30 years ago I had a spinal cord injury and have been treated with pain medications ever since, and now being treated with fentanyl under the care of a physician. It is the only medication that manages the pain and I can still function. And used appropriately it is a lifesaver, but when abused it's a killer

It’s best to start weening when you are ready to and less likely of a relapse. I actually read somewhere recently that it actually takes your frontal lobe in your brain two years to fully recover from using opiates, not sure if that is true, I’m no doctor lol but crazy if it is!! I started two years ago at around 170 mg and I’ve come down to 110 mg! It has been a blessing for me! Wow that’s awesome that your starting tech school for welding tomorrow! Congrats! @1911leslie that’s awesome. Glad you were able to successfully detox off of it! 🙂 however, I personally do not feel that I am ready yet. I actually just saw my doctor for my annual physical at my clinic on may 11th last Wednesday and even he said the longer you are on it the better and the less likely you are to relapse. I definitely don’t plan on being on it long term or a “lifer” but I do plan on staying on it for atleast another year before I start weening. I have been clean from heroin for two years, the whole time I’ve been on methadone however the first couple of months I was using cocaine every so often.. but I haven’t used anything illicit at all in 20 months. So for that reason, I myself do plan on getting another year under my belt of sobriety before trying to ween off. Also, I’ve actually already significantly come down quite a bit from my original dose of 170 mg and now on 110mg….And yes I know it takes a very long time to ween off but I think it is best for each individual person to do what’s best for them, everyone’s different! Thank you though. Super glad you successfully detoxed though! And hope everything has gone great ever since! 😊😊

I hate how Fentanyl is villianized by the media. When it's used appropriately it relieves unspeakable pain. I have to go through a multi step process just to maintain my Fentanyl prescription. It is closely monitored by frequent drs appointments and routine blood draws, plus signing a contract, amongst other things. Without Fentanyl my pain is debilitating 24/7. I have a progressive disease that has taken over my body. I understand that there are people who abuse drugs, and fentanyl is amongst those drugs. However, they shouldn't make it more difficult to prescribe to patients like me, who really need it.

​@@zelchanveronika5990its not difficult to know who to prescribe it to; patients who have progressive painful diseases have multitudes of tests, scans, surgeries under their belt. NEARLY ALL painful diseases show up in CT/MRI scans. Skilled physicians know what to look for on these scans to determine the approx. pain level of a patient with the disease. When a patient is prescribed fentanyl (in patch form usually) it is because it is a last resort. Every other treatment has failed them and by the time they are prescribed fentanyl they have suffered for years with excruciating pain that has more than likely already affected their heart, organs, etc... uncontrolled debilitating pain can kill you (heart attacks, strokes, etc... I shouldn't need to mention that blood pressure medication will NOT control blood pressure related to severe pain), nor should this ever be attempted. Numerous pain patients are guinea pigs and have been for decades. Trust me: daily opioids that are prescribed is a last resort and is very needed for that patient. They are heavily monitored; as though they are a criminal... when in fact they are a victim of a diseased body and it could happen to ANYONE at ANYTIME. 😢

They're only going to make it much much worse. The legitimate prescribing of opiates/opioids is not, and has never been, the problem. Every pain sufferer who is refused pain meds is a potential new customer for the illicit market. Sounds like Finland is on the road to creating a much larger illicit narcotic market in Finland, and creating the same massive problem of unnecessary death and ruined lives that the DEA has created and perpetuates in the USA. Keep in mind that the illicit drug market isn't a problem for the people who benefit from it.

In my 25 years of working with patients suffering from opioid addiction, I have never seen the level of loss that I see now. On a daily basis, I hear stories from patients about how they have lost friends and loved ones to fentanyl overdoses. This is a tragedy of unprecedented proportions. People are being deliberately poisoned, and the death toll is mounting. There needs to be immediate action taken to put an end to this crisis. We need to protect our country from the influx of fentanyl.

