I think Bret saw Richie as a kind of 'Steve Gaines'-type, game-changing addition to the band that would finally give Poison the southern rock credibility that Bret seemed to crave back in the late '80's/early '90's....

As Classic Rock Magazine once said about this line-up: "It was an all-too-brief stab at musical credibility for Poison". Richie Kotzen forced them to raise their game, whether anyone wants to admit it or not. Native Tongue was a very good album that came out at the wrong time, with "Grunge" being the in-thing.

He once said that the best thing he got out of Poison was Deanna Eve. I like Poison but Richie outclasses them... They became complacent & every album after Flesh and Blood was not worth buying. it's all good. He was still pretty young and incredible. He was part of the whole Mike Varney thing. A producer who was really into finding young shredders. He found Paul Gilbert, Malmsteen, Freidman, Becker, John 5 etc. Talking about young...He sent in Paul Gilberts audition tape to Ozzy, when Ozzy was recruiting a guitarist, Gilbert was 15 yrs. old, which is a big reason he didn't get the gig. So Gilbert went to LA and onto GIT instead and formed Racer X, then Mr. Big. But yeah all those guys were young back then. Becker was 19 when he recorded DLR's Little Ain't enough, Becker already had two Cacophony albums and world tour under his belt by then. But yeah Kotzen is crazy good.

He isn't the best shredder, not even close, but he has a really soothing-melodic style of playing.
