Poetry Marathon 2009: Geoffrey Hill

The Serpentine Gallery Poetry Marathon was an ambitious two-day poetry event taking place in London during Frieze Art Fair week and featuring unique performances from leading poets, writers, artists, philosophers, scholars and musicians.

Hill reads two poems from Tenebrae: 'Terribilis Est Locus Iste' and 'A Pre-Raphaelite Notebook'. He then reads seven poems from Speech! Speech! (sections 92, 93, 94, 96, 114, 115 and 116). He finishes with 'To the High Court of Parliament' (November 1994). Throughout he is reading from his Selected Poems, (Penguin 2006).

I don't care how great stature he enjoys, I don't like the way he reads. It's too "poetic."
