@clarasbeans4 жыл бұрын
Philosopher's Ink In ballet, shorter ballerinas are what companies are looking for because there aren’t many male partners (which is another annoying heteronormative thing about ballet) anyway. On top of that, with a beautiful tall ballerina like her, it’s even harder to find men that are the right height for her. Even then, it is very odd that the man has to be taller. I get that ,for lifts, the man needs to be a certain height in comparison to the lady but it is a very patriarchal thing to have the man be taller.

I wasn't even allowed to do some recitals at my first studio because I stuck out in such a bad way and it took a huge toll on me. When I auditioned for different ballet productions the notes always said the same thing -really graceful, beautiful lines, way too tall, will stick out. When people from the USA say a person who is 6 foot tall is a really tall person, I used to get really confused, until I looked up the average height of Americans today and now it all makes sense, because in the Netherlands 6 foot or 182 cm is the average male height. So to me 6 foot is not that much, but since the average male height in the USA is 5 feet 9 inches (or 175 cm) I now get why 6 feet might feel huge. A MONTH.....Im not a dancer but my best friend is and she gets new shoes like twice a week, thats an eternity for pointe shoes
@sofip.85764 жыл бұрын
It depends on the use you give the pointe, some dancers change their points every months, others every 2-3 months and others every week. It also depends on the dancers preference, a lot of times dancers like to have their pointed pretty soft, so they just wear it for a while, and others like the feeling of a brand new pointe. Hope this helps

@dopplegangersparklesplat5764 жыл бұрын
A lot of pointe shoe companies make shoes up to size 9 which would be the size that someone in size 11 street shoes would wear (pointe shoes are almost always worn two sizes down or more from your street shoe size). Beyond that, custom orders would be your only option. Grishko/Nikolay and Russian Pointe offer a wide variety of length and width options so I would recommend starting there.👍

I can relate I wear US street size 11. And finding pointe shoes that fit properly had always been a struggle. What makes it even harder is that I live in Jamaica and there is nowhere where I can go to get a professional pointe shoes fitting. I'm currently wearing Gaynor's which is the only company I've found that offers street sizes about size 9 (which I think is pointe shoe size 7?) . Unfortunately I also have rather narrow feet which I suppose it's uncommon for my shoe size, so even though I wear Gaynor's narrowest size, they're still too wide for me and my feet sink in them. This used to be unbearably painful but I got some toe pads that have fixed that to an extent. I was, however, able to do a custom shoe with Gaynor, which are the shoes I'm wearing currently that are too wide... If you are able to get a professional fitting I would highly recommend that, one day I hope I will be able to do that (I've been en pointe for 8 years btw). I'm going to assume that even though almost all pointe shoe companies don't go above street size 9, I'm going to assume that they will be willing to make custom shoes. But if they don't (although I can't imagine them saying no, since you are paying for the shoe) Gaynor is the only company I know that makes your daughter's size. But if anyway know if any other company please, please, please let me know

I'm 5'10 and was always the tallest and heaviest in our ballet group (I was only doing it as a hobby but that for 12 out of 18 years of my life and I still love it very much) when I was younger and smaller in height my teacher put me in the front and I was always really proud but getting older I got more in the back row just because I was tall not because I wasn't good... But since I still could perform I was happy. Because of my height and since we didn't have guys in our ballet group I would partly do things like lift a girl with someone else and my teacher always told me why are you not a guy... Then your height would be awesome... I still struggle with my height a lot. I really wish I would have seen this before I quit but I really appreciate representing the taller dancers and giving them a stage they sometimes don't even try to dream of...

