Trust me - he's got the gain, his hands are how he manipulates it. The Echoplex gives it all more sustain, an illusion of "more" gain, and probably some studio compression too to go with that. You can hear him all over the volume knob of the guitar and also his featherlight touch on the verses and when he wants to kick it into high gear and achieve the fat gain sound, he simply lays into the pick more. What is on display in this track is Ed's superhuman control of a live amplifier with a crazy breadth of tonal characteristics. Face it, if played perfectly clean or without an amp - this would sound childlike, super cheesy, tacky beyond belief. However, with THAT guy plugged into a super interesting amplifier in that room controlling all the bells and whistles and chimes and squeaks and growls and moans and whispers and grunts of that monster Marshall running soaked to the bone like only he could...... it sounds like a carnival of joy upon your reentry to earth's atmosphere from a lifelong voyage into deep space, a most exuberant WELCOME HOME! WE'RE GLAD YOU MADE IT! that we all need now and then but only Ed could deliver.

What gets me is the soft part, where some of it still sounds bassy and muffled, like he switched down the tone control..... except there's no tone control. I had a drink in my right hand, and a cigarette in my left at the bar, and that's where the cancer spot was. I was radiated way beyond the normal numbers, but thankfully, never spread. That is so perfect and in the mix you're bound to miss how subtle and cool his feelings is with respect to all parts. Coming out of that perfect bluesy Chuck Berry style solo into the bridge. When he goes into the verse and turns down the volume using his fingers with the quiet pedal tone and the two string finger stabs for the low E, high E, A and D before going to that F sharp Minor with the open E and B strings ringing then muted going to the C sharp minor to the single note low E and A String buildup to the. B SUS 4 pinch harmonics to natural harmonics going from 5th fret to 4th fret and getting the harmonics no one else dares try. The subtle use of bent taps during the solo, the arpeggiated chord during the bridge where the imagery he creates makes it impossible for the listener to not picture an open highway, with the humidity coming off the road while you are hauling ass but all you hear is the quiet sounds of road passing under your feet. The build up with the C power chord flattening the 5th of the C chord which is G to F# which creates such bAd ass tension. The perfect song, perfect brown sound and perfect use of harmonics like the one he gets on the B 2nd fret of the A string after the into goes from C#m to the A M open power chord then hitting the 2nd fret B with that beautiful punch harmonic taking the Lowest B note on the guitar to the next octave without playing the B at the 4 the fret of the G string. Brilliant. Did I mention his feel. HOLY SHITis he the greatest .

I agree. Ed had several influences. However, he never told anyone to "play like" him or to be his clone. Ed always encouraged players to create their OWN style of playing but above all else he always said "keep playing!"

Actually so simple really, yet the subtle nuances make it far more complex than it appears

The hook in this song is just fantastic. Eddie just had feel. But it was a indescribable feel. Like you could ascribe feel to a lot of great players that know how to wait or aren't overdoing solos. Eddie was his own genre. The tone and technicality along with a hook that is just jumping. Even the breakdown is groovy. Probably my favorite part. The guy revved his Muira for the song! It shows you that Eddie had good taste as well. I miss him. Van Halen was one of my favorite bands growing up. Thank god for KZbin. These isolated tracks that I have been running into, keep my interest piqued.

Most of us really did try to appreciate EVH while he was alive....But just like any other artist, it's only after his passing that we truly realize what we've lost.

I love how they recorded this so true to what’s actually being heard when he plays. Great capture engineer! Whoever recorded this is an Unsung hero. lol

As an engineer, I appreciate your respect for the work we do. We are technical artists. We have definite ideas about what sounds good and we learn the techniques to get there as best as we can.

It's amazing how much tone he gets from just his hands. The overdrive and distortion is surprisingly low in his set up.

Damn I teared up already when he hit the first chord

simplicity is actually a key here, in his playing. it's so clear. the tone is what is complex and hazy and nebulous, and glorious. this is sooo good with NO shredding 9even the solo!) , but is still badass!

Ed’s rhythm playing gets nowhere near the credit it deserves. The groove in this in unreal, even with it being just a guitar.

He is considered amongst the very best ever by just about every guitarist. How is he under rated?

@@nathanheckathorne8061 it’s my little running joke by posting that. There is always some twat who posts about someone being ‘criminally underrated’. So now I just post it everywhere for a laugh..😂

I was a young teenage guitar player when this music was released - we were so blown away we could not have been more surprised if aliens had landed. Eddie inspired all of us, and always will.
