I’ve been listening to a lot of isolated guitar tracks lately. Listen, not everyone can be Eddie Van Halen or Nuno Bettencourt or Randy Rhoads etc. but in my much more mature view of music in my mid 50’s compared to when I was in my 20’s, it’s not a competition and at least CC was doing his thing. And he sure played in front of a LOT of people. That being said, I’m heading back over to some King Edward tracks.

Not really sure why people seem to think if a guitar riff isn't super technical it's not a good riff. Sometimes simplicity is what's called for. It's like people complaining about KISS. It's crotch rock. They never claimed to be writing symphonies. Just music to get you to move your feet and leave your seat. Poison was great at what they did, mostly party music with a good ballad thrown in here and there.

I constantly waffle on my thoughts towards CC. He definitely doesn't suck as a musician, or he wouldn't have had the success and staying power all these years. As a guitar player, the best way to describe him is that it's 'a walk down memory lane' for any decent or accomplished guitar player. CC sounds like every rock guitar player about 3-6 months into taking the guitar seriously. You know a couple of scales. You can't bend to an actual note to save your life. Your vibrato is on Bambi legs. You've just discovered harmonics. Your whammy bar is much more of an eject button than an intricate part of your style. You have learned a half dozen licks, and you play them on every solo a bit too fast, and they're still a tad over you head. You still haven't evolved enough to know how to dial in a decent tone.. What I find even more fascinating is that he's never evolved past this point. This in itself is a feat that I find to be his biggest strength. When I listen to a Poison song, I whistle along to the solo every time. He definitely knew how to be melodic, and his riffs were memorable. For fun, I sometimes will play one of his solos 'correctly' (bends in tune, with some decent Schon vibrato, minus the incorrect notes, with some proper transitions) and they sound just as good as most of the 80s guitar players we all love. Maybe he was just a genius and knew that the guitar God lane was clogged up, and said "I'll be this guy".. I can name a dozen bad ass guitar slingers that made it big in the 80s... I can't think of another one that made it big quite as untalented guitar wise as CC... So for that, he definitely does not suck and deserves all the success he has gotten through the years..

what are you talking about? Bobby is the worst bass player on his era. He plays one note and that's difficult for him. He plays even worse live. I came here because of Dokken fanboys comparing George Lynch with CC Deville(stupid name btw.). All I have to say is Dokken could and should have used CC for some catchy and original riffs while Poison could have used someone like George for some soloing. But at the end of the day I'd take a good riffer over a shredder whose rhythm and riffplaying is ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-shred-shred-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-song-ends. George's riffing and rhythm playing sucked sweaty balls in Dokken, but with Lynch Mob's 'Wicked Sensation' that suddenly changed a 180 degrees. Even the truly great Jake E. Lee said he'd much rather be a technically limited but good riff/songwriter than a technically masterful guitarist. In his case he happens to be both, but you get the point. Both Dokken and Poison had in common their awful kitchy style and silly posery but I always did appreciate CC's abilities to craft good riffs!

This is an isolated track from the mix. Anyone who has ever mixed anything knows that a guitar tone that sounds good on it's own is not necessarily what will sound best in the mix of the whole band. In fact if you make the guitar tone sound good and full on its own you are definitely taking up some of the space where the bass and kick should live etc...you want guitar to cut. If you want to dial in an awesome sounding tone on it's own then you better be playing by yourself. Some of the greatest guitar sounds in songs out there solo'ed out of the mix sound terrible on their own. Usually very mid rangey and grating to listen to by themselves.

What’s he doing tap harmonic?

I don’t think this is real. Isn’t the rhythm pattern in the ascending part at the beginning of the riff the same sixtuplet rhythm in the descending part? What is THIS fucked up thing? Sounds weird.

You are hearing just one isolated channel. There were many layers that are added to the mix that essentially when put all together is more gelled . ie : Def leppard - Hysteria had over 2000 separate guitar parts. If you listen to them separately you wouldn't know what song it is

Rush x1 please tell me how they had 2000 guitar parts on a 48 track machine.

@@WhyTheHorseface It is the basis of recording. You take a part, record it. Take another part, record it. Make multiple different parts and record it onto one track. Then take that and mix it with another track and record both of those ultimately putting it all onto one track. You can have thousands of sounds going off on just one track if that is ultimately what you want. Some parts may just be "Ching" or just line of 3 notes. Putting them in the right place is also an art.

Pretty sure it’s real. You can just hear how sloppy it really is when there aren’t other instruments to mask it.

Listen to Ratts round and round isolated guitar from a song released 10 year earlier and then tell me it you think CC is still a great guitar player 🤣🤣🤣

Robbin Crosby’s isolated track was my favorite! “King” and Demartini was a powerful duo!#Legends#RATT&ROLL#🐀🎸🔥🤘🏻

I am not trashing the guy here but if I heard my neighbor playing that on his guitar I would not think he had a chance at making it big.

His solos would disagree with you. Maybe you have to look deeper than the songs produced for the radio before commenting on his actual skills. Maybe.

Maybe but remember, it is about the songs and the vibe, not the skills. It's still a bitching riff and CC wrote a few of those in his time. Wish I had a few of those riffs in my name! Nothing but a good time is another beauty..loved that opening riff as a kid.

@@Polentaccio I was never a fan of Poison, but you made a great point here. A guitar solo is just a guitar solo. It's part of a SONG. A hit song has a great groove, and a hook, or memorable riff that it keeps going back to. This same idea goes for any song. The idea is to gain airplay, entertain existing listeners, and generate new ones.

Nickhead87 - With logic like what? He was making a point and you completely came up with an utterly ridiculous statement that has nothing to do with what he said. Talk about a logic fail on your part. Please.
