When he talks about what the doctor said about a chronic pain patient not being an addict, OMFG I went through this with a friend of mine, with unfortunate and very heartbreaking results that I still not able to fully get over because of what a wonderful vibrant and amazing person she was that suffered from a form of chronic pain that was very real....but I went to the doctor's with her, watching her filling out form after form after form after form....and one of the forms that they gave her was literally distinguishing what an addict was and what a chronic pain opioid tolerant patient was.... it didn't take long for her to end up just as this woman did.....I just want people out there to understand when you're in that position it goes beyond a personal choice or morals or anything....it takes over their brain literally, do not ever judge anyone unless you are put in that position, I just wish I would have been a better friend....

I don't even like taking these things and I have been stockpiling them because the doctors are getting so weird about prescribing and I worry about getting cut off and ending up in bad shape one day. I suffer from chronic pain. The doctor was actually correct. I never abused my medication and I am neither dependent or addicted to my medications. I can stop taking my pain medication for days and not suffer withdrawals. I actually suffer more from not taking my anti depressants then not taking my pain pills. I am in major pain; to the point I feel like I want to go to the emergency room. BUT I like to feel some pain so I can see what my pain levels are if I may need to stop working out for a few days or if I am doing okay. I was told by a panel of doctors because I’ve had brain surgery I 1. Can not do a stimulator in my back and I can’t do acupuncture because it won’t work unless I’m off of my pain meds for a least a month. 2. I will be on pain medication for the rest of my life; because pain causes ones blood pressure to go up and I can’t have high blood pressure due to my brain surgery. I honestly don’t like pain meds; because I have to schedule my month around them due to having to take urinalysis and phone and face to face with my nurse... AND THE STIGMA! I don’t understand how people normalize this and begin to abuse their pain medication. I should also note none of my doctors receive monies from pharmaceutical companies... They all either worked for or contracted with the GOVERMENT, VA, OR DOD... Which prohibits doctors to allow pharmaceutical companies to “court” them.

A lot of these comments seem overly hostile toward the patients. Yes there is some personal responsibility when it come to your body and what you put into to it, but it shouldn't be over looked how far too many doctors are in the grip of the pharmaceutical companies. When someone is in a profession you trust you are likely to follow the advice they give you. We're taught from a young age that doctors are there to help you, they just want you to get better so you don't question their prescriptions. Once you start taking these drugs they can become addictive and change the way you respond to thing making it less likely you will do anything that stops your intake. So instead of just insulting these people maybe consider what they've been through to get to that point.

They only become addicted if they do not follow the instructions to take them. Taking too many leads to drug seeking behavior, which means you are running out of your prescription before the end of the month when it’s time for renewal. That’s when the “addicts” are turning to the streets to get their “fix” This happened in 2009. The husband takes no responsibility for this?? Crazy. As many times as she supposedly OD and had to be taken to the hospital, why was he NOT controlling her medication?? He says “she was laying down there, and her pills were over there” he may as well have put a loaded gun in her hand, if he’s repeatedly giving her, her medications back. Instead of standing there taking pictures of her, if he really wanted to take care of her, those meds would have been in a locked box and only handed out when it was time for her next dosage. Everyone looking to blame someone else, when it’s just as much his fault as hers and the drs.

