Pohoiki Beach Update, Hawaii's Newest Volcanic Black Sand Beach

I made a trip down to Pohoiki (Isaac Hale Beach Park) to check on the progression of sand that inundated the bay following the 2018 eruption of Kilauea. Volcanic sand was driven by the predominate tides into Pohoiki Bay from the ocean entry just to the north. Overall the beach has been stable over the last couple years with no significant changes to the size and shape of the beach.

Yep, I was there about 5 days ago, walked all the way from Seaview to get there from the nearest bus stop! I got there early in the morning when the air was a bit nippy. Seriously, at that moment you couldn't have dragged me out of that pool next to the boat ramp! It's SOOOO nice.

I've walked on that beach. It looks cool. But its like walking on gravel. Not fun. The big island is still my most favorite island. Kilauea is there. Thats why. See you soon. Mahalo nui loa!🤙

poor haoles cant be bothered to walk on lava rock maybe your not made for it and should head back to the mainland

@johnsacrimoni8899 Yes, I get your point. I live in Seattle. It's cold here. I wear shoes all of time. My feet aren't used to the rough Rocky beach. I wouldn't want to live in Hawaii, especially now that wealthy land investors are getting so aggressive about gentrification. Don't be surprised if all of a sudden something really bad happens and then the government gives you a tiny check and a one-way plane ticket to the mainland. Are you still laughing?

I think they came through with bulldozers after the lava flow and turned it into gravel

Lava flow stopped their in 2018. back at the summit now

The lava when it enters the ocean creates explosions of lots of varying sizes of debris, down to little glass filaments that quickly weathered in the ocean

The sand is the result of lava entering the ocean nearby. The interaction of hot lava with cold seawater breaks the lava into smaller pieces, which are continually tumbled by the waves, making them even smaller. They are transported on current to inlets along the coast, creating some of the newest black sand beaches on the planet. Aloha!

Sands not going anywhere. Or Atleast thats there excuse to not dredge out our existing boat ramp that is hurting peoples livelihoods. Crock of shit. Place sucks for surfing now without that pay. You just get swept out. So dangerous now. And there no good breaking areas anymore