Why don’t we take her out too?” I was also told always to be in the back and to stay in my line when I actually needed to be in the front or in a place where I could actually take up the space I needed! Help! I have a student who can't seem to get fitted properly and is getting pain at the back of her ankle. I feel like the shoes are causing it. How can I set up a virtual fitting for her?
@yumenozen4 жыл бұрын
I'm six foot tall as well, and started as an adult a few years ago, so I don't have too much hope of finding someone to partner me when I'm up on pointe anytime soon. But hey, I can lift the shorter dancers instead, so that's fun. Most I'd ever get to do with more skill development would probably be a local company and maybe eventually making some awesome videos to share on KZbin choreographed to songs I love that people haven't always heard. So that's not too bad. Finding a place that stocks pointe shoes in my size in my area of the East Coast isn't easy, but I've gone between Bloch and Gaynor Mindens, and love my Gaynors, only using Blochs right now because they were available and shipping times have been out a few months for GM because of COVID.

Some people get energy and drive from being told they are not going to be able to do something. The "I'll show you" attitude or "who are you to tell me what I can or can't do" just gives some people the drive necessary to carve out their own path. That are the stubborn ones. If you have a stubborn kid ... you can be thankful. The child will find its way.

I am just under 6ft, and always assumed I was too tall for ballet. But I’ve started practicing during the pandemic. Hopefully it’ll help strengthen my core and spine, so I’ll have an easy recovery from my next spinal operation!

Could you possibly do videos about fitting heavier dancers? People with high muscle mass or stuff like that which makes them a lot heavier and possibly different to fit?

Alena Kovaleva, First Soloist at the Bolshoi, is also 6 ft tall. She is stunning.
@ballet21034 жыл бұрын
She is not 6 feet. Alyona Kovalyova is 177 cms which is 5'9.5. She has limited partner options but lucky for her, Bolshoi has Jacopo Tissi - 188 cms (6'2) and Denis Rodkin, who usually dance with her.
@mathildewesendonck72254 жыл бұрын
# Ballet are you sure? Because I met her last year and stood next to her. I‘m 176, and she’s definitely taller. Maybe your info about her being 177 cm is old. It’s not unusual for dancers to grow until they are 17-18. (Because of delayed puberty, growth is also delayed)
@ballet21034 жыл бұрын
@@mathildewesendonck7225 No, it's not old info. It's from an interview in Russian where she discusses the challenges of her height of 177 cms. It's still very tall for a ballerina cuz you gotta add 10 cms when she is on pointe. Maria Kowroski and Teresa Reichlen from NYCB are 5'9.

Its usually the case certain body shapes work better in some pursuits than others, its why there no 6ft tall jockeys or 5 ft basketball players.

I don't do ballet, so I'd like to know how being tall affects being taught how to dance. Aren't the movements the same no matter how tall you are?
@leticiaokane30364 жыл бұрын
I guess so, but the point is dancing with partners. If you're tall u need to find a partner taller than u to do some of the moves. And also as mentioned in the video taller people sometimes are not given the opportunity to try things so they end up having some issues with some moves.

@carmenbreton8224 жыл бұрын
As a non dancer, I've realised that I have a crazy turnout and flexible feet( I have hypermobility in most of my body) from watching these videos. Like, I can spread my feet to a 180+ angle.
@carmenbreton8224 жыл бұрын
Also, I can get a pretty good arch in my foot. It really surprises me, bc I've never taken any form of ballet or dance that requires flexibility before

I wear heritage and for some reason they always squeak so I was going to get a new shoe for a while now but now I can’t because of corona and I’m scared about like the shoe not fitting because I just started pointe like a year ago and I’m not that sure about which shoes are like my favorite but since pointe shoes are so expensive, I’m scared I’ll buy the wrong ones and have to live with them for like 2 months.

It is always so funny to me when 6 ft. females (or even males) are considered "tall", but it just is where you live on this planet I guess. Yup ballet and other sports like gymnastics, the fight sports (judo to MMA) you are considered too tall fast. This whole 'ideal ballet-body" is both practical (the shorter you are the easier it is to turn fast, jump up, and you do not have to work with as much bodyweight so it is easier on the joints) and, of course, something that comes from 'the olden days''.