The problem is people who are not regulated. I have extremely sever cases of chronic pain. When I went to specialist at children's hospital at 14 the doctors said I have the worst fibromyalgia they had ever seen in an 80 year old let alone in a 14 year old. I was told "if you're not dead by 60 you will be a cripple" and I am very much on my way to being a cripple. I also have ehlers danlos syndrome, which is where my joints dislocate. Most people just have to worry about maybe dislocating but I have a very sever case of it and dislocate joints several times a day, every day. I literally just popped my hip back into socket like 10 mins ago and I have popped both wrist back in earlier about 4 different time through out the day. I popped in my shoulder when I woke up from a nap. I also have degenerative joints. My joints and spine are disintegrating. I am in constant pain. But what people don't seem to realize is opioids are not there to take away the pain, they are there to make the pain manageable. If you are taking enough to feel no pain at all and it depressing your breathing and heart rate, you are taking way too much. That's not how they are supposed to be used. I take 20mg of oxycontin 3 times a day. A regiment and I am still in extreme pain. But it's not there to take it away. It's there to make your pain manageable. I have taken this regiment for almost 10 years, so yes my body is addicted and if I go without it for too long I will go through withdrawal but I do not abuse my medication. People need to stop with this idea that opioids are there to make the pain stop completely. If you have chronic pain you need to be on a regiment not just popping pills when ever you feel pain. My doctor makes sure his patients aren't abusing their medications and if he thinks they are he will make sure they are not doctor shopping and that they stay on a regiment and get weened off. If you are abusing the medications he will not continue to prescribe to that person and makes sure they get in a program to help them. You can't paint us all with the same brush. If you take away opioids from everyone you are taking it away from people like me that don't abuse their medications but still need them. (P.S. I have cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome so I can't smoke weed anymore. I smoked for 15 years and it burned out my receptors and last time I smoked weed I went through an episode that almost killed me. I threw up for 48 hrs straight and my organs were shutting down. According to the emergency room dr)

My back pain is managed by facet joint rhizotomies every 2 to 3 years and at worst Codeine. The rhizotomies are where you are sedated (propofol) and the pain specialist inserts a fine needle under fluoroscope x-ray into the area, the needle is heated using radio frequency and it scars the nerve that is being targeted after tests confirm that is the origin of the pain. Works a treat for me, I get some back ache but nowhere near enough pain for opiods and on a bad day some stronger dose codeine on a prescription. The lady was on 2 opiate meds because she was on Oxycontin, which is extended release, used to manage pain throughout the day and the instant release version, Percocet (which also has acetaminophen in it), used for acute instances of pain. That's the only case where 2 opiates can be combined. One is extended release and one instant. The doctor obviously knew what he was doing. It's also easily researched. Ultimately it was the lady who chose to abuse the medication. Taking more and more. She should have been switched to something stronger if oxycodone wasn't enough for the pain. The unpalatable truth is that she probably liked the high she was getting so she wasn't interested in taking something else or communicating this to her doctor. The husband probably made the doctor feel questioned and he didn't get the collaboration he wanted from him as he approached his actions the wrong way. I can understand the husband is distraught but it's not the doctor's fault his wife wasn't taking it as prescribed anymore and overdosing on it repeatedly. You can't always blame someone else for your actions, sorry... no one was putting the pills in this lady's mouth. She was taking them and abusing them and willingly so.

Now, there can be justifiable reasons to prescribe 2 (two) opioid narcotic pain medications for pain- including BOTH: 1) OxyContin ; And: 2) Percocet. The reason could be: 1) The "OxyContin" (extended-release formulation} of: "oxycodone" ; would be for "chronic, 'round-the-clock, ongoing pain" ; And: 2) The "Percocet" (immediate-release formulation) of: "oxycodone & acetaminophen" {combination product}; would be for: "breakthrough pain".

In my personal opinion, you're correct in that the wife was the addict and the husband may not have approached the situation with a clear, calm perspective. However, taking all responsibility off the doctor isn't the correct answer to me, nor is dismissing the wife as just an addict who wanted to get high. I think the situation is more complex than just pointing a finger at one person and saying it's their fault.

8:50 "the family hated the medications side-effects (Oxycontin & Hydrocodone), 'anger , volatility and depression'" ...jeez, I know every drug affects people differently but I think it's sake to say this guy's in the minority with these particular ones, in fact he's pretty much the exception to the rule, opiates/ opioids have been proven and quite obviously treat and regulate mood, promote calmness and aid in fighting depression. Good documentary and great that even the rare outcomes are being covered but this also like every other "addiction documentary" makes opiates/ opioids out to be bad and the enemy, whenever it's actually people's glaringly obvious misuse, ignorance and lack of the most basic education on what they are putting into their own bodies that is causing the outcomes rather than the drugs themselves. Dependence and weekly withdrawal symptoms for 15 years were an absolutely expected and most welcome inconvenience for when I chose to use opiates to self-medicate my otherwise incapacitating mental illness 16 years ago, the benefits outweighed any negatives that my particular way and method of using the drugs posed - they literally saved my life, when suicide seemed the only viable, and very rational, option to trying to live with the unbearable, exhausting, unbearable, definite and downright debilitating symptoms of severe depressiom and anxiety. Very few documentaries cover that significant side of opiate/opioid use - channel 4 made an amazingly honest and therein controversial documentary called 'The Truth About Heroin' in the early 2000s, which can be found easily on KZbin and is real worth watching for any eye-opener on these sorts of unpopular truths.

