From the 1920s to around the 1970s, by which point the hazards of frequent x-rays to both the x-rayee and people around the machine had become well known, a device called a "shoe-fitting fluoroscope" was actually used at many shoe stores to see how feet, particularly children's toes, fit into shoes. So decades ago you could have actually done it! Just not safely.

It’s still not great obviously because pregnant woman are told to avoid xrays but then told to have a mammogram every year..it’s bad for the baby but has not negative effect on the person? I think prevention is smart but I don’t know if I trust some of the strange things we are told to do..sometimes you just have to do what feels right for you..I’m not suggesting avoiding the doctor but I couldn’t even have an X-ray when I lost a filling pregnant..
