We weren't allowed to use anything except a bit of lamb's wool. I rebelled, and used old pink nylons wrapped around my toes. It worked great, and you couldn't see it against pink tights :) Also used old shoulder pads from sweaters (1980's).

I used to use paper towels and once went to a steak house and they had these really nice almost cotton like paper towels in the bathroom. I may or may not have grabbed a stack in my purse. Comfiest few weeks on pointe ever.

I tried paper towels once when I forgot my regular toe pads with my other shoes (I alternated between 2 pairs to make them last longer) Basically, it didn't work, I was in incredible pain and unable to finish class in pointe shoes, literally limping, it was quite dangerous. I used ouch pouches for a long time but was eventually able to switch to making my own pads from cotton terry socks, which are quite thick socks. I also put a gel sleeve on the knuckle of my second toe because it would take too much pressure otherwise. I found this to be a very good padding solution for me because I was able to feel much more than the ouch pouch allowed, but still had protection from rubbing where I needed it. Also, cotton can absorb a lot of sweat, so even if you are very hot, you don't end up feeling like you are standing in a puddle of sweat like you would if your padding was predominantly a plastic type material.

I had a Russian ballet teacher who used plastic bags (several layers) as toe pads. I tried it once and it actually felt ok with some of my pointe shoes.

True story... I missplaced my toepads, so for about a month (then found my toepads) I used the padding from an old bra. It really worked well!

Ok hear this out. Some of your dogs fur that’s been shedded/groomed out. My dog sheds so much that you could make a pillow out from it. So I’m thinking you could use it like padding like wool/cotton balls.

This is truly a brilliant idea and you need to run with it! I've been a Certified Companion Animal Behaviorist and Trainer for nearly a decade and I've been endlessly searching for a reasonable purpose to reuse shed dog fur from their fluffy undercoats and I think you just nailed it!!! The only issues I foresee is that there would have to be some process to make them hypoallergenic and you wouldn't be able to use any short coat fur or guard hair fur because they could potentially cause fur splinters so there would have to be a process to make sure the fur is properly, completely separated. But as for that fluffy undercoat, wonderful idea! 😃🐶💖

when I was a kid I found my mum's old pointe shoes she used when she practiced ballet as a kid. They had only a bit of cotton as a padding but I think she didn't do much on pointe. But I remember even as a kid when I tried the shoes on that the cotton was too little to do anything.

I was trained to use lambs wool. We didn't have ouch pouches (early 90's) , we would use that felt stuff with the sticky back you put on corns for major pressure point then wrap the toes in lambs wool under our tights...it worked, okay...the gel pads and ouch pouches are a total game changer

I've used foam rubber (the really thick stuff) and it worked quite well. Just cut off a piece, shaped it so it fit in my shoes, and then cut a slit into it to put my toes in. But regular toe pads were definitely better.

Hi! Of course the safest option is to get fit for new ones, but if that's not an option, then I recommend changing the sewing of your elastics to start at the heel, going around your ankle, and then back to your heel again, like in a loop or an ankle bracelet. That's what works the best for me. If you aren't allowed to use elastics, then sew the ribbons at the sides of the heels. Good luck

Once when I took a pointe class over zoom, my toddler had hidden my toe pads, and so I cut up one of her diapers! Not the best choice. However, I had an angora rabbit for a while (think angora sweaters) and used some of the fluff. It was like a cloud.

you could use liner socks as toe padding. u just take the heel part and the toe part and just fold it and put it on. i use them, and it works. u can wash it, and they don't show (for me at least).
