I have been collecting recordings of Chopin for over 50 years, and, believe me, this young man's playing drives me back tp the score again and again, and I see that he highlights what so many others miss. There are mistakes galore here. but I love it. The critics at this Chopin competition had their ears in the past. This is a revolutionary breath of fresh air. Some in the jury gave him a zero, to eliminate him. Argerich was right. Juries have sometimes decided before they have heard a note!

Mrs Argerich was compltely right to leave the jury.Pogorelich had the sacred fire.He is approaching the score as we have been told the 19 century masters did, that is all, plain and simple. It is just a matter of feeling and taste...Who cares about the false notes and his personal approach to tempo? I prefer fire and passion instead of perfection, you will never find both simultaneously in any performer.

This man is an amazing pianist! Way ahead of everybody else in time. I was there when he played this Sonata. The entire hall was totally amazed by his playing. Hey, you out there who is criticizing this great pianist! Why don't you sit down at the piano and play like that AND take your chances with breaking rules as far as interpretation is concern!!! It takes guts to do that and in the meantime you can experience something amazing like the end of this Chopin Sonata No2 1st movement.

I had the privilege of hearing this actual performance in Warsaw in 1980. It still sounds great and really musical. There was a LOT of misinformation and hype in the press about who in the jury was for him and who against him. I remember interviewing him probably the following year in London - it was in a hotel near Buckingham Palace - the bed was round - I've never seen one since! He was a friendly and charming person.

I've been having a love affair all my life with this Sonata. When I first heard it as a child, I felt so close to it I slept with the score under my pillow! And then along came Pogorelich with his wonderful interpretation! He never fails to reach me and inspire me. What a blessing to hear him here. Rightly so he caused such a sensation at this competition - incredible! Phillip Wilcher

Ivo Pogorelich was born in Belgrade in 1958 as son of a musician. He received his first piano lessons at the age of seven and went to Moscow at the age of twelve to study at the Central Special Music School and then at the Tchaikowsky Conservatory. In 1976 he began intensive studies with the renowned pianist and teacher Aliza Kezeradze, with whom he was married from 1980 until her untimely death in 1996. Mme. Kezeradze was able to transmit the spirit and matter of the school of Beethoven and Liszt, the tradition of the Liszt-Siloti school, originated in Vienna and than carried through to the Conservatory of St. Petersburg, flourishing towards the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th. Century. Pogorelich´s sound, concerts and recordings pay homage to this exceptionally refined, visionary, and truly revolutionary woman, who so lovingly made Pogorelich a unique artist of genius. Ivo Pogorelich won the first prize at the Alessandro Casagrande Competition at Terni (Italy) in 1978 and the first price at the Montreal International Music Competition in 1980. In October of the same year he entered the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw where, when prevented from participating in the final contest as a soloist with the orchestra, a fierce controversy resulted in the renowned argentinian pianist Martha Argerich, a member of the jury, protesting and leaving the competition, joined by other members of the jury panel, with the words “He is a genius”. The New York Times once wrote “He played each note exactly, with such a feeling, such expression, he was an entire orchestra- it was as if he played 200 years ahead of our time”. In this spirit Ivo Pogorelich is known today as a poet of the instrument. Ivo Pogorelich is not only an artist of the highest caliber, discipline and musicianship, but the archetype of the modern artist, the isolated and courageous master, who finds his own way to new heights of expression, no matter the prejudices or the barriers of misunderstanding raised against him. He stands alone at the beginning of a new epoch like a prophet, mapping the routes that art would take. Pogorelich´s cathartic and mystical sound, is concerned with the ultimate mysteries that transcend this world. His grandiose, colossal and majestic art, symbolizes the struggle of the human soul to find release from the bonds of its material body. His exquisite and overwhelming music continues to echo throughout the entire performance and beyond, so the action is at once momentary, eternal and complete. Pogorelich´s interpretations are indescribably beautiful and irresistible. His sound is pure poetry and extremely emotional, yet entirely unsentimental. We are hypnotized by his new and radical naturalness, by his nobility, dignity, severity and sobriety; transporting us to states of wonder, ecstasy, meditation, love and compassion. -- Sound and Silence, Life and Death, Time and Space; collapse into the Eternal moment of Infinity. -- ----------------------- "you have to get into the phycological frame of mind in which composers wrote their works in order to discover its secrets. virtuosity comes from the greek origin virtue. original is finding the origin Gaudi said. rachmaninov had arthritis at the end of his life, he was so weak that his sound was very short, that is the reason he played fast, to fill the vacuum. if you have long sound you are in command to achieve clarity and the hypnotic sound between the notes. the problem was always the conflict and the difference between the absolute and the relative quality. beauty in music is like in diamonds, the purest diamond in the world is the Koh-i-Noor, it is the absolute beauty to which others with relative beauty are compared. work as hard as a galley slave. one should always try as much as possible to rediscover music as though one is hearing it for the first time, searching everywhere for new meanings and new depths. the highest function of the artist is to release the spirituality and the emotional immediacy that lie within the score. sound becomes metaphysical only when you have completely explored all physical possibilities. you should explore until reaching the absurd. music takes you to another universe of eternity that remains with you after the concert is finished." Ivo Pogorelich. ------------------------------------

