How far can Tesla go after 0% battery and what happens when it die? I drove the Tesla Model X to see how long it would last.

The battery cannot charge at high speed when is empty or very low, same when is very high getting close to 100%. Reason is simple, the battery is at the most unstable state when they are on the extremes. Once it is closer to the middle (50%), the battery relaxes and can take a big punch. This is why it takes longer to charge at the extremes but charges very fast when is between 20% and 80% (approximately). If you want your battery to last very long (lifespan of the battery, not the charge) you want to keep it within that range all the time. In fact, for the longest lifespan, you would want to keep it between 40% and 60% ALL THE TIME. Of course that would be nonsense, but it is the way all these batteries work (same with cell phones, laptops, tablets, etc). While going to extremes a few times during the lifespan of the battery won’t do a permanent damage, you do want to stay away from doing that as much as possible. Never let the battery go under 10%. I would suggest to make that number 20% instead. And when charging, charge it up to 80% and no more than 90% (Tesla recommendation is 90% and only to 100% when going on a long trip). Until battery technology improves drastically, we will have to keep doing this. Hopefully within a few years we will see a breakthrough, and eventually (I give it about 10 years from now) we will have batteries that can charge in a few minutes, give two to three times more power and don’t need to be worrying about percentage, just charge it to 100% every time and go on with your life. And probably by then Tesla will have vehicles that go 0 to 60 MPH in under one second 😜 Cheers

@Neptonium 青, yep and the fact I couldn't believe is that he couldn't even get into his vehicle. I can't believe they're making $50K-$100K+ vehicles like these without contingencies against the very thing it's based off of "being operated solely by electricity" and the fact IF you experienced some issue of running out of power, you can't do something as simple as getting your items out of your car which a backup mechanical system such as a door key cylinder and mechanical handle would allow as it's been used for decades, just like the combustion engine itself. Maybe this should be something Elon and his engineering team should be implementing. It really makes no sense, it's like installing windows in a vehicle with no provision to lower them so you can pull up to drive-thru's for food, banking transactions or just speak to someone without opening the door and anyone who has ever had an electric window motor fail, knows how problematic it is to not be able to lower the window just as our host here indicated how problematic it is to lose complete power to the vehicle and not be able to open a door etc.

That slow charge at first is because your cells are below 3 volts. Lithium chargers usually slow charge until cells get above 3 volts. You basicly have around 8200 little batteries in it. The 18650 cells like whats in a vape or rechargable flashlight. Each cell has to be protected.

Very concerning that if you are out of juice that you can't get the charge port door open, and you make a good point about locking in your cell phone. Besides all that, what would happen if you are down to zero and you are INSIDE the car? Would you be able to get out?
@TheRealLink

There is a mechanical back-up lock on the door aside from the power electric locks so you'd just use that method to get out.

to everyone saying "we can get 33 more kilometers" it all depends on quality and condition of the battery, vehicle weight, speed, accessories being used, temperature outside. Also remember, batteries destroy themselves when they are really low. I bet that "extra" below 0% is the protection for the battery to not drive it to (real 0%) all the time. Batteries are happiest between ~10% and ~90%. The test just slightly shortened the life of his car battery. It's also good he didn't leave it low for long periods as they will speed up the degradation. Also, just because you CAN go below 0% don't rely on it... and if you do it a lot, you will certainly pay for it in the long run with shortened battery life.

0% isn't empty as there is a buffer but this should be done to calibrate the computer so it know the top and bottom end of the battery because charging from 5% or higher up to 80% over time will cause it to go out of balance amd even more so with LFP

When this type of battery is been used till get completely done the battery has memory and the full use of the power will be reduced little by little if you keep doing that sooner you'll find that the battery won't give the same performance or miles, though they have a limiter control to keep some power in them that's why the system start warning you to connect it

That steering wheel looks awkward when making a lock to lock turn. A battery is not designed to be discharged to "0"%. The "0"% on an electric car maybe 5% to allow some emergency travel, like a petrol car gives a low fuel warning with 10L of fuel left.I wonder how the street supply can handle a bunch of electric cars charging in peak usage times say on one street? They have to compete with cooking and heating loads, hope the sub station can handle it.

So touching the „do not touch“ reserve doesnt kill the battery. Nice to know. I bet tesla added that much of a reserve to prevent the battery from beeing damaged and to not have teslas running out of juice on highways.

Reasons why not everything can be electrically driven, you had to pry the charge port door open. My car you just push on the door and it pops open. And the charge door lock is driven by the 12 volt battery and not the traction battery.

Seriously, who in their right mind thought a motorized charge port or electronic door latches were a good idea?? Especially a motorized charge port with no place to grap to open it by hand?? What’s wrong with the designs we used for the fuel door in an ICEV, where you A. reach into a divot in the door to open it (my preferred way), 2, push the door in to pop it out (push latch), or even III, pull a lever next to the driver’s seat with a cable attached?

With chargeable batteries when running the battery to very low level below 10% it can reach a zone where it can become unstable for its polarization. If too far down the battery may not be able to be charged. The reason is some internal resistance is required to have break over current for polarizing the electrodes. If the battery is at true zero charge state if can go to reverse polarity, and thus be destroyed. When charging the battery system, the greater the charge current the more internal heat from the electrodes. To get the most life out of a chargeable battery it is best to keep the battery topped up. To have a decent compromise between battery life and usage, it is best to charge above 60% battery level. I am sure the Tesla and other EVs have a protection where when there is indication of the battery being dead internally it may have about 20% to allow stability of the battery chemistry, and to allow for sustaining the software/firmware and preferences in the vehicle’s computer modules. The deeper the charge cycles on Lithium-ION batteries the more reduced the lifespan. Lithium-ION batteries have an average of 350 to 450 full charge cycles and maintain near 100% performance for up to about 3 years. At using the battery level to 50% level the amount of charge cycles can be doubled. At 8 years old with average type use charging at 50% level it is possible to exceed 1500 charge cycles, but will have about 80% performance at this point. Even though the battery could be down in performance, after charging the indication may show 100% because the voltage will be okay. But, the internal current of the battery will be reduced, and thus will make the range decay more rapidly.

Is normal that some cases the BMS disconnects the battery to protect it so is only running on 12v but even so some features may not work properly. Advisable to not close completely the car and more importantly not reach zero...
