I'm not in ballet but I can seriously appreciate the art of this. In my dance style (fusion bellydance) we have to customize our costumes since many of us will make our own, but I just pay someone since I can't sew well enough for stage ready. But customizing your own shoes on a weekly or monthly basis? Impressive. I love the dance world and its diversity.

Or sewing elastic on zills or beading fringe when the fringe inevitably falls off 😂I know a bunch of American Cabaret bellydancers, sewing supplies and baby pins are essential tools! But it truly is wild how quickly pro ballet dancers go through shoes. The sheer strength it has to take to crack a shoe with just your pointed feet!

Wow thats so cool I didnt know u make the costumes?! Ours(dancers costumes) are pre-made and ready to go! Since alot of us have like 6-7 dances 😂

@@robloxadventures5495 yep! Honestly, some dancers spend as much time at JoAnn Fabrics and their sewing rooms as they do in the studio. 😁 I can make some belts and skirts, but I'm not about to attempt making my own dance bra. That's a costume malfunction just waiting to happen. 😅

I haven't done ballet since I was 5 so my most constructive comment here is that a) this is fun to watch, I love watching people who are experts in a super niche area tell us if what we see on social media is bs or not (obviously cups are Bad), and b) Josephine that green shirt is PERFECT, it looks so good on you

You would probably enjoy twosetviolin too, they’re two goofy violinists who enjoy bringing classical music to the masses, and enjoy reacting to compilations of like violin in movies and cartoons - they go into detail about the ins and outs of violin playing and it’s super entertaining to learn about, and I love listening to the music samples throughout.

Ok don't judge me but I actually de-shank my pointe shoes basically just dance on just the box and once that starts to get soft I then put the shank back in to make the shoe last longer. Also I have a friend who wears an anchor maker so I feel fir her knowing that the maker is retiring. Thankfully when I do wear Freeds I wear fish.

As always, I adore Josephine and 'The Pointe Shop'! ❤️ PLEASE, Please, please, 🙏🏻please, remember to ALWAYS SEE A PROFESSIONAL FITTER - like Josephine!😊❤️* ☆☆☆ESPECIALLY☆☆☆ if you are getting your first pair of Pointe shoes!! It's the most magical, wonderful, special moment on a dancer's path in ballet! *(who, honestly, I wish I'd had her when I started out and throughout my time as a dancer!) However, it can also be the worst if you're not being guided through the process by someone like Josephine! Seriously, it's a huge moment, and there's way more that goes into buying Pointe shoes than most think - not trying to be a drama queen, but it is that important. You could end your dreams by not seeing someone who knows what they're doing and, hopefully, works with physical therapists and an Orthopedic group or Dr. Sorry for rambling on and on! Lolol 😀! Love 💗 The Pointe Shop and Josephine!! Very Respectfully, Lady Anne (Jessica M. Kandal, PhD)

I have to agree with you. As a ‘returning to pointe dancer’ in my 40’s a barrage of factors (including a connective tissue disorder and an undiagnosed common primary immunodeficiency) came together that led to two minuscule stress fractures in my 3rd and 4th metatarsals on my R foot. I honestly would not have even noticed them, had I not contracted a minor skin infection that then became systemic (bacteraemia leading then to septicaemia, which seeded in these tiny stress fractures and turned into osteomyelitis). Some poor management by the initial treating hospital and orthopaedic team had me mobilising too early, with them thinking it was cellulitis, and then upon proper imaging they over corrected and kept me in a cam boot for far too long, refusing physiotherapy treatment for me and preventing any mobilisation. 9 months later I was finally seen by an orthopaedic surgeon who specialised in limb salvage and was diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). 4 years later I can finally tolerate an enclosed shoe for up to 2 hours at a time (but highly medicated with multiple anti-convulsive medications used to manage insane nerve pain). At night I can’t sleep with anything touching my foot as it feels like it’s on fire. I’m one of the lucky ones. I’m actually improving. CRPS affects children and teenagers and women in perimenopause and menopause. It affects women far more commonly than men. Students - Please protect your feet and make sure you report and unusual signs of injury to your teacher, your coach, your doctor, your physiotherapist or your podiatrist ASAP. I let my symptoms go for a full week before I attended hospital because I thought nobody would listen to me. I now think back and wish I had risked looking stupid and getting my foot checked out, rather than having been left like this. The problem wasn’t poorly fitted pointe shoes, nor was it poor technique, but it was definitely a complex mix of my health issues and the pointe work I was doing being too much for my body. How was my teacher supposed to see inside my bone marrow and assess the level of osteoporosis that I had. It was certainly far more than was expected for my age. My teacher at the time, had me going slowly and carefully whilst I reacclimatised to pointe work again and had made sure I was working within strict limits of ‘no pain’. I have no one to blame but myself (for not acting sooner) and just plain old bad genetics. But my genetics and my hypermobility were what got me into ballet in the first place. So if you have hEDS remember to keep a close eye on your injuries. We are at a higher risk of infection due to our immunodeficiency issues, due to our MCAS, due to our gastroparesis , due to some of our POTS treatments and some of our hEDS pain medications. Noone with EDS or hEDS should have to give up dancing or ballet due to fear of injury and it is a heartbreaking day when injury occurs. If you know or suspect this might be you. It’s time to start building a strong dance medicine team around you so that your career, or your enjoyable and fulfilling hobby can continue for as long as YOU want it to.