The real crisis began with the DEA shutting down the pain clinics ('pill mills'), sending hundreds of thousands of addicts back to the streets, and the subsequent campaign against legal prescribing of opioid pain meds which has left tens of thousands of legitimate pain patients with no recourse but to seek relief via illegal sources. Concurrent with this (since around 2012-14) the illegal drug sellers (Mexican cartels, et al.) have saturated the US illegal drug market with fentanyl-laced counterfeit pain pills, fentanyl-laced heroin, etc. There is no "immediate action" that can be taken that will stop or reduce the fentanyl problem, other than repealing the Controlled Substances Act, abolishing the DEA, legalizing drugs, and giving both addicts and legitimate pain patients legal, documented access to safe and affordable opioids.

I recently had a knee replacement. Due to ongoing back pain I have been on morphine based pain relievers, off and on, for a few years. Due to this, my anaesthetist wrote me up for fentanyl post operatively. I woke up in incredible pain in recovery, so they gave me fentanyl. I ended up being in the recovery room for 4 hours……..fentanyl drastically dropped my BP and O2 sats…..I thought I was going to die. Never again.

I had to refuse to take the high doses of pain medicine prescribed by a doctor after surgery while I was hospitalized and forced him to massively decrease my dose and put me on a less addictive pain medication. Had I not have insisted on that I may have actually died. He prescribed 100 mg of oxycodone and I forced him down to 50mg of tramadol. Some doctors law enforcement mental health etc. are psychopaths and sociopaths and get into their fields for the control and power that they have and to learn how to get away with criminal actions so we must have legislation that will hold them accountable especially for children who are having major medical procedures done such as sex change operations which is completely unethical and immoral bc the human brain is not fully developed until age 25 years specifically the areas involved in making judgments so how can people determine that they are completely able to make such drastic judgments for themselves when they are not fully equipped physically and mentally??? They can’t ethically.

Yes. It is. With a felony conviction, it's very difficult, and in many (maybe most) situations impossible, to get a job. It's our governmental drug policy, and an uninformed and apathetic public, that has created and perpetuated the US drug problem. We know that the prohibit-enforce-incarcerate model not only doesn't work, but has created many more problems. And yet it continues to be used. We also know that a model of legalization-rehabilitation-support will work, and would put the illegal drug dealers out of business. It almost seems like the US government not only doesn't want to solve the problem, but is actually working to keep the illegal drug trade flourishing.

I took this drug from my dr I can tell you it’s amazingly addictive and one day without it creates hell like symptoms. I got off it twice and refuse to use it. @@bigredinfinity3126 I tried heroin before, I had a pain pill addiction for about 5 years, then the doctors sent me to a psychiatrist for suboxone, I was on that for around 5-6 years, then I did meth for about 2-3 years. To me the suboxone had the worst, and longest withdrawal symptoms. Suboxone withdrawal, took me around 2 weeks to start moving around, but I had psychological issues for a while.

Preparing yourself to fast helps kick that caffeine kick back. But be prepared for a full 14 days of hell. You have to prepare to stop caffeine. Once you stop it long enough, you will realize you have been getting high for a very long time.

@ Please don’t, it’s a struggle. I’m 22. From 16 I started drinking energy drinks daily, smoking cigarettes, weed, alcohol,coke. I stoped cigarettes. Only recently was in a car accident & I stoped my “ addictions” ( due to not being able to actually move & get my fix’s) first time in my life for over 1 month sober. (approx. 4 months sober.) but I’ve realised I’m an addict, because I got OxyContin or what ever it’s spelled & next thing you know I started getting addicted. Thankfully stopped & threw them in the toilet because I didn’t want to go down another rabbit hole of addiction with something “new” I have to break out of. I got better physical & then my anxiety & ptsd etc, kicked in and second it did I unfortunately just lost control again & went back to that feeling of “comfort of something I know” from drinking, alcohol, smoking weed & coke if not then energy drinks just to try & feel energy or something. It’s not a way of life!