Predivno...uvek kada slušam ovu savršenu interpretaciju pomislim kako su mladom Ivi Pogorelicu nepravedno oduzeli zasluženo mesto...maestralno izvođenje Sopena, na njegov način. Tada smo bili Yugoslavia i ovo predstavljanje jedne divne zemlje bilo je na ponos svih nas!

I cannot put into words how special 1:15 to 2:40 is to me. It has that dream-like quality that you never want to end. I think thats whats so magical about Chopin, never over doing or leaving out substance. Those subtle changes in harmony and the effect of nuances, the build up and climax. God i love Chopin

I think Pogorelich is a composer's pianist. What I mean by that is that he plays music from the inside out. He peeks behind the printed page to seek and reveal the many hidden beauties inherent in a score and for that, I will always love him and applaud him. Phillip Wilcher

I had read several articles about Pogorelich in the early 80s without having ever heard him play. I read everything I could find but I avoided listening to him. Why? Because I did not want the "ideal" I had formed of him to be an illusion. Eventually I heard him and he was everything I hoped he would be and every bit the genius Martha Argerich said he was. His interpretations may not please some, but everything he does resonates for me beyond measure. God bless him!

wonderful tonal experimentation, changes of colour, new insight into music. He makes the piano sing in a very unique way, and for all those who would claim the piano is a percussion instrument, this man, combined with chopin, proves you wrong. It is an instrument not of any class or belonging, but of the unique expression of the soul.

Pogorelich came into the room all furious and flushed. we fell into silence. Emil Gostunedzov, his hair-stylist , began to edge for the bathroom door . Anette Brousset was quick to nod at him, so Ivo just went wild. It was Aida night at the Terme di caracalla. edith Piaf was not yet dead. We all just held our breath. Martha Argerich even whispered a 'porteño' joke. Thanks Pogo. You are passion. You are New Romantic. visage. Ultravox. Siouxsie's Budgie. Nasdrave's nemesis. Revlon revers you.

Samuel Gorovich once told me Pogorelich was the cat's whiskers... I was not prone to taking his advice as I truly thought Pogo's rise to fame was pure glitterdust. The media has a way of warping reality. Now, many years later i agree... Pogorelich is a wonder!

How kind of you to respond to my post and bring me back to this most memorable moment in musical history! Pogorelich is for me like the Nureyev of the keyboard. Everything about his playing is so articulately cultivated and choreographed. I understand well you being upset back then, but there's no need to be upset now. Like you, I love his playing. I first saw this video 5 years ago, and thought his interpretation is little eccentric. But soon I practiced this piece and began to love this sonata. And when I saw this video once more and see the score, I was surprised that he played almost exactly as in the score. except playing 1:17 with mf and playing funeral march too fast, and overall, I think he played this sonata very well in this competition. And I think argerich was right. He should be in the finals. His 4th movement finale is really amazing.. wow... Now I have his entire movement sonata video in this competition. But I can't upload it because of copyright infringement... But someone uploaded his second and third movement in this youtube recently. You can easily find them.. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3rTfJJtqJWnqbs here and kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGqnkn1nqdlofas here.

IMO, it's not about ears, eyes or tempo.. It's all about heart, an expression that comes from inside the heart may take many shapes. One's bashing is another one's song. Some smooth and deep, some others more fast, violent or even catchy. That's the fantastic deal about music and art, it can express many things from different artists. All through the same act. I find this Pogorelić version innovating and exciting. Although my favorite version of this piece is Rubinstein's.

It is by no means horrible. This is a very fresh and vigorous interpretation. At times he is rhythmically imprecise ("vague," as you put it) with the left hand, but in general this is such a new conception of the work very well executed, indeed original enough to warrant Argerich's defending him. I can see why you might call this interpretation monstrous, or even in some places vague (compared to the normal way of hopping through those long sweeping lines), but not horrible.