@@jessicadarling808Thank you so very much for your beautiful comments and sharing your incredible personal experiences with me! I'm truly honored as I know what it's like to actually tell people about your real life, especially online! I'm 65 with ALS but still at least do my stretching and as much as possible barre exercises everyday. My neurologist has said that she's amazed at the flexibility I have despite this rapidly moving disease. I of course always have my care giver, nurses, or husband with me when I do anything but my husband who's 6'3" partners me on Pointe which I try to do at least 3× a week. Obvious question I'm asked is "Umm... Why? Isn't that dangerous and stupid?!" My answer: "Dance brings me joy and a reason to keep pushing myself so my muscles don't atrophy completely. It's my body, my choice, my life, at least what's left of it and I'll chose happiness and joy everyday over laying in my hospital bed weeping over 'poor me'!" Translation - the milks 🥛 already spilled! Lolol 😀, are you just going to leave the mess or clean it up and keep going! ROFL🤣🤣!! I definitely know you get what I mean! Lolol 😀! But most people I even dare mention I'm ill to absolutely flip - out and call me crazy, which honestly is hurtful and why I don't tell people I'm sick. I do need new Pointe shoes however, but I don't know if Josephine still does virtual fitting consultations and she would be the only person I would trust for that! Lolol 🤣!! I live on an island 2.5hrs NW of Seattle so I'm too far away to go to her shop, Lolol 😅! Ding - Dang - It!! ROFL🤣🤣!! 💗 Lady Anne

I love Claudia! I don't wear toepads either, just for a quick on and off, but I definitely stick a loose bunch of cotton wadding in there, lambswool also works wonders. I just basically grab a clump of it, pull it apart so it's exytra fluffy and just gently push it in the box. When my foot goes in, it basically pushes it all the way down in the shape of my toes. Anyone who doesn't know I do this thinks I'm a psycho for "not wearing any padding", specially when I'm not wearing tights And YES, I change it after every use, to prevent athlete's foot and make extra sure my shoes dry up completely between uses. I usually cycle between 3-4 pairs of shoes and have found this extends their life significantly. Instead of wearing them out one at a time, which would have me buying a new pair every month or so, I buy 4 pairs, cycle them, and I only purchase once a year. I believe it has to do with allowing them to fully dry and re-harden before wearing them again. I also like putting them out in the sun every once in a while, they are ROCK HARD after.

I LOVE THIS!!!! I actually watch videos of dancers customizing their pointe shoes as a comfort watch. I love how well they know their feet and can break in their shoes to give them exactly what they need to support their dancing. As a creative who works mostly with their mind, I don't have this element of my work, so its calming to me to see someone setting themselves up for success from the get-go. I am in awe of ballet dancers. Plus, the shoes are so pretty and all the sounds they make are so satisfying, at least for me.

I have always admired just how much strength and coordination goes into not just ballet, but dancing in general. The amount of maintenance that dancers have to do for their equipment is absolutely admirable. My dancing...eh, well, it's mostly relegated to children's songs to do with my kids at work or small bits at weddings, but that is legit it. I'm no longer a ballet dancer, but I'm still so addicted to watching this! So many people don't understand the work and engineering that go into a shoe in order to make it a true extension of the leg.

I've never taken a ballet class in my life. But I love these videos and now have so much knowledge about an art I will never actually do😂❤❤❤❤

Love your reactions! And now I'm curious about the benefits of using Demi pointe shoes. I hold on to my old pointe shoes so it would be nice to have some use for them other than reminding me of how many shoes I went through 😅