@@prissypacheco2860 in my state you can get your medical marijuana card for opiate dependence. That along with the methadone do miracles. It might not work for everyone but it worked for me and alot of other people I know. The bud also helped alot for when I started weaning off the methadone. Honestly I wouldn't of ever got off methadone if I didn't have my mmj card. You have to cut ties with people that still use and change your whole lifestyle. It doesn't happen over night but when you look back, time seemed like it flew. Eventually the monkey comes off your back and you never think about it. The thought of losing everything that you gained in recovery and the hard road it was to get to this point overpowers actually going and using again and you have that bud that will quickly change your thinking and feelings of using. I used for 15 years and like i said and probably many other people that I know me would say the same, that if I can do it anyone can. Stay strong, you can do it too. The grass is MUCH more greener on the other side! I wish you the best.

He said the key thing there.. Used as it was designed, Used as prescribed. As someone who is dependent on opioids to be normal and do some normal things - I don't consider myself an addict. I and many like me take the drugs to rid ourselves of non stop pain, life long pain. I get people who go from using it to stop pain to using it to get a rush, but don't confuse addicts with dependents. If I stop taking opioids, I will not be able to walk, feed myself or wipe my own butt. I don't use it to get a rush, I take them to be normal. I have the problem is not the drug itself, its the illegal access to it. When used as prescribed, these drugs change lives, improves lives and save money on care. So don't blame the drug, blame the illegal access to it, blame the doctor shoppers who continue abusing it. But don't ban it from those that need it to be normal.

@Andrew You're exactly right Andrew. There's a difference between dependence and addiction. Pain sufferers, especially chronic pain sufferers, who are prescribed opioids so that they can live relatively normal productive lives almost never become addicts, even though they will become physically dependent with increasing tolerance. Prescribed opioids have saved and improved the quality of millions of lives.

Addiction diminishes quality of life. Dependant upon a [certain] medication improves quality of life. Thats the difference. There are many medications (under the care of a doctor and taken as prescribed) that allow people to lead an improved life, not just pain medications. Its a case by case basis.

Recovery is wonderful. I myself am a recovering alcoholic with 17 years of sobriety on July 7, 2022. One thing that I know for sure is even with that accomplishment I can't and won't tell my personal care physician. They don't look at the accomplishment, but fixate on the addiction. That's wrong of doctors and so was getting folks hooked on opioids. I guess doctors take a course in "two face" because they sure are good at it.

@ shae Don't sound so shocked ! It's not a new practice, many dispensing prescriptions are stolen, for a fee you get a script. These days you don't have to go far to get the goods, they can be delivered to your door in a couple of clicks on line or on your phone. The methods used to date would make your hair curl ! I've taken every kind of opiate or opioid and have detoxed off all of them and fentenyl is very different. it's only prescribed to 95% of the time to cancer patients with severe pain, or in hospice. it's not a drug even designed for people to come off of. it's also an opioid and not an opiate, so it's synthetic and not made from the natural opium plant. fentenyl withdrawal is harder than opiate to come off of, and although it's said to have a shorter half life, the physical withdrawal is longer and more intense than say real oxycodone or heroin. H and oxy's (and I took well over 100 mg a day) is much easier to come off of than fentenyl which I think is why so many people are addicted to it and then dying. the withdrawals get worse the second and third week compared to the first which is why people that can't afford rehab, suboxne or methadone usually (almost have to) relapse bc the heart palpitations feel like you're being electrucuted, severe insomnia unless you have something like Seroquel, while having an anxiety attack, while sweating like crazy and never ever able to get comfortable. of all the people I've met who did fentenyl, one is sober. it's way harder than Heroin or opiates equal to that because fent is 50 x stronger, you feel 50 x worse coming off of it and the health care system in our country isn't explaining WHY so many people are overdosing on this drug when I did Heroin, I never actually thought I could die. I have friends who did H on and off for 30 years. that's just not poss w fent. I stopped shooting up bc there's a diff amount of fent in every pill, it's actually like Russian roulette. I may do crazy stuff as an addict, but I don't REALLY wanna die. this is not an epidemic, this is a poisoning 💔