I am a Nephrologist who has a bulging disc. I tried Hydrocodone back in Nov. 2016, but I still a have about a 1/3 of the pills left since then. They are addictive but I don't like nausea & weird feeling. Honestly I just weaned myself off of them. I take Tylenol & Ibuprofen when I hurt. I swim, bike ride, play ball, stay active and this helps my pain tremendously. Endorphins, which are released by exercise are ~50X more potent than morphine. Natural pain killers work so much better than synthetics. America has become soft because at one point we consumed ~80% of the worlds hydrocodone. We don't want to get better, we want a pacifier, a binky! I went to Peru(along the river villages), and these people have NO access to over the counter pain meds. But they survive. They have minimal resources but live happy!! They are no less happier than we are. Stop blaming doctors for this crisis. @@moogybannahilstopaflingon6803 In the past several years because of the so-called opioid crisis (and videos like this) chronic pain patients in this country have been forcibly tapered off their much needed medications leaving them under-medicated and abandoned by doctors terrified of losing their licenses. Opiates were the last resort for hundreds of millions of chronic pain patients and now they are being taken away from them causing them to suffer in pain and left unable to function as before. Many are committing suicide. So, no, I would not say this documentary was very well written. In fact, I call it propaganda by the anti-opioid lobby. The other side of this story was completely left out. Namely, the CDC's faulty overdose statistics, Andrew Kolodny's shameful conflict of interest, PROP, and other lies, such as a complete suppression of the fact that less than one percent of chronic pain patients taking prescription opioids as directed do not become addicted to opiates. I don't know what the cure for drug addiction is but I doubt that leaving such a huge part of our population to face the rest of their lives in pain is going to help it.

I know this from experience as a chronic pain patient -- With sufficient pain to warrant the dose you take, you would not get drowsy, foggy, woozy, "high," addicted, or lethargic from drugs such as Oxycontin, and you would not pass out from taking it. If this is happening from any type of pain pill, either the dose is too high, you are not following the dosing instructions, you are mixing it with other substances such as alcohol, you are intolerant of this type of drug, or you do not have the massive, ongoing amount of pain that Oxycontin and similar drugs are designed to treat. If a loved one has wooziness, lethargy, uncontrollable drowsiness, etc., when taking these drugs, take the pills away and give the patient the drug yourself, at the proper dosing interval. If they still have a problem, tell the doctor the dose is too high, or else see a different doctor. To help a person discontinue taking these drugs, taper the dose down for a few days before stopping the drug, just in case the person has brought on an addiction by taking too much of the drug. I think people with broken bones should not use drugs such as Oxycontin because broken bones will heal and the pain will decrease as time passes, which means you're using a strong pain killer for no reason. My type of pain, from spine problems too numerous to list, will NOT heal nor decrease with time. I've had several broken bones and that pain is trivial, by comparison. In fact, I took OTC drugs such as Ibuprofen for three different broken bone incidents and even after reconstructive knee surgery, but OTC drugs have zero value in reducing my spine pain. Oxycontin is also not the right drug for migraines, because migraines are not continuous like spine pain, and because somebody with a migraine might deliberately take too large a dose in order for the drug to make them be able to sleep. One reason you might accidentally take more OxyContin than prescribed is that these pills do NOT cause any effects that can be felt, at the correct dose, and you may mistakenly think you haven't yet taken the drug, thus taking another one. I always had that worry and was very careful not to double-dose by accident. It's better to skip a dose than to overdose. The woman who says she has trouble breathing when taking pain pills admits that she has taken too much of the drug when that happens. Obviously she is taking more than prescribed and that's why she sounds so lethargic. I can take Oxycontin per instructions and be more alert than I am without it, because pain dulls my mind. But I can no longer get Oxycontin or any effective pain drug because of people like those in the video, who are taking too many pills too close together and sometimes killing themselves, plus the people who take these drugs just for kicks and grins. I frequently curse such people as I sit here in pain that's due to their stupid, irresponsible use of drugs that I need but cannot get, thanks to them.

