It’s a combination of owner and dog. My gsp at an early age was taught the find command and naturally learned how to use his nose downwind to pick up scent. He doesn’t hang around me when tracking even at an early age. Everyone has their own technique Thanks for sharing.

Very timely video find for me because I just took my two GSP’s out separately for the first time on live quail/launcher and they noticed it, but didn’t point. My poor teaching was I was waiting for the bird to actually point before launching the bird and so I never launched it. I’ll do better next time! Thanks for sharing your training!

Nick, Maybe the Breeder offers some help? I trained several dogs myself with the help of some NAVHDA folks. I like the book "Training the Sporting Dog" by Don Smith and Ervin Jones. Don't get in a hurry. Spend quality time with your pup. Make sure it trusts you. It's very important you trust each other. You're going to cut that dog loose in a big field with hunters, and dogs, and birds, and guns going off. The bond I had with my GSP was like no other dog that I've ever had. I've had protection dogs that I thought could read my mind. Not even close to the bond with my pointer. Always set it up to succeed (try to at least - training dogs isn't a science). Like she said in the video timing is very important. Help is also helpful. Don't try to do too much at a time. Don't get in a hurry. Don't feel rushed or pressured to hunt your pup this fall. Just as important if you do hunt your dog and it isn't trained to the level you want don't expect it to perform to that level. If it isn't whoa broke don't tell it to whoa on a real bird that you're gonna shoot. Have fun with it. There's plenty of videos on KZbin with people hunting over completely wild dogs. I did it. It was fun. But not as much fun as with a dog steady to wing, shot and fall. Spend 15 minutes a day training your puppy and you'll have the dog you want and deserve. Don't spend 15 minutes a day training your puppy and you'll still get the dog you deserve. It just won't be the dog you want. Training bird dogs is one of the most rewarding things I've done. Good Luck

Nick, I have read the NAVHDA book, as well as, Hunt Close, the Delmar Smith book as well as others. I have had Ryman English Setters for 40 years now and I have settled into a blend of these methods as well as what I've learned from my breeder and have had success with this. The thing is to get with a breeder that you feel comfortable with and can help you with your training. I have discovered that some of these people have forgotten more than I ever knew about dog training. Go slow and carefully into this great world of training gun dogs. If you are not sure what to do with the dog ask your breeder or one of these people here who can help out alot.

Rachel Medaugh in the field our most powerful tool to find birds is our dogs nose. We found allowing them to cover ground naturally has been more effective use of their abilities! Everybody having a fit over the bird bag. Like you're not ever going to be hunting with a limit of birds in your bag and one in each of your buddies bag. If you've ever worked with - an untrained dog - in the field - without help - then let me know how laying the bird bag down worked for you. I've trained without remote releases. Nothing like a launcher with 30 feet of para cord, swirling winds, and a dog on point with the freaking rope wrapped around his legs. IMHO training its rarely a perfect set-up and if you do get a perfect set up and execution stop there for the day. This video is a good representation of what to expect out of a completely inexperienced dog. There's a flip side to training. The last GSP I had I trained like three times and the fourth time I let him out of the truck and he back tracked me to the last set. FRUSTRATING!

I think your jumping way ahead of yourself in d line of getting your dog to point!! Really you should have more control over your dog before you take it to that level. In d line of sitting, staying walking to heel but more importantly you should be able to cast the dog out to quarter ground turn her with the whistle an work her into the area you want! At the minute she’s way to close to you an not covering ground properly!!

Springer, the fact that this very young puppy is hanging around close to the handler has nothing to do with hunting drive. It’s totally common for a young versatile dog to do this. They have lots of cooperation manifested in paying attention to the handler. With a few bird contacts you will see a different dog, I have no doubt. I highly doubt that it has anything to do with treats. Again, it’s a typical pattern that will be absent fairly quickly. I’ve worked with hundreds of GSP pups and what you see is pretty normal. Kat is doing everything correctly.
@PerryM1016
@PerryM1016 5 жыл бұрын
rico midence telling a dog to “find the bird” or “ hunt it up” is one of the worst things one can do. It’s distracting to the dog and annoying to anyone hunting with you. Dogs hunt because they’re driven to do so. Watch that dog in a few months or a year and you’ll see a dog hunting nicely and silently.

Why does the girl carries the pigeon with her while she train this young dog? And where is the leash? from the beginning the dog dont have to run behind the bird! the have to stand on the point. Running behind is not the answer! on the first time you can learn to control it on a ball, these are all the steps bevor you train in the field. why dont you work with the wind? and when there is no wind, dont train the dog. This is a beginner. And why dont you train with gloves? all lot of great mistakes. sorry

@@dennispanthen79 I like how with each bird you can see her drive increase via increased chase. She's a young pup and needs to be bird crazy before you start reining her in. I'll let a pup her age catch and do what she will with a bird or two to really get the drive going, gets the pup away from you too!
@StandingStoneKennels
@StandingStoneKennels 5 жыл бұрын
DennisPanthen you pose a couple different points. Although we don’t have the same opinion on these matters I would be happy to explain ours. First, in regards to chasing the birds, this is the most natural way to develop a young bird dog. They are predators and if we take away the chase (which is how we build steadiness) too early you can cause long term problems or just simply slow the process of development by hurting prey drive. Next, as for using a leash... we don’t use or recommend check cords or leashes to hold a dog on point as this again is not a natural progression. We want our dogs to learn how to naturally point birds by not over pressuring them! Which also leads into your question about approaching from a different wind direction. As we mentioned in the video we want to be able to tell exactly when the pup smells the bird... this helps with timing of knowing when to launch the bird from the electronic launcher. A cross wind is the easiest way to visually tell when the pup smells the bird! Our goal is to simulate jumpy wild birds. Which wild birds IMOP are the best way to train a young bird dog. Lastly we are not beginners. Although I know this is controversial.. using gloves to set birds is completely unnecessary. Please explain to me why you feel gloves are important when setting birds! Thanks!

I'm not sure what you are trying to teach. I don't see the dog even flash point the bird. Just running right to it as soon as it smells it and you releasing it. PS dogs can and do smell their owners on the trap. Since you cannot read a dogs mind you cannot tell what she is going there for

That dog acted like that for two reasons. The pigeons in her bag and it kept looking for her to give it a treat.

No tienes ni idea. Estas jodiendo al cachorro. Y encima no lo dejas que rompa a buscar y localizar a la presa.

Poor bird. Must be traumatizing to get released from that launch, repeatedly.

I am so against dog hunting. Sorry but this is horrible for the birds. They have a small life and they deserve to live long and beautiful life. This is not right.

@@Drayafenandezwhat ? You mean to be treated cruelly ?no they should not be treated in that harsh, cruel manner. Pigeons like all other animals do not like cruel treatment.
