Pokémon Colosseum - Let's enjoy some Weird 2000s Vibes

I think it's worth considering the pokemon got more love than the humans because they were designed first. When the team making Colosseum was tasked with more than just another Pokémon stadium, all the 3d guys could set to work while the story team and concept artists worked on everything else. They knew they'd need all of them eventually so it must have been easier to budget time for them.

One little detail I love is the shop in Pyrite that sells heals and pokéballs and such. There are all these cans around that look like generic cartoon soup cans-modeled after Campbell's iconic red and white labels-but then you notice that most of them are palette swapped and realize, wait, that's also the pokéball pattern that these games already use on everything! I don't know if that was intentional or not, but kudos to the art team if it was.

On the topic of Poké balls specifically, are you talking about buyable items, or map decorations? All kinds of purchasable Poké balls in Colosseum can be bought only at Outskirt Stand and nowhere else. It was XD that put Poké balls into more shop inventories.

I'd love for them to revisit the concepts from this duology, most specifically a whole game where all trainer battles are doubles. The Indigo Disk definitely scratched that itch for me, but that was a relatively small area, and endgame DLC at that.

Colosseum! I loved this short-lived Pokemon series. I wish there'd been a third. Are you going to continue playing through it? I hope you do, both this and XD are practically mainline games and I love them lots. At the very least, you should go a little further to get to the Mirror B fight, you get to hear the full length of his wacky theme AND see the iconic dance of his Ludicolos.

While the quality of animation in this game might vary, one thing that does not vary is the quality of the music. That shit slaps from beginning to end and top to bottom.

what a couple of gems these games are. iirc James Turner mentioned that most of the Genius Sonority werent all that familiar with the Pokemon IP prior to working on this, and one can only imagine thats the reason for how tonally and aesthetically different this game is compared to others. I love it dearly though, I hope to see orre again someday.. I love all the rusty crusty locations and the (very light though apt for the target demographic) exploration of class and environmentalism... (also wow i was not expecting how like nostalgic all the music and sound effects would make me feel...)

I quite enjoyed this! Though I understand you've surely gotten enough of the animation of this game for your purposes (and you've certainly got a lot of games to get through), I'd love to see you play more of this and XD Gale of Darkness. The theories you come up with for why certain animations are better than others, thoughts about the organization of the studios and the division of labor, and general critique of the animations are very entertaining to me. Not to mention my nostalgia for these games-- I never got too far in them (they get pretty hard for a kid), but I have lots of fond memories of trying to make progress in both of them. I wish dearly that I hadn't traded in my copies as a kid, they'll surely be astronomically expensive to get nowadays.

Pokémon Colosseum shipping with it's own 59 block (512KiB) memory card because it took up like 50 blocks of memory kinda nuts requirements for the time

Such nostalg. I recall being a kid and sorta... expecting? bad overworld animation. Didn't appreciate the pixel art overworlds either. The people animations are bad in a way that doesn't pull the eye away from the pokemon in battle - mayhap intentionally? (this reading seems silly, given that they take the time to do closeups of trainers mid battle...)

Wait they did make 3d pokemon in the past? Then why does the Switch pokemon games look so bad? This game looks really good, and the animation on each pokemon is great.