@@barneyronnie yes! I was on 40-120 mg on and off since 2017 and I took my last dose July 2021 (went down to 5 mg) so I detoxed off that all the second half 2021 that has been the hardest drug to come off, even harder than fent but really worth it

I had an overdose and it was from a doctor in the hospital and I nearly died twice. You don't remember five or six hours you pee the bed and that happened twice and they don't even care. And I have a very high tolerance to opioids. I think it was hydromorphone

You have to be your own doctor when it comes to pain pills. I don't like the way they make me feel. Like I don't have control of myself. After my 2nd kee surgery my doctor gave me 4 narcotic. Didn't get any of them filled I was already taking tremodal. When my therapist would come they could see I was in pain. I would do things to ease the pain. When I had my 3 children I refused any kind of pain medication.

Well thats good that you were able to control your pain with a relatively mild pain killer. I had a very different experience, back when the opioid crusade was kicking off in 2015 I had multi level spine surgery and initially I was refused anything other than anti inflammatories. I ended up staying in the hospital for a week due to complications and they eventually relented with the meds. People think its so easy for every person to get opioids when in reality at this point you could sever your arm and they would tell you ibuprofen is enough.

I'm one of few lucky people that FENTANYL has no affect on. My surgeon tried to give me 300mcgs in thru the IV and it had zero effect on me and he couldn't believe his eyes. I was still fully awake and talking like had just given me saline. He gave me another dose with no response. He had to ask for special meds to make sure I felt no pain during the surgery. I can't become addicted because I can't feel high! I'm truly blessed!!!🙏

You can still become dependent. If given the drug for a period of time, you may not experience the initial euphoria but your neurochemicals/transmitters and receptors will respond and when ceased you will likely experience withdrawal. Unless you are a total anomaly, in which case your are rare and a tad bit insensitive given the context. I am pretty sure there is more to it than simply wanting to get high. Otherwise why do new born babies born to addicted mothers suffer withdrawal. Are they seeking to get high immediately after birth?

I've had patches on me for 2 months with no affect or withdrawal symptoms. I have a rare opiate response condition. Morphine is another drug that doesn't work on me. I've had this condition since I was born.

Little Blue pill has made it to Canada and all of our small little communities I personally never thought I would lose my sister to the streets but she is completely hooked on these pills she overdosed recently and needed six shots of Narcan to be brought back brought back only to go back to the streets it’s a shame

Me and my wife are homeless in Victorville. We are fentanyl users. Most of the other homeless people here are all addicted to fentanyl. In the past 2 months 4 people have died. One guy I just saw yesterday was in his early 20's just overdosed yesterday. I hope me an be my wife can get off this junk. We have been addicted to fentanyl for over 10 years. Even methadone won't stop the cravings.

You can do it! But I don't doubt that it is hard. But just keep telling yourself, you can do it , and ask sober people for help if you know any. It try to find more sober friends so they can redirect your attention. Just remember, the bigger the craving, the closer you are to getting clean. It's like walking through a wall of fire.

Reading the comments and having some understanding of the pharmacology of opiates I am somewhat bothered. The massive negative stigma and blame attributed to those who become addicted is simply ridiculous. I also do not consider it a disease of addiction. My reasoning is as follows: Opiates are a drug, a drug which acts to create intense physical dependence in a fairly short time frame of use, especially in regard to synthesized formulations like Fentanyl. Drugs that causing physical dependence will consequently involve a withdrawal symptom profile when ceased abruptly. Unfortunately, opiate withdrawal is intolerable, probably the worst form of withdrawal. Addiction, persistent usage is for the purpose of withdrawal avoidance more than seeking euphoria. Certainly, if a person has some vulnerabilities eg psychological pain/trauma, the early benefits of an opiate are the relief of said pain. Hence it is quite understandable that people will like opiates if vulnerable, but also if they are perfectly healthy, undamaged individuals also. Everyone who regularly takes a strong opiate will, repeat will, develop an addiction, this is how the drug works. So why is it always presented as a disease of addiction while not acknowledging the character of opiates means it will always become a matter of addiction. Oxycontin or Oxycodone was not a new drug, it had been around for a long time, often used in palliative care. Oxycodone was addictive 50-60 years ago, like opiates have been for centuries, there is no non-addictive opiate. It was grossly irresponsible and negligent for the medical fraternity and pharmaceutical companies to peddle opiates to the masses then feign surprise when the inevitable occurred. Kudos to this couple for breaking their dependence, I do not think they are drug addicts. They had a perfectly expected, physiological reaction to an opiate and recovered from the withdrawal syndrome. They should give themselves a break and discontinue defining their lives by it, be kind to themselves.

