Not so sleepy, more than a 25% of the total population are students which makes it one of the youngest city in the country (awarded in 2022 to be the best student city of the country, and the second best city where to live in France in 2018... and always appears in the top ten since). It has one of the best university of the country and a solid community nework. Next to Poitiers, at 5 km you've got one of the best attraction park in the world (awarded a dozen of times), "Futuroscope", so... ;)

Auberge Le Cul de Paille - is a great little restaurant hidden away near the Place d'armes (main square) where local office workers take lunch. The walls are autographed by dozens and dozens of famous French writers, singers, celebs etc. If you keep your eyes peeled, there are also pieces of the (once huge) Roman Amphitheatre, including one gate, that used to exist near to the main square. Find Rue Bourcani. The Baptistère Saint-Jean (Baptistery of Saint John) Sophie mentioned is a little walk away from the centre, but well worth the effort. Just a small structure but so important. The oldest surviving Christian building in western Europe! See if you can spot the dragons in the frescos.