After a similar scenario... Car accident - chronic pain... I went to my doctor and told him that I felt I was becoming addicted to the oxycodone he prescribed me after he continued to increase the medication amount as my system was becoming tolerant. He asked me "well, are you still in pain?" to which I answered, yes. And he told me NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT. When I had healed and was no longer in pain he would prescribe me suboxone, which would wean me off the pain medication. I went home feeling relieved that there was a solution. How wrong I was. This was back in 2009, and what the doctor failed to tell me was that the suboxone was not covered by my insurance and would cost me upwards of about $500 a month. This was right after the 2008 recession. My husband had been out of work for months, and we were living month to month. I couldn't afford $500 a month for just one medication. Ultimately I was on my own. I ended up hospitalized twice before I finally ended up on methadone management which is a curse in and of itself. I've never recovered.

I strongly believe that medicines must be taken as prescribed. I also believe a full education must occur to make patients aware of the risks and benefits and to understand the proper way to take the medicine. I take pain meds, and I regularly decrease them to lower doses to keep my system sensitized to them. To not do this means that sensitivity will wane and the same dose will become ineffective. I go through a great deal of discomfort at least twice a year when I scale back the number of pills I take. It is terrible. But necessary. While the pain relief will decrease over time if dosages are not periodically reduced, the lethal dose remains the same. This is vital information to convey to patients. Just gradually increasing the dosage is not a viable prescribing pattern. It takes more time to educate a patient, but to not do so is a disservice. Perhaps a fatal one. The common push now it to encourage alternative therapies. Which for some work, many in fact might find themselves able to tolerate reduction in dosage. But as these therapies are not funded for life, persons with chronic pain are often cut off and then unless they are able to conduct their own therapy they are right back where they started with pain medicines.

I'm a nurse, well educated on medications, the effects yet years ago I found myself diagnosed with a rare illness that has no cure and everyday the pain gets worse, years after diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis which in itself is a pain not described. I found myself given pain meds, at first with the plan to take occasionally on the really bad days, the really bad days got to be everyday. Being a mother of 3 small children, a wife i felt it OK as it helped me manage to get up and make a meal. Before long I realized I was physically Dependant on pain medications and I got no good from taking them. I felt horrible pain yet felt no effects from the pain meds as if I were drinking water. Yet if I didn't take the meds the pain became excruciating . I'm now a huge Advocate of cbd oil and legalization of medical marijuana. I really say down and studied the benefits of marijuana, and the risks, only to find the risk is so low if used responsibly . obviously just as with most medication not driving or doing a dangerous task is above all the biggest risk of its use. The good side of it is it helps with pain of all kinds, anxiety and depression, headaches and it's natural. Nobody has ever overdosed on marijuana. Some want to use the excuse it's a gateway drug to bigger drugs but I disagree. It's no different that an adult choosing to drink a beer or wine verses liquors. It's a choice and not to be used as an excuse for personal dislike without educations of benefits on its use. Government gets money from narcotic users, drug companies, doctors, hospitals get kickbacks for prescribing pain medications. My advice is never take pain pills, keep loved ones away from them. It destroys lives, careers. It steals everything from you and those around you and leaves you with a deficit.

I was prescribed OxyContin for shingles (which is extremely painful). I took one pill and immediately felt as if I had taken real drugs. I cut the dose in half and cut the pill in half for my second dose. After that, I stopped taking it. That experience taught me how easily it is for people to become addicted. If you proceed as instructed, you can get hooked. Also, it taught me how doctors over prescribe. I took a total of two pills, but I had a full bottle left to dispose of. Imagine what happens when people take the whole bottle.