Some pain patients do become addicts. But the vast majority don't. The main problem for society is the vast criminal enterprise that is the illicit narcotics trade. The government narrative blaming doctors and legal narcotics manufacturers is misleading. The DEA's agenda is to keep the illicit markets flourishing, and to control and use it. The climate surrounding legal prescribing of opiates/opioids has, for at least 10 years, made most doctors afraid to prescribe opioid/opiate pain meds. This has resulted in an increase of potential customers for the illegal drug market, an increase in suicides, and an increase in overdose deaths. Blaming doctors and drug manufacturers is part of the DEA/government misinformation campaign. I agree that addiction is not a disease. At least not in the sense that disease has been traditionally understood. I've been taking Tramadol for 10 years (Crohn's disease) and recently tapered down from 6+, 50 mg tablets per day to less than 1 tablet per day (Humira has put my Crohn's into remission for a while). Unfortunately, (I'm 74), during the taper I was diagnosed with scoliosis, piriformis sciatica, osteopenia, and arthritis. The pain has greatly reduced my quality of life, however the doctors are reluctant to increase the Tramadol, which is the only thing that has helped so far. This is because of the political climate surrounding the prescribing of opioids/opiates for pain, which is perpetuated by the government's and mainstream media's propaganda against legal prescribing, and which has worsened and perpetuates the real problem of the illegal narcotics trade.

Started with my parents Norcos and dilauded at 14 and at 15 was introduced to Crystal and cocaine by my own mothers boyfriend. By the time I was 19 I was a full blown heroin/meth junkie. Since I started using I havnt been able to string together more than a year or year and a half clean. You are right about the drugs releasing insane levels of "feel good" chemicals in the brain but you will always have to pay the piper , for all the time spent feeling great, you're going to have to pay for it with your life. I've been actively trying to get clean or stay clean since the first time I experienced heavy heroin withdrawals At 19 and it's been a battle I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy because of how it's affects the whole family. My little brother could be getting married and I could be late because I have to pick up dope before I go , because you need the dope to survive. Seriously if you are not addicted yet try your fucking best dude to never do opiates, it's more than a slippery sloap once you're hooked it's game over and you may never be capable of pulling yourself out of its grips, especially if you're dead. I've lost over 20 friends to opiods and it gets worse every year since fentynal hit the streets. For 10 bucks I can get enough dope to kill myself. Anyways when I read your comment I could relate to that feeling of absolutely needing to feel different but dude if you havnt done it then don't start now because I promise you'll wish you had just killed yourself once you become a slave to it.. working just to get high and needing to be high to work is a viscous cycle. I empathize with you but my brother lost his 11 month old daughter to beaten to death, And three years later was shot 5 times twice in the face, He's still on drugs but he tries to live a normal life, I've never done any kind of drugs or alcohol and won't take a Tylenol I was I icu with double pneumonia! my Dr's thought I was crazy because I wouldn't receive them, I look around and know why I don't! I too was addicted to heroin I started off doing perks and snorting them then It just went from that to shooting heroin it just draws you in so quick withen a week of consistently doing it your hooked and getting sick and the heroin I was buying had alot of fetanyl in it I overdosed quite a few times and the sad thing about being addicted to it is you just get drawn into it even more and when your dealers are selling stuff that making people overdose in and addicts mind you think it's fire stuff it's insane how bad the addiction gets now that I've been clean for 6 and half years thinking back on it I can not believe how bad I got before I knew it 10 years went by of me using heroin my life just flew by wasted 10 years.
