Digimon english dub names are the definition of "change for the sake of change". There are quite a few that were "word, but shortened" in japanese, so they changed it the "full word", like Arkadimon -> Arcadiamon. Other times they go the exact opposite way, like Beelzebumon -> Beelzemon. Some had names in other languages, so they changed to english. Other times the names were already in english and they changed to other languages. Some are just straight up bad translations they decided to double down on. Then there is Leopardmon: Leopard Mode.

They'd show up almost once an episode to make the plot or an action scene happen and then get blasted. Edit: and it's not until I started writing it out that I realized Arukenimon's name is a direct Romanization of "Arachne" from Japanese: "Aru-ke-ni"

I love Mummymon's design because it embodies my favorite aspect of early Digimon designs, which I struggle to put into words/label properly. Basically, he's a mummy, obvs, so he's covered in bandages. The crutch-gun, leg braces, bandolier and bandana seem like "ah yeah digimon just likes adding shit to things that look cool" (and it's true they do that a lot), but they're actually a weird sort of visual design language pun-- Mummies have bandages, but so do people who are *injured*. Thus, they extrapolated that to other shit injured people have, like the crutch and the leg braces. But *why* is he injured? Well, the gun/tactical gear give us the answer, as does his human form in the anime (which wears sort of a cartoony army captain outfit): He's a *wounded soldier*. Basically, a lot of the early Digimon seem really basic but actually have really smart designs that are based on the sort of goofy "that's insane but it makes sense in a way" logic I adore. And then there's Boltmon, who is both covered in bolts and has a lightning bolt shape on his chest.

Boltmon is obviously Frankenstein's Monster. So the bolts are holding all his body pieces together... And he was brought to life utilizing lightning! So that's why most of the bolts on his torso have little LIGHTNING RODS ON THEM! TO CATCH MORE BOLTS! Japan loves visual puns so much it's crazy.

Man, Nico’s vibe this whole video was not healthy for the viewing experience. Everyone else was having fun, but he just did not want to be there. His expression just read contempt the entire time and his answers sounded forced. I don’t know if he needs a break from these, or if he was just having a bad day, but he was just kind of a locus of discomfort for the entire video. Kekekeke Spoopy Scary Digimon send shivers down your spine~ Some more Digimon trivia for ya’ll. Pumpkinmon- as you all discussed, Pumpkinmon’s name is Pumpmon in Japanese. If you aren’t aware Japanese has three styles of writing. Katakana, which uses their sounds to make foreign words, Hiragana, which is their standard japanese phonetics and kanji, which are symbols that represents words and sounds. Pumpmon in JP would sound fine as a reference to Pumpkin, while as you guys joked, Pumpmon would denote a different idea in EN. Now, for some notes on Pumpmon itself. Did you know he is on the same level as Mummymon? He is supposed to look super goofy, but its power level is immense and it can easily fight by summoning giant pumpkins to crush its foes. In the anime, he became beloved due to the fact that despite being a minion for Myotismon, he turned against his master after befriending the youngest member of the cast and died protecting his new friends. An evolution for this guy is actually Boltmon and Noblepumpmon was made later to give him something closer to a “canon” main evolution. Still unlike pokemon, ya’ll gotta be aware that Digimon evolve based on environmental pressure, so they all act more like Eevee than the other Pokemon. A Pumpmon living in harsh wastelands might become Boltmon, while a pampered Pumpmon living in luxury may evolve into Noblepumpmon. Myotismon- you pretty much got much of the name information out of the way. Any localization would never say the word demon, so most references to satanic things were localized out. Myotismon being one of them. Due to connections, his name Vamdemon does make sense when he is often considered an evolution to Devimon. Now, as noted, again there are evolutions to digimon that are retroactively added to their pools with Neo Vamdemon being one of them for the Xros Wars series. If you do remember Myotismon, it would be from the original anime. As mentioned above, he was the big bad of the penultimate arc of the original anime. The anime Myotismon acted like a stereotypical Vampire, but the man also had a pretty extensive bodycount as he was seen drinking human blood and maybe even killing his victims. His Digimon bodycount was also pretty high. In early games, he often was considered one of the most powerful Digimon and in early games, his special move was usually pretty nutty, rivaling upper levels in power. Mummymon- Now this is a fun one. Most fans know him as one of the “Jesse and James” style duo from the anime with Arukenimon. The two usually showed up to overpower the main cast, but through time, the team was able to defeat them over and over… most memorably, their master ended up using them as punching bags to test his new form, killing them both. In the games and cards, he often evolves from Bakemon and Soulmon as well as other spooky Digimon. His specialty involves mummifying their opponents and driving them mad with evil spirits. A more friendlier version did appear in a movie and the newest season of the Anime. One being part of a freedom fighter group and another interested in human medicine. Boltmon- I actually brainfarted when you mentioned that Bolt had a double meaning! Unlike Pumpmon, this actually helped them keep the name the same and prevented then from going Frankenmon or something like that. To hammer in that it is a Frankenstein’s monster reference, his signature attack is fricking Tomahawk Steiner (and yes, they did this in JP cause it just sounded cool.) Now to annoy Nico specifically… Do you know that the most common evolutionary line for Boltmon is fire based? Yeah we get a these tall fire men and a metal iron masked man on fire wielding the chains that bind his body… to Frankenstein with thunder powers and an Axe. Now again, the lines are fluid. If you like Pumpkinmon, that is an option. Prefer robots? Andromon is one too! Its just the most common throughline is candle -> fire man -> fire man with chain -> Boltmon. What I like about his designs is that he can be easily slotted in as a good or bad guy. He could be a sympathetic warrior with noble intentions or a monstrous berserker that kills all in its path. Both of these interpretations have happened in Digimon media and I like that he can be a human partner Digimon and not look too out of place. If Kyle is interested, there is a ton of really good card artwork for this guy! Witchmon- As standard as you can get really. She is also a reference to the virtual pet game Magical Witches. As I referenced last time with Raremon, Bandai Namco owns the Tamagatchi games and made dozens of dozens of spin offs with Digimon actually being one of them. As such there are many digimon who reference these spin offs and Witchmon is one of them. You can tell by her more sleek design that she is a modern digimon, but was created to be a counterpart to Wizardmon, who was shown off in the Beelzemon video. They are rivals and many people like her for the fact that she provides a non beast throughline for some of the more female humanoid Mega level digimon. Noblepumpmon- This digimon was actually created for Digimon ReArise, a gatcha game that recently closed down. He was part of the story and was a gifted digimon for people who joined as the game started. He is pretty much a Nightmare Before Christmas reference to Jack Skellington, known as the Pumpkin King. And yes, he is the evolution to Pumpkinmon. That orange liquid is actually how he attacks. He does the standard thing and summons giant pumpkin bombs, but when he needs to get serious, he summons Pumpkin Soup and water bends it to attack. His most common use is to drown his enemies in it and the most F’d up way he fights is to force feed you the soup til you explode. His power level is not Mega for nothing as the magical soup was able to douse flames from hell summoned by Creepymon (JP name Demon), a Demon Lord Digimon representing Wrath.

