now it’s true that I will use lots of plywood in my refit. however I intend to recreate the look and feel of prewar cabinetry. I’m glad you enjoy the show and will stick around despite your concerns. I hope that over time you will feel I have chosen an honourable path for this beautiful little boat.

The ledger boards you cut to length need to be shortened so the sides of the hull can move inward as significant waves hit. With them almost touching the inside of the planks. You might sink the boat at the worst possible time. Old screw and nail hulls. Non galvanized fastners. Is there a way to drill them partly oversize to remove any rust from the hole and seal the hole with caulking. Taping a screw to the driver. Putting a dab of caulking on the hole. Spinning the screw backwards to push the caulking deep into the hole.

@@TravelsWithGeordie poem is not heavy ribs and stringers like tally ho or arabella. An inch is probably enough clearance on either end of any beams that are ending at the inside of the planks. Worst case scenerio. I have seen the big weather that can kick up. Grew up spending summers on Lummi island. Spend 22 years working with a friend on his wooden 104' powerboat. An ex army rescue hull from WWII. Built by stephens brothers boatyard in Stockton cal in 1943. I loaned my personal photos to the owner and he lost them. Twin 6-71s. 3 to 1 twin disc transmissions with air shifters. 32x30 3 bladed props. 3 rudders. Outer two off a 165' mine sweeper. Helm hard over. Both engines a head the bow made a 40 foot circle while the stern swung like a baseball bat.

My boat was moored at a marina close to Vic Franck’s boat building yard,in the boat shop on a cradle was a small cruiser that looked very similar to Poem,it was said to be built and owned by Vic Franck,is sat inside the shed for years.

Nice work on the sole framing. My lesson of the week, using painters tape as a measuring reference. Peter, where do you come with these brilliant time saving hacks?

Heh, thanks, I dunno, necessity? Be careful with the tape / chaulkline trick. The tape can end up slightly curved if you’re sloppy with the start angle.