For over 20yrs I was on very high doses of Norco 10-150 per month =5 per day. And 45mg morphine -4 times a day. I was never addicted. But you never hear about those who never get addicted. I stop the pain medication myself and went to herb supplements.

people need to take responsibility for their own actions, millions of people take them as prescribed with no problems and to them it is a godsend allowing them to live a life with managed pain, unless you have lived with unmanaged pain days on end you can't relate.
@dawnnicolas76175 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately this is what happens when you have pill mill doctors running pain clinics. Chronic pain sufferers become hard core addicts because the Doctors "prescribe" and overmedicate people. This is very disturbing and heartbreaking. This is what often leads to heroin and fentanyl addictions. When they cannot get their "meds", the patient goes to cheaper and illicit street drugs. 💔

I am a chronic pain patient with multiple disabilities that cause severe pain and cannabis doesn't ever take away all the pain. I take 4 x 5/325 percocet daily to manage my pain and use cannabis for nausea (another constant symptom) and to help ease the pain that the percocet can't cover on bad pain days. Just because lesser forms of pain relief work for some doesn't mean using them exclusively will work in all cases.

I think an awful lot of pain is in the mind. That woman tapping herself, saying "I do love and respect myself".....I think as much as she's dealing with pain from a physical injury or surgery, there's a lot of forgotten pain buried in the back of her mind, that has finally worked its way to the surface.

why didn't the husband at the first of the doc. keep his wife's pills and give them to her as prescribed instead of knowing that once she took them she would take more not knowing? Shouldn't everyone who have these pills have someone to regulate their taking them.
@beth-bi9yv5 жыл бұрын
I'm on the fence. As someone in the healthcare field we legally have no right to question someone's level of pain. You start on low doses of mild pain medication. When someone states that's not effective they increase the dose/frequency. Even if you suspect a person has dependency if they state they are still in pain, you have to take them on their word. We go by the practice of 'pain is subjective, the patient knows they're pain'. And while I definitely think that this way of prescribing /dosing needs to change, at this time it is the legal standard. This documentary majority over simplifies the problem. The blame isn't onesided.....

As a former addict I know that it's not all the doctors fault. In my case it was the people I was around. I have battled with my addiction to painkillers and acohaul for years. I'm a musician and found the drugs in highschool and never kicked the habit until I was homeless for three years. I know that doctors don't help but they are not the only issue. People sell their pills becoming drug dealers. Or give them to us addicts to make us their slaves.

I was on oxy after a back fusion. But not at first. First he gave me Valium and other meds, a caregiver was waking me up to give me a pain pill....I fell when she (walked) me to the bathroom. The doctor took me off the other meds and gave me oxy 30 mg. my head cleared up and I fixed my fax machine. The pain was under control. When it was time to cut them back I said I was afraid of the pain coming back. my doctors told me its as far away as the bottle. This worked for me.

I have been in pain since the age of 14. Smoked marijuana at 17 and found relief until 45 and the cycle began. I'm 65 and still feel guilty that I take meds. I was able to work 36 years due to pain meds. If your loved one is taking too many and left alone, don't leave the medication within their reach. Take it with you. If the Dr actually did something wrong he/she wouldve lost their licence. A patient doesn’t have to take anything even if prescribed and is always able to seek a second opinion. Its a patient’s responsibility to be active in their care, as much as it is a medical professionals responsibility to educate. Some Drs do over prescribe medication, but patients need to take personal responsibility as well.

____________ There are always going to be a few bad apple’s no matter the profession, but I can tell you if a Dr loses his/her licence for malpractice they cant just pack up and practice elsewhere! First of all most countries have different requirements, and you ultimately have to prove you’ve had medical training, and if there are any active malpractice claims, unethical behaviour etc, it stays on their personal record. Medical professionals have licensing, governing body’s for a reason; to protect the public, and they take it very seriously. So no Drs cant cause serious bodily harm, or partake in psychological abuse and continue to practice medicine. Also comparing this to the holocaust, is like comparing apples to alligators, completely ridiculous, and not comparable in the slightest!! Ill say it again, while Drs have a responsibility to always do right, and advocate for their patients’ best interest, patients or their POA have a responsibility as health care consumers to be active in their own care, or the care of their ward in circumstances where they don’t have the capacity to advocate for themselves.
