Normally I agree with the whole "artists should listen to their product as a fan of the series and an outsider", but that's not the point of this song. This song was made by a Pokemon anime fan, for Pokemon anime fans. It's for people who grew up with Ash and now have to say goodbye to the old cast we grew up with. It's more a tribute to the franchise than a pure rap showcase.

Just to let you know Scru, there's a bad ass reason why having on the horn 6th is awesome. In the series, it was known to everyone that it was getting a bit stale, however in the arc for the 6th region, the show found its soul again. That's why Mcgwire being not only on here but in the placement he found himself in is fucking crazy. For outsiders Mcgwire being on this joint is like candy for your ears...but for the guys that watched this series its a 3 piece combo to the nostalgia.

Definitely disagree that this kind of rap needs to be accessible to people who aren't into Pokemon. The skill inherent between references to algebra (the X and Y variable line) and references to game mechanics or Pokemon is exactly the same thing, it's just referencing a different kind of detail. It does make it less personally accessible to you though. I also feel like if the entire rap was emotional like the end it would kind of distract from the technicalities of it. With the exception of the Johto section most of the lines have some element of reflection, retrospection, or reference to what people learned or felt about Ash (Mat4yo's verse was more about the feelings of determination, believing in yourself, and never giving up on becoming the best you want to be), so I think there is emotion throughout most of the cypher. It makes sense to me that the most emotionally rich section of it would be the very end as a sendoff. Still, it was cool to see you react to the different parts of this!

This cypher is like a tribute to Ash and his entire journey from the last... 25 years? 30 years? So each rapper touching on specific memorable instances and character relationship dynamics from each respective generations, that's kind of the purpose of this song. Reliving all the memories and closing Ash's chapter of the pokemon book. It's made for those fans of the series, both old and new alike. Anyways, sucks you missed a lot of the bars but dope reaction regardless.

There will be pokemon bars and references you dont expect (or know..please tell me someone got that little bit there lol) and thats the way of the game. Just a counter-thought: is the Star-Spangled Banner a particularly riveting song without the context? Maybe. But the context adds a LOT of weight and emphasis. Same concept for a lot of these nerd-core songs. To me, that doesn’t take away from them. It’s anthemic hip-hop, and the theme is cool nerd stuff.