Is funny how the entire field of the Nightmare Soldiers are the most consistent in their motif, as the majority are literally on monsters from horror works and Halloween, although some Digimon of the Dark Area are put Nightmare Soldiers too. I still can't keep remembering that Pumpmon is named as Pumpkin in the west, although is because Pumpmon is one of those Digimon I don't care. Like yeah, they are used in some promotional artwork related to Halloween and October, and even had their own Ultimate Level - Noble Pumpmon - but I don't care for them, because the love for this Digimon almost comes from Adventure and I simply don't care of anything from Adventure.

There would honestly be no reason to translate Vamdemon as Vladmon since there aren't that many people that know Dracula is based on Vlad Tepes iii. Mind you Myotis is probably even more obscure, but Vlad honestly has enough vampire associations as it is. As a fun fact: Dracula means son of Dracul, in other words son of the dragon.

I know this is all for fun and by all accounts this was actually way more positive than the other videos, but I can't just help feel a sense of disappointment. Because, WHY does there have to be this sense of 'Digimon do bad make no sense' and overall general dismissiveness? And it's not just Digimon that Pokemon fans do this to. Basically any other game in the Monster Collection genre gets compared to Pokemon, regardless of how similar it actually is, and so often Pokemon fans have just this 'well it's not Pokemon therefor inferior' air to them. Like I wish there was just more embracing of what Digimon is in these vids. Being along for the ride and having fun guessing them, and not this 'WOW THIS MAKE NO SENSE DIGIMON IS SO STUPID' feel, primarily with the earlier vids.

Tbf., a positive regarding Pokémon is the consistent drop of content. The downside is that in recent years the yearly dropped main titles are half-baked games and even a spin-off game like Detective Pikachu Returns is questionable in terms of quality. Now, the "modern" Digimon games we got at the moment are also far away from being top tier monster games, but they run well and are available on multiple platforms. For those who want to dip into Digimon and may have prior experience with Pokémon will be served well with Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth/Hacker's Memory, which are turn based jrpgs. In terms of Anime Digimon obviously has the upper hand and is quite newcomer friendly as aside from the Adventure series all the seasons play in their own universe, so the entry point can be chosen. I have to say though that the Pokémon Anime has become more newcomer friendly now with Ash being retired.

Is this one that has the digital devil no but seriously I enjoy you guys playing games and watching stuff with pokémon fans I always liked that one time antenna television kids got the better animal/monster companion anime until 4Kids stole the FOX Sat Morning block from multiple different entertainment companies granted we got Ultimate Muscle it is one of the few times that I decided to look up the entire series undubbed barely could find subtitled version online back in the day took probably 2 hours to watch an hour of episodes my cousin and I made a thing out of it like looking up stuff on websites I am leaving out because yeah we were messed up kids
